The travelling exhibition of the world?s best press photographs of 2011, selected at the 2012 World Press Photo?s contest for professional photographers, will be on display in the Main Gallery of the Visitors Lobby at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 16 August ? 9 September 2012. Now in its 55th year, the annual World Press Photo Contest is universally recognised as the world?s leading international contest for photojournalists, setting the standard for the profession. The contest draws entries by professional press photographers, photojournalists and documentary photographers from across the world, with 5,247 photographers from 124 countries participating this year with 101,254 pictures submitted. The UN Headquarters are located on Fifth Avenue at East 46th Street. Admission is free.

2012 WORLD PRESS PHOTO EXHIBITION OPENS AT THE UN IN NEW YORK
The traveling exhibition of the world?s best press photographs of 2011, selected at the 2012 World Press Photo?s contest for professional photographers, will be on display in the Main Gallery of the Visitors Lobby at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 16 August ? 9 September 2012.
Among the winning images featured in the exhibition is the World Press Photo of the Year 2011, regarded as the photojournalistic encapsulation of the year; a photograph that represents an issue, situation or event of great journalistic importance. The international jury of the 55th annual World Press Photo Contest has selected a picture by Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda as the World Press Photo of the Year 2011. The picture shows a woman holding her wounded son in her arms, inside a mosque used as a field hospital by demonstrators against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, during clashes in Sanaa, Yemen on 15 October 2011. Samuel Aranda was working in Yemen on assignment for The New York Times. He is represented by Corbis Images.
The 2012 jury gave prizes in nine themed categories to 57 photographers of 25 nationalities among which 7 photographers from the USA:

Now in its 55th year, the annual World Press Photo Contest is universally recognized as the world?s leading international contest for photojournalists, setting the standard for the profession. The judging is conducted at the World Press Photo office, where all entries are presented anonymously to the jury, who discusses and debates their merits over a period of two weeks. The jury operates independently, and a secretary without voting rights safeguards a fair procedure. The contest draws entries by professional press photographers, photojournalists and documentary photographers from across the world, with 5,247 photographers from 124 countries participating this year with 101,254 pictures submitted.
The annual exhibition is shown each year at about 100 venues in 45 countries all over the world, subject to the condition that all prize-winning entries are exhibited without any form of censorship. This year?s exhibition contains 169 photographs. It is an annual public showcase for photojournalism comprised of the year?s winning photo, together with award-winning images from each of the nine contest categories. The high quality of photojournalism involved is considered to set a standard in the field.
The exhibition will be opened in the presence of Mr. Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, and H.E. Ambassador Herman Schaper, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations.
Prior to the opening there will be a panel discussion titled ?The Cost of Truth?.
Lynsey Addario, photojournalist, Michael Kamber, photojournalist (TBC), Aidan Sullivan, VP Assignments at Getty Images and David Marshall, representative New York Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) will discuss safety issues for photo(journalists) covering warzones and areas of conflict and natural disaster. The discussion will be moderated by Stephen Mayes, director VII photo agency.
