Here's who should be on college football's playoff selection panel (Hicks)

Those who always hated the polls and their place in determining the teams in the BCS national championship game will be happy to know their days are numbered.

With the official movement to a four-team playoff in 2014, the polls no longer will play a part in deciding the matchup.

Now the bad news: A selection committee will make that call. Look on the bright side: At least when you're not happy, you can cuss out the committee or its members and might actually be heard. That wasn't possible with a poll or those wacky, number-crunching computers.

So who should be on the committee? And how many should be on it?

I would select one former coach from each of the 11 conferences and a representative of the independents. Then, I would add five who are not coaches but have a strong association with college football. A 17-person committee would ensure several viewpoints, and the odd number would prevent tie votes.

It's one man's opinion, but consider these candidates: For the five open positions, candidates should have done more than just played the game, but also enjoyed success off the field. For those reasons and others, my choices for those slots would be Archie Manning, Keith Jackson, Grant Teaff, Gene Washington and Roger Staubach.

Manning continues to play a part in the game. Jackson is someone who has a great history in the game and knows its history. Teaff, as a former executive director of the College Football Coaches Association, would be a good fit. Washington, inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in the Class of 2011, is also a successful (yet retired) businessman. Staubach offers positives on several fronts.

So what of the former-coach candidates? Here are some suggestions:

SEC: Vince Dooley. As a long-time coach and former athletics director, the Mobile native would bring a lot to the table.

ACC: Bobby Bowden seems an obvious choice. One of the all-time winningest coaches, the recently retired Bowden knows the game and what it means to play for titles.

Big 12: May get some argument here, but Gene Stallings, who attended and coached at Texas A&M, would be a good pick.

Big East: Dick MacPherson, the former Syracuse coach, has a long career at a high level of success.

Big Ten: There are a few possibilities here, but former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr might be the right pick.

Pac 12: Former USC coach John Robinson seems an obvious selection.

Mountain West: Former Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry would bring a strong voice to the group.

Mid-American: How about Don Nehlen, who coached and played at Bowling Green?

Sun Belt: Former FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger, who spent time at other schools across the country and who won a national title, would be a strong selection.

Western Athletic: Let's go with former Fresno State coach Jim Sweeney.

Conference USA: Let's go with former Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower, who also played at USM.

Independents: Nope, not a former Notre Dame coach. I'd pick former BYU coach LaVell Edwards instead.

It's a good group with strong voices and as good a list to start with as any.

Maroon 5's 'One More Night' Video: Adam Levine Loses Everything

Pop star plays a boxer whose relationship is in ruins because of his profession in the new clip.

In Maroon 5's video for their latest single, "One More Night," frontman Adam Levine plays a boxer dealing with personal turmoil as he prepares for a big fight.

"One More Night" opens with two goldfish swimming around in a bowl before segueing into a sequence where the seemingly idyllic home life Levine enjoys with video girlfriend Minka Kelly and their baby daughter is set against scenes of his hands being wrapped and of him training in a boxing ring.

At home, he eats a protein-heavy meal and revels in his baby girl's laughter as he holds her high in the air. But all is not well, as frequent cuts to Kelly's concerned frown let on.

The writing is on the wall when he has to leave for a big fight. As he steps into the ring to cheers, she packs her bags. He wins the fight, but when he returns home battered from the battle, he finds he's lost everything that really mattered. Kelly and their child are gone and all that's left are the relics of his profession — trophies, a jump rope, a few pictures and a lone goldfish.

Levine hustles in the ring and trains hard for the big show, but it ultimately comes at the expense of everything he holds dear. Taken further, the clip could be looked at as a metaphor for the difficulties Levine faces balancing his professional life as a world-famous singer and TV star and a personal life with the same wants (happy relationship, a family) as everyone else.

Perhaps the video is a lingering response to his recent breakup from model Anne Vyalitsyna, which came less than a month before the band debuted the smash single, "Payphone" featuring Wiz Khalifa. The song continues to enjoy huge success on the charts; it is #3 on this week's Billboard Hot 100, having peaked at #2 a few weeks back.

Maroon 5 and Levine have been riding a professional high for some time (they spent weeks at #1 late last summer with the Grammy-nominated "Moves Like Jagger" and Levine has found major success on "The Voice"), but is it worth it when it comes at the expense of private happiness? That's the question the "One More Night" seems to be asking.

With the pop star left sitting alone on a couch in a sad, empty house at the video's end, Levine's answer to that question is pretty clear.

NATO rescues aid workers held by Afghan militants

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? It was a risky but successful operation: British and other NATO forces stormed a cave tucked in the mountains before dawn Saturday and rescued two foreign female aid workers and their two Afghan colleagues being held hostage by Taliban-linked militants.

Helicopters, flying under the cover of darkness, ferried the rescue team to extreme northeastern Afghanistan where they suspected the hostages were being held. After confirming the workers were there, they raided the site, killed several militants and freed the hostages, ending their nearly two-week ordeal.

Helen Johnston, 28, from Britain, and Moragwa Oirere, 26, from Kenya, and their two Afghan colleagues were kidnapped on May 22 while traveling on horseback in Badakhshan province. The four work for Medair, a humanitarian non-governmental organization based near Lausanne, Switzerland.

"They were kidnapped by an armed terrorist group with ties to the Taliban," said Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings, a spokesman for the U.S.-led military coalition fighting in Afghanistan. "The kidnappers were armed with heavy machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47s. ... The hostages were being held in a cave in the mountains."

Past rescue attempts in Afghanistan have not always gone so well.

In 2009, Sultan Munadi, an Afghan translator kidnapped alongside New York Times reporter Stephen Farrell, was killed in a hail of bullets during a rescue attempt by British commandos. In 2010, the U.S. Navy's SEAL Team 6 tried to rescue Linda Norgrove, a Scottish aid worker, from her Taliban captors in Afghanistan. She was killed by a grenade thrown in haste by one of the American commandos.

Afghan officials said seven militants were killed during Saturday's rescue operation, which was launched around 1 a.m.

British Prime Minister David Cameron approved the rescue operation on Friday afternoon after becoming increasingly concerned about the safety of the hostages. The mission was carried out by British troops in cooperation with other NATO and Afghan forces, Cameron told reporters outside 10 Downing Street in London.

He said it was "extraordinarily difficult" to decide to go ahead with the operation, which involved a "long route march" without being discovered.

"It was an extraordinarily brave, breathtaking even, operation that our troops had to carry out," Cameron said.

British Army Lt. Gen. Adrian Bradshaw, the deputy commander of the NATO military coalition in Afghanistan, said the rugged area had steep mountains, deep gullies and demanding terrain.

"The hostages are in good health ? we've seen all four of them this morning," Bradshaw said, adding they would be reunited with their families soon.

Johnston's family expressed delight over the news that the aid worker and her colleagues had been freed.

"We are deeply grateful to everyone involved in her rescue, to those who worked tirelessly on her behalf, and to family and friends for their love, prayers and support over the last twelve days," the family said in a statement.

Medair spokesman Aurilien Demaurex also expressed relief that the aid workers had been rescued and said the company was "immensely grateful to all parties involved in ensuring their swift and safe return."

Shams ul-Rahman, the deputy governor of Badakhshan province, said the hostages had been held in Gulati, a village in Shahri Buzurg district, near the Tajikistan border.

"Mostly smugglers are based in those areas, but of course the smugglers have the support of the Taliban," Rahman said.

He said Afghan elders in the area had been working to seek the release of the aid workers.

"A group of elders was about to go to the village and start negotiations," Rahman said. "Based on intelligence reports that Afghan forces received, a successful operation was conducted that resulted in the release of the hostages and the killing of the kidnappers."

Separately, a NATO service member died Saturday following an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan. The coalition released no other details about the death. So far this year, 177 foreign troops have been killed in Afghanistan.

Also in the south, Abdul Salaam, the Taliban's military leader for three districts in southern Helmand province, was killed Friday in a joint operation by the Afghan and coalition forces in Kajaki district, the provincial governor's office said Saturday. Abdul Salaam was the brother of Qayum Zakir, a member of Taliban's leadership council known as the Quetta Shura after the Pakistani city of the same name, said Fared Ahmad Farhang, a spokesman for the police in Helmand province.

In the east, NATO and Afghan forces detained a militant commander who allegedly planned and coordinated an attack on a coalition base in eastern Khost province Friday. Several other insurgents were detained during the operation in Sabari district. Militants detonated a truck bomb outside Forward Operating Base Salerno on Friday, then tried to storm the site, but coalition forces repelled the attack, killing 14 militants. No foreign or Afghan troops were killed.
