Wansink and his co-author, Koert van Ittersum of the Georgia Institute of Technology, found that softening the lighting and music in fast-food restaurants didn't change what people ordered, but it caused them to eat 18 percent less of what they ordered -- 775 calories instead of 949. They also rated the food as more enjoyable. The results are posted online in the journal Psychological Reports.
The Wansink-Ittersum study counters the popular notion that people who dine in a relaxed environment, with soft lighting and mellow music, will order more food and eat more than those in a more typical dining environment.
"These results suggest that a more relaxed environment increases satisfaction and decreases consumption," Wansink said. "This is important information for fast-food restaurants, which are often accused of contributing to obesity: Making simple changes away from brighter lights and sound-reflecting surfaces can go a long way toward reducing overeating -- and increase their customers' satisfaction at the same time."

After reading on their website that Artu serves gluten-free pasta, I begged Husband for weeks to try it, despite the somewhat high prices ($15-30 for an entr?e). Finally, one evening after trying and failing to get into several other restaurants on a Friday night, we walked past Artu?s Charles Street location (there is a North End location too) and noticed an empty table.?
We walked down the small, narrow stairs into a small, pleasant, simple dining room. We were seated almost immediately. The wooden tables and chairs are fairly close together. There is a large wood-burning fireplace that does make the flow of the room a bit more cramped and awkward, but adds charm and d?cor to an otherwise utilitarian space, so it balances out. Overall, the space is clean and inviting and has a great view of the kitchen. I like that the kitchen is open can be seen from the dining area: watching chefs is always fascinating.
After ordering our drinks, I asked our waitress about gluten-free options. The waitress was knowledgeable about gluten-free options. She said many of the meat dishes could be made gluten-free.
She said that I could have gluten-free pasta, whatever shape they had in the back, either a penne or rigatoni (no ravioli or tortellini) with any entr?e / sauce for an additional fee of six dollars. That is right, six dollars! I am frequently charged a nominal fee for gluten-free products. They are more expensive and have to be cooked separately; so the normal one or two dollar surcharge seems reasonable.
I was so shocked at the steep surcharge that I actually tried to justify it, but found I could not.? So I asked if the pasta was fresh (I would have been ok with the charge if the pasta was fresh) and the waitress said no, it was just inconvenient for them to keep gluten-free pasta so they charge more for it.? At Trader Joe?s a pound of gluten-free pasta is $1.99 and even Whole Foods charges less than $6.00 a pound for its gluten-free pastas.? It doesn?t seem fair to charge so much for a small serving of pasta when the market value just doesn?t bear it out.
I was even more miffed about the surcharge when I realized that Artu?s online menu states that gluten-free pasta is available, but not the amount of the surcharge. Stonehearth Pizza discloses the amount of the surcharge on both their online and restaurant menus and even more places like Charley?s or Not Your Average Joe?s do not even charge more for gluten-free options.
We started off by ordering a sausage appetizer. The sausages were excellent: well-seasoned and perfectly cooked. The anise was not overwhelming, nor were they too salty. They sausages were topped with a simple tomato sauce, which was also very good.
After being so irritated by the pasta surcharge, I ended up ordering a simple roast chicken served with oven-roasted vegetables. I tried to order some mashed potatoes, offered on the menu, but was told that the chef no longer serves potatoes and I could order some gluten-free pasta instead if I liked. I went without a side.
The chicken was dry and pretty flavorless. The skin was pale and fatty. Obviously the oven had not been hot enough and the skin not seasoned or prepped with oil or butter well enough to render the skin and create that amazing, almost crackly crust that a really amazing roast chicken has. The vegetables were just ok, they were seasoned with dried herbs and were not amazing. Overall the dish was mediocre at best.
Husband ordered a lobster ravioli, which he LOVED. He ate the whole dish with a big grin on his face. He said the sauce was unbelievable and tasted rich, creamy and lobster-y.
After the entr?e, we decided to go for a dessert. I ordered a Limoncello gelato and Husband ordered a bombe: peach and strawberry gelato coated with white chocolate. Both desserts were excellent. The Limoncello gelato was especially good. It was rich, tart and satisfying.
Overall the service was okay, the waitress was pleasant, but a little perfunctory and seemed a bit distracted with take out orders from time to time.
Husband and I definitely disagreed about whether Artu is worth the price tag. Husband thought it was top notch. I might go back and give it another try, but for now my verdict is mediocre and over-priced.? I would much rather stop by the Beacon Hill Bistro!
I would give Artu three stars for both its mediocre food and gluten-free friendliness.

The family and their slaves will be living in the house for two days to give visitors an impression of what Roman life would have been like away from the more commonly featured military.

?When we opened the Roman Town House, for the first time it gave visitors a real sense of just how grand and how big the city would have been ? the ruins highlight some areas like the bath-house, but it is only when you see the height and colour that you get a real feeling for what Wroxeter might have looked like,? says site manager, Mary Wycherley. ?Having a real Roman family living in the house will enable visitors to question different aspects of life in the city, from dealing with the unpredictable British weather to how they would welcome guests into their home.?
One of the rooms at the front of the Roman Town House is set up as a shop, from which the merchant would have sold his goods. During the ?Meet the Romans? weekend, the retail facility will be occupied by a cobbler making shoes for the citizens and an armourer making ringmail, a precursor of the mail vests more commonly seen in medieval re-enactments.
The event runs each day from 11.00am to 5.00pm, with the site itself opening an hour earlier at 10.00am.

But Wenger said: "What happened to us a year ago was very different to the situation we find ourselves in now and we are far better prepared this time.

GuardedID is a $30 app from StrikeforceTechnologies that encrypts everything the user types before sending the data to the Web browser. The goal is to prevent malicious keyloggers that may be on the user's computer from intercepting sensitive information such as login credentials, financial information such as credit card numbers, and other sensitive data.
Many malware attacks rely on keyloggers to intercept keystrokes, which are then transmitted to a remote server. Attackers can use the harvested data to launch further attacks, such as identity theft or financial fraud. Keyloggers are stealthy, and most users aren't even aware their computers are infected. Some of these malicious programs can bypass the antivirus, so having security software installed doesn't automatically translate to being protected. Strikeforce just assumes that the computers are already infected, and proactively protects users with GuardedID.
There have been many instances recently where one employee at a company was infected with a keylogger, giving attackers access to the company's bank accounts and other sensitive information. IT departments can get bulk licenses to protect all the machines, or at the very least, the ones used to access sensitive data.
An annual software license for GuardedID covers two computers and is available for $29.99. Users can download the software and try it for free for 30 days. I tested GuardedID version 3 premium build 3.1.1049, and not the free trial.
Getting Started As soon as the installation process completed, the installer program launched a page in the Web browser with the GuardedID toolbar visible in the top left corner. In case the toolbar was not visible, the user could enable it by clicking on the link, "Make toolbar appear." The page has other links to activate the software (entering the license key) and access help files.
GuardedID protects most Windows applications, including Web browsers, Microsoft Office applications, tax and accounting programs, financial sites, and IM and chat programs. I tested various Websites in the browser, two chat programs, and Microsoft Excel as part of the review.
GuardedID protects itself from attackers. It hooks into the operating system's Event Viewer and logs messages if the GuardedID keyboard driver is ever modified (such as by malicious keyloggers and spyware). If something is changed, the software displays an "Unknown Driver Warning" to alert the user of the problem.
Browser-Specific Installation GuardedID protects Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox but not Google Chrome. When running the installer, it detects which browsers are on the machine and installs the protection software for one or both browsers. I first ran the installation on a machine with Internet Explorer only to install only the IE version of the toolbar. I verified this by installing Firefox afterwards. I re-ran the installation program in order to get the toolbar in both IE and Firefox. I just wish a Chrome version had been available.
Going Through the Paces GuardedID monitors every page that is loaded in the browser and looks for input fields and other text areas. If it finds one, the GuardedID icon on the toolbar turns green, the active input field (the cursor appears in the field) is highlighted green. The highlight is a great visual cue that whatever is typed within that field is being encrypted (128-bit) and protected from malicious snoops. ?
GuardedID is "on" only for the active text field, so the remaining text fields on the page aren't highlighted. When the user moves to a new field, that field is then highlighted. When I clicked on other parts of the site or started typing in the URL bar, the GuardedID icon on the toolbar switched "off" to red and none of the fields were highlighted.
It took a while to get used to the constant switching on and off while I navigated around the page, but it is not a distraction and actually works pretty well.
For most of the sites I tested, which included several banking sites, search engines, social networking sites, and e-commerce sites, GuardedID turned on immediately as the page loaded, with the a field (search, username, first name, etc) on the page highlighted in green. On a few of the sites, there was a bit of a lag between when the page loaded and when the protection kicked in. There were two sites, a bank's website for credit card holders, and a Web-based chat window, that didn't trigger the protection automatically. I suspect it has to do with how the page was coded than issues with the software. As soon as I clicked on the field to type, GuardedID turned on, so the fact that it didn't auto-detect wasn't a problem. The sites had no trouble with sites built in Java, which was an improvement from earlier versions.
The tool also has an "anti-clickjack" option, which detects whether the website has any hidden frame elements that could trick users into clicking on malicious links. If the software finds frame elements, it draws a red box around them. There are two techniques commonly used in clickjacking: "Opacity" refers to when an invisible malicious page is overlayed over another site. "Positional" refers to when the malicious link is hidden because it is surrounded with legitimate content. GuardedID detects both.
Testing With the Keylogger I downloaded a commercial keylogger (Beyond Kelogger from Supremtec) and four non-commercial (shall we say, "not legitimate") keyloggers onto the test machine to see what GuardedID was doing. The test was simple: type on the computer in one of the applications? Web browser, IM chat, or Excel?and look at what was captured with the keylogger.
After verifying that the keystrokes were being captured, I opened up the Web browser to see GuardedID in action. I went to Google, Amazon, and Google Docs. On each site, I verified that GuardedID auto-enabled the protection. When I started typing in the input field, the keylogger's log screen displayed a series of numbers. There didn't appear to be a pattern such as a number assigned to a specific letter.
It is worth mentioning that many keyloggers are capable of logging other things, such as taking screenshots, storing clipboard contents, saving IM conversations, and poking through the browser history. GuardedID is specifically focused on just keystrokes, nothing else.
Protect Yourself GuardedID encrypts everything the user types on the machine in order to protect the data. The browser toolbar makes it easy to protect email and website communications. Since GuardedID also works offline, users are protected even if they don't know whether the computer is infected. The lack of Chrome and Mac OS X support is disappointing, but the simple tool is lightweight and does not distract users from getting work done. For a business, this tool is useful for ensuring all data is safe from snoops that have gotten between the keyboard and the screen.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? The same type of microwave oven technology that most people use to heat up leftover food has found an important application in the solar energy industry, providing a new way to make thin-film photovoltaic products with less energy, expense and environmental concerns.
Engineers at Oregon State University have for the first time developed a way to use microwave heating in the synthesis of copper zinc tin sulfide, a promising solar cell compound that is less costly and toxic than some solar energy alternatives.
The findings were published in Physica Status Solidi A, a professional journal.
"All of the elements used in this new compound are benign and inexpensive, and should have good solar cell performance," said Greg Herman, an associate professor in the School of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering at OSU.
"Several companies are already moving in this direction as prices continue to rise for some alternative compounds that contain more expensive elements like indium," he said. "With some improvements in its solar efficiency this new compound should become very commercially attractive."
These thin-film photovoltaic technologies offer a low cost, high volume approach to manufacturing solar cells. A new approach is to create them as an ink composed of nanoparticles, which could be rolled or sprayed -- by approaches such as old-fashioned inkjet printing -- to create solar cells.
To further streamline that process, researchers have now succeeded in using microwave heating, instead of conventional heating, to reduce reaction times to minutes or seconds, and allow for great control over the production process. This "one-pot" synthesis is fast, cheap and uses less energy, researchers say, and has been utilized to successfully create nanoparticle inks that were used to fabricate a photovoltaic device.
"This approach should save money, work well and be easier to scale up at commercial levels, compared to traditional synthetic methods," Herman said. "Microwave technology offers more precise control over heat and energy to achieve the desired reactions."

When water containing the Naegleria fowleri ameba, a single-celled organism, enters the nose, the organisms may migrate to the brain, causing primary amebic meningoencephalitis, a very rare -- but usually fatal -- disease. A new study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases describes the first reported cases in the United States implicating nasal irrigation using tap water in these infections.
Now available online, the study highlights the changing epidemiology of this uncommon disease, as well as the importance of using appropriately treated water for nasal irrigation.
From 2002 to 2011, 32 N. fowleri infections were reported in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In this latest study, Jonathan Yoder, MPH, coordinator of waterborne diseases and outbreak surveillance at CDC, reports the work of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals and CDC in investigating two cases in 2011 in Louisiana. Two unrelated patients, a 28-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman, each died within five days of being admitted to the hospital with meningitis-like symptoms. Both had used a neti pot for regular sinus irrigation. Because family members of both patients were certain the patients had no recent history of recreational freshwater contact, which is typically associated with the disease, sinus irrigation using disinfected (chloraminated) tap water was implicated.
"N. fowleri was found in water samples from both homes," Yoder said, but "not found in the treatment plants or distribution systems of the municipal water systems servicing the patients' homes." Although it was never clear how N. fowleri were introduced into the plumbing of the patients' houses, once there, the organisms were able to colonize the hot water systems.
In addition, Yoder's team also tested commercially available reconstituted salt packets for use with neti pots and found that these were unable to reduce the number of N. fowleri organisms within a four-hour timeframe -- far outside the real world conditions of less than a minute that most people spend -- showing that simply adding salt mixtures to tap water does not inactivate the organisms fast enough. As a result, Yoder advises that the simplest methods to avoid infection is to purchase water that is labeled as distilled or sterile, or use only water that was previously boiled for 1 minute (at elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for 3 minutes) that has been left to cool, or use water that has gone through a filter with a pore size of 1 micron or smaller.
Many infections from N. fowleri occur in warm freshwater locations following localized heat waves. Whether projected climate change could lead to an expansion of the ameba's geographic range is unknown, the authors noted. They recommend that systematic environmental sampling be carried out to document changes in the ecology of N. fowleri so that measures to prevent its spread can be improved. It is also important to raise the level of awareness about the disease among physicians treating patients with meningitis-like symptoms, the authors wrote.
Deaths from N. fowleri infection, which remain very rare, "are tragic for the families of those infected," Yoder said. "The CDC is working to understand this organism so that we can improve prevention recommendations, identify N. fowleri infections, and improve clinical treatment."

Primary amebic meningoencephalitis is a very rare but usually fatal disease caused when water containing Naegleria fowleri amebae enters the nose, allowing the single-celled organisms to migrate to the brain.
In 2011, two fatal cases of the disease reported from Louisiana occurred in persons following nasal irrigation. This is the first time that contaminated tap water coming from a disinfected municipal water system has been linked to N. fowleri infections in the United States.
For prevention, health officials advise using only previously boiled, filtered, distilled, or sterilized water when making solutions for irrigating, flushing, or rinsing the sinuses.

Discovery may inform new strategies for curbing worldwide obesity epidemic
Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have identified a common compound in the modern diet that could play a major role in the development of abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. The findings are published in the August 20, 2012 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The research team, led by Helen Vlassara, MD, Professor and Director of the Division of Experimental Diabetes and Aging, found that mice with sustained exposure to the compound, methyl-glyoxal (MG), developed significant abdominal weight gain, early insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. MG is a type of advanced glycation endproduct (AGEs), which is produced when food is cooked with dry heat. AGEs have been found to lower the body's protective mechanisms that control inflammation.
In the study, one group of mice was fed a diet high in MG over four generations, while the control group was fed a diet without MG. Both diets had normal calories and fat. Over four generations, the mice that ate the MG started to develop early insulin resistance and increased body fat, whereas the control group did not have either of these conditions. The researchers found that MG caused a marked deficiency in protective mechanisms, such as the survival factor SIRT1 that is present in fat and controls inflammation, while enhancing the metabolism of glucose and insulin. The ingestion of MG also adversely affected the activity of an important anti-AGE receptor called AGER1, which protects SIRT1 and fights insulin resistance.
"This was a prolonged but rewarding study showing that a specific AGE compound abundant in foods, within only a few generations in mouse terms, contributes to the increase in weight gain, insulin resistance, and, diabetes, reproducing the pattern seen increasingly in humans over the last decades ," said Dr. Vlassara. "These key findings should inform how we understand and prevent the human epidemic of obesity and diabetes."
The abdominal fat of the MG-fed mice was transformed into a repository of fat cells producing highly inflammatory molecules called cytokines, which impaired glucose metabolism and slowed down fat turnover, and resulted in insulin resistance and diabetes. Mice that were fed the low-in-MG diet displayed high levels of SIRT1, AGER1 and no diabetes.
"The study demonstrates how the prolonged ingestion of seemingly innocuous substances common in human food, such as MG, can reduce defenses and compromise native resistance to metabolic and other diseases," said Dr. Vlassara. "The mouse findings are also quite exciting because they provide us with new tools, not only to study, but to begin taking measures to prevent diabetes, either by suppressing their formation or by blocking their absorption with our food."
Recent clinical research by Dr. Vlassara's team demonstrated that a modest cut in foods high in AGEs improved insulin resistance in adults with type 2 diabetes, without reducing fat or carbohydrate consumption. In other promising studies, the team has used an oral agent that binds AGEs in the intestine, blocking their absorption.
"For more than 30 years we have been studying the potential of eliminating harmful AGEs from the body, and now from food, as one way to curb the diabetes epidemic," said Dr. Vlassara. "Thus far, our findings reflect the need for a dramatic departure from standard clinical recommendations, which should now include a reduction in the amount of dry heat and processed foods in the diet."
The research team recommends that clinical guidelines be revised to eliminate foods cooked using dry heat and replace them with methods that use lower heat or lots of moisture (water) as in stewing, poaching or steaming. Examples from the AGE-less diet include stewed beef, chicken and fish instead of grilled meats. Dr. Vlassara and her colleagues' new guidelines for an AGE-less diet can be found www.theage-lessway.com.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity flexed its robotic arm today for the first time since before launch in November 2011.
The 7-foot-long (2.1-meter-long) arm maneuvers a turret of tools including a camera, a drill, a spectrometer, a scoop and mechanisms for sieving and portioning samples of powdered rock and soil.
"We have had to sit tight for the first two weeks since landing, while other parts of the rover were checked out, so to see the arm extended in these images is a huge moment for us," said Matt Robinson of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, lead engineer for Curiosity's robotic arm testing and operations. "The arm is how we are going to get samples into the laboratory instruments and how we place other instruments onto surface targets."
Weeks of testing and calibrating arm movements are ahead before the arm delivers a first sample of Martian soil to instruments inside the rover. Monday's maneuver checked motors and joints by unstowing the arm for the first time, extending it forward using all five joints, then stowing it again in preparation for the rover's first drive.
"It worked just as we planned," said JPL's Louise Jandura, sample system chief engineer for Curiosity. "From telemetry and from the images received this morning, we can confirm that the arm went to the positions we commanded it to go to."

The turret has a mass of about 66 pounds (30 kilograms). Its diameter, including the tools mounted on it, is nearly 2 feet (60 centimeters).
"We'll start using our sampling system in the weeks ahead, and we're getting ready to try our first drive later this week," said Mars Science Laboratory Deputy Project Manager Richard Cook of JPL.
Curiosity landed on Mars two weeks ago to begin a two-year mission using 10 instruments to assess whether a carefully chosen study area inside Gale Crater has ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.
JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, manages the Mars Science Laboratory Project, including Curiosity, for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. JPL designed and built the rover. The Space Division of MDA Information Systems Inc. built the robotic arm in Pasadena.

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) ? An official in northeast Congo says at least 60 people are dead following a landslide at a gold mine in a remote area.
Local administrator Faustin Drakana Kananga told The Associated Press on Thursday that it took crews four days to get to the mine following Monday's accident in Pangoyi. The area is controlled by members of a militia and located in a dense jungle.
Kananga said the miners were in an area about 100 meters (yards) below the surface at the time of the accident.
Congo, a vast nation in central Africa, is mired in poverty despite enormous mineral riches following decades of dictatorship and war. Many Congolese try to eke out a living through small-scale mining though the practice remains dangerous and unregulated.

Senior citizens are used to getting good deals. Tell the truth: if you're aren't of AARP age, there have been times you wish you were -- when buying mass transit tickets, for example, or visiting America's national parks (one $10 fee gets you into any park, all year).? Plenty of restaurants and other retailers offer "senior days" and other deals.
But take checking accounts off the senior discount list. A new report by the Pew Center on the States warns(.pdf) that so-called senior checking accounts may not be a good deal at all. In fact, in some cases, senior accounts cost much more than a basic checking account.
At Bank of America, for instance, a senior account is far more expensive than a basic account. Here are the facts, from Bank of America's website.? The bank's ?Advantage for Seniors? account costs $25 per month vs. a basic checking account fee of $14 per month. In both cases, consumers can earn a fee waiver, but here again, the senior account comes up short. Direct deposit of paychecks is one way, but that's often not available to seniors, Pew points out in its report.?Basic checking users can also avoid fees by maintaining a $1,500 balance in their account; but seniors have to keep at least $5,000 in their account. Fall below $5,000 for even one day, and that's a $25 fee.

"If you have $5,000, and are happy to have it sit in this account, this can be a fine deal," said Susan Weinstock, director of Pew's Safe Checking Project. "But the question is: Is the consumer in an account that best suits their needs? The point of this (research) is that consumers need to understand the terms of their accounts."
Seniors who could comfortably park $2,000 or $3,000 -- but not more ? in their checking accounts would save $300 apiece annually by steering clear of the senior account at Bank of America.?And those?with?balances below $1,500 would still save $132 by picking a standard, basic account instead of the senior account.
The Advantage for Seniors account does offer a few perks, such as fee-free mini-statements from ATMs (they normally cost $1), but Pew concludes in its report that such perks aren?t worth the extra fees.
"Essentially, accounts of this type are a luxury account tailored for seniors, not necessarily an improvement on the basic checking package," Pew concluded.
Bank of America spokeswoman Betty Riess said that seniors have a variety of low-cost choices at ?Bank of America, including its MyAccess product, which provides a fee waiver with any monthly direct deposit of $250 or more, including Social Security payments.
?The Advantage interest-bearing account is designed for customers who have higher balances with us, and the vast majority of seniors in that account do not pay a monthly maintenance fee on the account,? she said.? She added that the Advantage account offers one benefit that is quite handy for seniors ? an early CD withdrawal without a penalty.
Senior accounts at other banks also offer some tricky choices, but not quite as tricky. At TD Bank, the "60 Plus" account costs $10 monthly(.pdf), more than the $3.99 basic checking account costs, the report found. But it only takes a $250 balance to earn a fee waiver in the TD senior account, a much more manageable threshold.
At BB&T, senior accounts cost $8 per month, and a $1,000 balance earns a fee waiver, a genuine discount compared to the $10 per month the firm charges for its basic "BB&T Bright Banking" account, which requires $1,500 for a fee waiver.
Of course, if your eyes have begun to glaze over at these various numbers, then you've heard the main lesson of the Pew report -- it's not easy to pick the right checking account under even the best of circumstances.? Add in a new set of variables, such as those associated with senior accounts, and you?ve got even more confusion. But seniors aren?t the only ones struggling with specialized checking account questions. A related Pew report released the same day looked at student/college checking accounts and found similar problems; some student accounts are inferior to basic accounts, and comparison shopping can be a real challenge.
"We looked at all these disclosures from banks, and 69 pages was the median length," Weinstock said.? "We're worried this is confusing for people ... for students, for seniors."
Pew is trying to get banks to adopt a simple disclosure format -- similar to nutrition labels on food items -- so consumers could more easily comparison shop and pick the account that's best for them.
Already, TD Bank, Chase and Citibank (since July 17) have voluntarily adopted Pew's fee box, she said. The nonprofit research group also is urging the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to make fee disclosure boxes mandatory.
?It would have the same effect as a nutrition label,? she said. ?But until we get that kind of transparency ... it will be hard to make the right choice.?
