Like a passing case of the munchies, UFC welterweight contender Nick Diaz's plans to retire seem to have faded, and taking the place of that retirement is a burning desire to face UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.? All this is according to his longtime coach, Cesar Gracie, who posted a lengthy statement on the matter over at GracieFighter.
It was only just February when Diaz purportedly turned his back on the sport, a move prompted by his controversial unanimous decision loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143.??The defeat?came?after a five-round scrap for the UFC Interim Welterweight Championship title, and the bout?saw Condit playing "hit and run" while the Stockton native followed him around and?hurled insults.? Soon after,?it was revealed that?Diaz had tested positive for?marijuana metabolites in a post-fight urinalysis, and the subsequent year-long suspension levied upon him appeared to be the icing on the retirement cake.
Said Gracie:
For the last couple months I've watched Nick begin to frequent the gym more and more.? He's training harder now than he has for many of his fights.? It was obvious that training and fighting is in his DNA.? It is who he is.
This week we had a great talk and he made it clear to me that he is ready to get back in the cage.? Nick Diaz will return.
With interim champ Condit destined to face UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre at UFC 154 in November, who is there for Diaz - an elite,?top-level fighter -?to face that's worthwhile?
As far as future opponents, Nick has stated that he would like to take fights "that matter".? Since GSP will be fighting Condit, he has to look elsewhere.? He will respectfully ask for a fight with Anderson Silva, a fighter he respects and would like to challenge.
Silva's camp has been speaking of a fight with GSP, possibly even at a catchweight.? Nick will take that fight in a minute but has told me that should Silva decide not to drop at all, he will move up to 185lbs to face the Champ.
And there you have it.? Unfortunately, unless Diaz (or, more aptly, his attorneys) can figure out a way around his suspension, ain't nothin' going down 'till February, 2013.? Remember kids, dope is for dopes.? Don't be a dope!
Jim Genia tweets here and wrote this book.? Come at me, bro.

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? The deadly Ebola virus has killed 14 people in western Uganda this month, Ugandan health officials said on Saturday, ending weeks of speculation about the cause of a strange disease that had many people fleeing their homes.
The officials and a World Health Organization representative told a news conference in Kampala Saturday that there is "an outbreak of Ebola" in Uganda.
"Laboratory investigations done at the Uganda Virus Research Institute...have confirmed that the strange disease reported in Kibaale is indeed Ebola hemorrhagic fever," the Ugandan government and WHO said in joint statement.
Kibaale is a district in midwestern Uganda, where people in recent weeks have been troubled by a mysterious illness that seemed to have come from nowhere. Ugandan health officials had been stumped as well, and spent weeks conducting laboratory tests that were at first inconclusive.
On Friday, Joaquim Saweka, the WHO representative in Uganda, told The Associated Press that investigators were "not so sure" it was Ebola, and a Ugandan health official dismissed the possibility of Ebola as merely a rumor. It appears firm evidence of Ebola was clinched overnight.
Health officials told reporters in Kampala that the 14 dead were among 20 reported with the disease. Two of the infected have been isolated for examination by researchers and health officials. A clinical officer and, days later, her 4-month-old baby died from the disease caused by the Ebola virus, officials said.
Officials urged Ugandans to be calm, saying a national emergency taskforce had been set up to stop the disease from spreading far and wide.
There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola, and in Uganda, where in 2000 the disease killed 224 people and left hundreds more traumatized, it resurrects terrible memories. There have been isolated cases since, such as in 2007 when an outbreak of a new strain of Ebola killed at least 37 people in Bundibugyo, a remote district close to the Congolese border, but none as deadly as in 2000.
Ebola, which manifests itself as a hemorrhagic fever, is highly infectious and kills quickly. It was first reported in 1976 in Congo and is named for the river where it was recognized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A CDC factsheet on Ebola says the disease is "characterized by fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, sore throat, and weakness, followed by diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain. A rash, red eyes, hiccups and internal and external bleeding may be seen in some patients."
Scientists don't know the natural reservoir of the virus, but they suspect the first victim in an Ebola outbreak gets infected through contact with an infected animal, such as a monkey.
The virus can be transmitted through direct contact with the blood or secretions of an infected person, or objects that have been contaminated with infected secretions. During communal funerals, for example, when the bereaved come into contact with an Ebola victim, the virus can be contracted, officials said, warning against unnecessary contact with suspected cases of Ebola.
In Kibaale, some villagers had started abandoning their homes in recent weeks to escape what they thought was an illness that had something to do with bad luck, because people were quickly falling ill and dying, and there was no immediate explanation, officials said.
Officials said now that they've verified Ebola in the area they can concentrate on controlling the disease. Ebola patients were being treated at the only major hospital in Kibaale, said Stephen Byaruhanga, the district's health secretary.
"Being a strange disease, we were shocked to learn that it was Ebola," Byaruhanga said. "Our only hope is that in the past when Ebola broke out in other parts of Uganda it was controlled."
The challenge, he said, was retaining the services of all the nurses and doctors who are being asked to risk their lives in order to look after the sick.
"Their lives are at stake," he said.
Officials also worry that other villagers suffering from other diseases might be afraid to visit the hospital for fear of catching Ebola, he said.

Risks for mobile phone users of the Android platform are not new.
Seeing an Android phone give up the owner's secrets with little or no end user compromise is, of course, disconcerting.
While Near Field Communications (NFC) has been popular in Japan for awhile -- converting peoples' mobile phones into their wallets for retail transactions -- the technology has been slow to catch on in the states and Europe.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Nearly seven months into the launch of a new morning show, CBS said Thursday that it will replace co-host Erica Hill with chief White House correspondent Norah O'Donnell.
O'Donnell will team with Charlie Rose and Gayle King on "CBS This Morning," the third-rated morning news show behind ABC's "Good Morning America" and NBC's "Today." She'll begin the new job shortly after the Democratic and Republican national conventions are over.
CBS is taking a more serious news approach than its rivals in the morning. The new show hasn't clicked yet in the ratings, yet CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager and President David Rhodes said they were encouraged by recent positive trends.
"We just felt she was so perfect for the direction we're going in," Fager said.
O'Donnell came to CBS from NBC News in June 2011, one of Fager's first big outside hires. Besides her White House work, she's Bob Schieffer's principal substitute on "Face the Nation."
CBS' move comes a month after the "Today" show made a well-publicized switch by removing Ann Curry as co-anchor and replacing her with Savannah Guthrie. The long-dominant NBC show has plunged in the ratings this year and has been second to "GMA" since Guthrie took over. Both the ABC and NBC shows generally get about double the audience of "CBS This Morning."
O'Donnell will be starting her new job just as "Good Morning America" co-host Robin Roberts takes a medical leave. Roberts said Thursday that she will leave the show in late August or early September to undergo a bone marrow transplant. She has MDS, a blood and bone marrow disease.
Roberts will have some high-powered subs: Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters and Kelly Ripa will be among the people filling in, ABC News President Ben Sherwood said.
Hill and CBS are talking about whether she will have a future role at the network. She was the lone holdover when "CBS This Morning" was launched in January, replacing "The Early Show."
"CBS This Morning" averaged 2.47 million viewers during the first six months of the year, down from the 2.63 million that "The Early Show" was averaging during the same period last year. More recently, CBS noted that the show's viewership last week was up 7 percent over the same week in 2011.
The intense ratings struggle between its rivals this spring hasn't helped CBS in its effort to distinguish itself.
"They are trying to grow their audience at a time when both ABC and NBC are going at it 100 percent," said news consultant Andrew Tyndall of ADT Research. "They're not holding back. It's not like there's low-hanging fruit there."
A relatively slow news period has also handicapped CBS. But ratings are up for Scott Pelley's evening newscast on CBS, which has also gone in a more serious direction, raising questions about whether a breezier approach works best in the morning. It has certainly been successful for ABC.
Having Rose, who's 70, as lead anchor at a time of day when younger women dominate the available audience, could also hurt CBS, Tyndall said.
O'Donnell's hiring does not indicate any doubts about the show's direction, Fager said.
"Just the opposite," he said. "We're really confident about what we're doing. We believe it's the right thing to do for CBS News. It's what our identity is about. It's a high-quality broadcast that not only covers important stories well but also interesting stories, which is one of our trademarks. We love it. We just feel like this is a chance to make it even better."
Thursday's telecast was serious but not eat-your-spinach dry. Early in the show, reports on the Colorado shooting and Mitt Romney's trip to England were featured. Although "CBS This Morning" mentioned the Michael Jackson family problems, it had lengthy reports on a man trying to skydive from miles above the Earth, NASA's colorful new animation for its Mars exploration and an interview with the operator of the website Reddit. The last half hour featured interviews with golfer Phil Mickelson, novelist Gillian Flynn and filmmaker Jay Roach.
Continuing her White House job through the conventions will help with the transition, Rhodes said.
"It probably didn't hurt ? and maybe helped ? for her to stay with it as long as she has," he said.

Tens of thousands of Americans taking potent antiretroviral therapies, or ART, to keep their HIV disease in check may not have as much control over the viral infection as previous estimates have suggested, according to results of a study by AIDS experts at Johns Hopkins and the University of Pennsylvania.
In what is believed to be the largest and longest review of viral load test results in people with HIV disease ever performed in the United States, researchers found that the number of people sustaining viral suppression consistently, at 400 or less viral copies per milliliter of blood, year after year is roughly 10 percent less than previous estimates. The team's findings are set to appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association online July 25. The publication is timed to coincide with the XIX International AIDS Conference in Washington, D.C.
According to senior study investigator and infectious disease specialist Kelly Gebo, M.D., M.P.H., the team's latest findings underscore just how difficult it is to successfully treat HIV disease and prevent its spread even when people are taking effective ART. Gebo says that "if we are not fully suppressing the virus as much as we thought, then we are not fully preventing and reducing the likelihood of HIV transmission, either." Some 426,000 of the estimated 1.2 million Americans infected with the virus that causes AIDS are taking ART and are under the routine care of a physician.
Gebo says that, overall, while ART has improved significantly within the last decade, with once-a-day pill regimens replacing more complicated, multidrug schedules, "our study findings suggest that physicians and other health care providers still need to do more to promote drug adherence among our patients, and make sure people take their antiretroviral therapies as prescribed."
Without that extra effort, she says, "More people are potentially at risk of becoming infected with HIV, and those already on ART are at risk of developing drug resistance, too." Gebo is an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the University's Bloomberg School of Public Health.
As part of the decade-long study, more than 100,000 individual blood test results were reviewed, all obtained with permission from the medical records of 32,483 infected adults. Seventy percent were men. Everyone prescribed ART had their blood viral levels carefully monitored at more than a dozen established HIV clinics, including the Moore Clinic at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Among the study's specific findings was that the percentage of participants who tightly controlled their HIV disease was 72 percent in 2010, the last year for which viral load counts were analyzed. This represented a major increase from 45 percent in 2001, but was significantly less than the 77 percent to 87 percent figures widely cited in 2011 reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and in studies by other leading Hopkins and Canadian researchers.
According to study lead investigator Baligh Yehia, M.D., M.S.H.P., M.P.P., a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia who trained as a medical resident at Johns Hopkins, all previous reports were based on single-year or one-time-only recordings of blood viral levels, rather than a review of every patient's individual test results from year to year. The latter, he says, is a "more accurate" depiction of people's response to ART over the long term.
Other key findings in the latest report were that younger people, ages 18 to 29; blacks; injection drug users; and those without private health insurance were almost twice as likely as older people; whites; men who have sex with men; and those with private insurance to not have fully suppressed blood viral levels.
"Our data shows that while tremendous strides have been made in sustaining viral suppression, physicians and other HIV care providers need to be more vigilant in monitoring the viral loads in young people, African-Americans, injection drug users and those who lack health insurance," says Yehia.
Gebo and Yehia next plan to use their study data to develop programs for helping people with HIV adhere to therapy and keep routine appointments with their physicians. The team also has plans to interview infected people who consistently adhered to ART and medical care, and those who did not, to better understand the reasons behind successful and failed attempts to sustain and tightly control the disease.
Currently, there are more than 34 million people in the world living with HIV, including an estimated 1,178,000 in the United States and 23,000 in the state of Maryland.

In a brand new interview, George Zimmerman apologized to Trayvon Martin's parents. But as for that night, Zimmerman said he wouldn't do anything differently. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell gets reaction from The Washington Post's Jonathan Capehart and The Grio's Joy Reid.

George Zimmerman shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, above, on Feb. 26. He has been charged with second-degree murder.
By Isolde Raftery and Kari Huus, NBC News
In his first television interview, George Zimmerman walked through his version of what happened the night he killed Trayvon Martin. He said he does not regret being armed, nor does he regret his actions.
Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Martin, an unarmed black teenager, on Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla. The case has become the focus of national media, and ignited an emotional debate over race and gun rights.
The 28-year-old son of a white father and Peruvian mother of Hispanic descent, Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. He says he shot Martin in self-defense after Martin attacked him. He is?currently out on bail.
"When I was in jail obviously, in solitary confinement, I had a lot of time to think and reflect," he said. "I just think it?s a tragic situation. I hope it?s the most difficult thing I?ll ever go through in my life."
Zimmerman explained in an exclusive interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity that he was headed to Target that Sunday night for his weekly grocery shopping.
"That's the last time I've been home," he said.
Zimmerman said that he was motivated to become involved in the safety of his community after a robbery in his community. Burglars broke into the home of a young woman with a 9-month-old baby -- the woman then barricaded herself in an upstairs bedroom, Zimmerman said. His wife saw the robbers run through their backyard.
"Even though my wife wasn't certain what happened, that was enough to scare her and shake her up," he said. "I promised her I would do what I could to keep her safe."
On Feb. 26, Zimmerman said that he saw a young man ? later identified as Martin -- acting suspiciously when he first saw him. It was raining, and Martin, he said, was cutting between houses.
?He was walking very leisurely for the weather,? Zimmerman said. ?It didn?t look like he was a resident.?
Nor, he said, did Martin look like ?a fitness fanatic that would train in the rain.??
In fact, Martin was visiting his father at his father?s girlfriend home. He was returning from the corner store, where he had purchased Skittles and a can of AriZona watermelon drink.
At the time, Zimmerman told the police dispatcher by phone that Martin was running away from him. But in Wednesday night?s interview, he said that Zimmerman was ?skipping, going away quickly. He wasn?t running out of fear.?
Zimmerman said that Martin then appeared out of the blue and delivered a single punch to his nose, breaking it. Zimmerman said Martin asked him what his problem was.
Zimmerman said he replied, ?No, I don?t have a problem.?
?I don?t remember if I went immediately to the ground, or if he pushed me,? Zimmerman continued.
?He was straddled on me with his full weight and I would try and sit up and push myself down, and whenever I would sit up that?s when he would take the opportunity to slam my head back down and punch me in the head and continue to hit my nose,? Zimmerman said.
He said Martin was cursing at him, telling him to shut up and that he was going to kill him.
Zimmerman said he eventually shimmied to reach his gun. Martin, he said, spotted the gun.
?At that point, I realized that it wasn?t my gun, it wasn?t his gun. It was the gun,? Zimmerman said. ?He said, ?You?re gonna die tonight, mother-f------.?
He said he felt Martin?s hand go down his chest, toward his holster.
?It just happened so quickly,? Zimmerman said. But, he said, ?I didn?t think I hit him.?
When Hannity asked if Zimmerman had any regrets, he replied, ?No, sir.?
"Do you regret that you had a gun that night?" Hannity asked.
"No sir," Zimmerman replied.
?I feel it was all God?s plan,? he said.
In response to the interview, Trayvon Martin's family issued a statement through their attorney.
"George Zimmerman said that he does not regret getting out of his vehicle, he does not regret following Trayvon, in fact he does not regret anything he did that night. He wouldn't do anything different and he concluded it was God's plan," the statement said.
"We must worship a different God because there is no way that MY God would have wanted George Zimmerman ?to KILL my teenage son," Tracy Martin added.
Hannity asked Zimmerman about the first time the two spoke by phone. Zimmerman at the time was armed and alone in a hotel room, Hannity said, and didn?t have an attorney.
?Where were you mentally then? When I was talking to you, I was concerned,? Hannity said.?
?So was I,? Zimmerman said.? ?I was talking daily to one state police officer that had legitimate concerns for my safety. My wife, I asked her to stay in Florida. I was out of state.?
?I?m not a racist and I?m not a murderer,? Zimmerman said.
He also again apologized to Trayvon Martin?s parents.
?I would tell them that again, I?m sorry," Zimmerman said. "I don?t have -- my wife and I don?t have any children. I have nephews that I love more than life. I love them more than myself. And I know when they were born, it was a different, unique bond and love that I have with them. And I love my children even though they aren?t born yet. And I am sorry that they buried their child. I can?t imagine what it must feel like. And I pray for them daily.?
Phyllis Kotey, a legal expert who has followed the case, said there were several possible strategic reasons for O'Mara to allow his client to appear on national television.
"Clearly they are trying to humanize (Zimmerman) some more and give his story some traction," said Kotey, a former judge and prosecutor who now teaches at Florida International University College of Law.
She noted that?in a television appearance, Zimmerman can speak without the risk of cross-examination by the prosecution.
"Every time he does something public like this, he has an opportunity to get information to the potential jurors without having to take the stand," Kotey said.
The interview was taped on Wednesday morning and broadcast later Wednesday evening. Fox News said no payment was made for the interview.?
