The dedication and leadership of the Union County Family Support Council are critical to tackling this issue on a state, community and individual level.?
Union County Family Support Council started in 1984 as a small group of individuals who wanted to make a difference in the lives of children. Twenty-eight years later the council is still striving for the same goal. Even though faces have changed, their overall goal of protecting children will never change. Attendees meet monthly on the fourth Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Union County Extension. According to the statistics reported by Prevent Child Abuse Iowa, in 2010, Union County ranks fourth in the state for child abuse.
?The ICAPP grant will allow Union County Family Support Council to sustain the Parents as Teachers Program and to start education with sexual abuse prevention,? said Victoria Brammer, Community Partnerships for Protecting Children program manager and president of the Union County Family Support Council. ?This opportunity will have huge benefits for families and the future prosperity of our community as we strive to create a safe, nurturing environment for all children to develop to their full potential.?
ICAPP funding comes from federal and state appropriations and birth certificate fees. Iowans also can support ICAPP and this type of service by donating a portion of their state income tax return through the Check Off Child Abuse campaign.
All funds raised from the campaign directly support child abuse prevention programs in local communities. For more information about ICAPP, visit www.pcaiowa.org/programs/icapp.
