Somali militants flee invasion to avoid losses

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) ? The al-Qaida-linked rebels who once controlled nearly all of Somalia's capital and sowed fear throughout the southern part of the country are fleeing their last remaining stronghold because they are outgunned and don't want heavy losses, experts said Sunday.

Kenyan troops invaded the southern Somali city of Kismayo early Friday, and the militant Islamist group al-Shabab announced soon after that their forces were leaving the lucrative port town behind. Kenyan forces have not yet moved through the whole town, but a military spokesman said troops met no resistance on Sunday.

After years of bloody street-by-street warfare, African Union troops from Uganda and Burundi pushed al-Shabab out of Mogadishu in August 2011. The AU troops have since taken over towns outside of Mogadishu as well. Kenyan forces invaded Somalia late last year, and have been moving slowly toward Kismayo.

The once-powerful al-Shabab spent years defending its Mogadishu territory, but since being forced out has chosen to retreat from towns when challenged by African Union forces or Ethiopian troops who moved into western Somalia earlier this year.

"The most plausible explanation is that they fear that they'll be outgunned by the coalition force, and as a result are incentivized to retreat," said Abdihakim Aynte, a Somali political analyst in Mogadishu. "We also know al-Shabab, by nature, couldn't engage in conventional warfare, especially in an urban area."

Aynte noted that al-Shabab fought conventional-style battles with Ethiopian troops in 2006 and 2007 "and the result was bloody and nasty."

Col. Cyrus Oguna, the spokesman for the Kenyan military, said that Kenyan troops now stationed in northern Kismayo are making plans to expand south. Oguna said he didn't know how many al-Shabab fighters are left in Kismayo, but that "we can probably say now that the numbers are less than when we got in."

An al-Shabab spokesman said on Twitter that the militants had left town and residents have reported that government and police buildings once occupied by al-Shabab have been abandoned. Oguna said Kenyan forces are prepared for multiple scenarios.

"If they were going to fight, they were going to be fought. If they were going to run away, there were some contingencies to deal with that," Oguna said.

The conventional wisdom on al-Shabab says they will turn into a guerrilla force that attacks using suicide and roadside bombs. Mohamed Sheik Abdi, another political analyst in Mogadishu, said the group will most likely divide up and attack vulnerable targets.

Yusuf Abdi Hussein, a former colonel in the Somali army, said the future political leadership of Kismayo will also dictate what al-Shabab does. The new administration will either empower or thwart their guerrilla attacks, he said.

"Usually Kismayo is contested by rival clans seeking to manipulate the resources and revenues from the port," Hussein said. "Al-Shabab will take advantages of those clan lines and will side with the disgruntled clans to use them against the government and Kenyan forces. They'll also use that issue to illustrate themselves as the only administration that could keep the two rivals living peacefully together."

Al-Shabab tries to impose an ultra-conservative style of Islam and enforce conservative social rules in areas they control. They carry out public punishments like whippings, stonings and executions.

Jury awards casino mogul $20M in slander case

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A jury on Monday awarded casino mogul Steve Wynn $20 million in his slander case against "Girls Gone Wild" founder Joe Francis, who claimed the creator of some of Las Vegas' most upscale resorts threatened to kill him over a gambling debt.

Witnesses disputed Francis' claims during a four-day trial, including Grammy winning record producer Quincy Jones, who Francis said told him about Wynn's threats and showed him a stack of emails that contained them.

Wynn vehemently denied that.

In siding with Wynn, the jury determined that there was clear and convincing evidence that Francis slandered the casino mogul and knew his allegations were false when he made them.

Neither Wynn nor Francis was present in court Monday morning when the verdict was read.

Wynn's attorney on Friday had asked the panel to award the billionaire $12 million plus punitive damages to send a message that false statements that travel far in the Internet age will not be tolerated. A second phase of the trial to decide punitive damages will begin on Tuesday.

The CEO of Wynn resorts and designer of signature Las Vegas casinos such as The Mirage, Bellagio, Wynn and Encore attended the trial.

Francis, who testified, has built a business empire based on videos of young women flashing their breasts for video cameras. His attorney argued that both men may be telling the truth and that Francis may have been misled by Jones. Francis claims he heard about the threats from the Grammy-winner, who is his neighbor, but Jones denies hearing Wynn utter any threats.

Wynn's attorney, Barry Langberg, accused Francis of lying about the threats, pointing out that there was no evidence of any email Wynn had sent and multiple witnesses corroborating the casino mogul's story. He argued that Francis was malicious because he repeated the threats last week in an interview on "Good Morning America."

Francis had previously said at a court hearing that Wynn threatened him over a $2 million gambling debt Francis incurred at Wynn's hotel. Celebrity news website TMZ reported on the hearing and Francis confirmed his allegations to a reporter from the site afterward.

"He committed character assassination," Langberg said. "He did it for a simple reason ? he didn't want to pay his debt."

Francis' attorney, Aaron Aftergood, had argued that Wynn hadn't suffered any damages.

Wynn said after arguments concluded on Friday that he would donate any winnings, minus his attorney's fees, to charities.

A look into common metal finishing applications in the construction ...

In many industries and businesses, a good partnership between your suppliers is often necessary to maintain smooth flowing day-to-day operations. For huge industries like automotive, electronics, construction and the likes, getting reliable suppliers of some of their indispensible needs is key to delivering their services to the customers and assuring that their companies continue to grow. These huge industries are always on a look out for good chemical equipment manufacturers or chemical process equipment manufacturers, ventilation equipment manufacturers, aluminum coating manufacturers, and companies with expertise on the aluminum coating process.

After iron, aluminum is now the second most widely used metal in the world. There are many options in finishing aluminum and that is why it is the most commonly used material in the construction industry, automotive, hospitals, schools, and even space research facilities. Aluminum has a good combination of attractive properties, such as superior malleability, low weight, easy machining, high strength, excellent corrosion resistance and good thermal and electrical conductivity. Aluminum is also popular because it is also very easy to recycle.

Metal finishing and coating is widely used in the metal finishing industry for coating metal surfaces for protection against corrosion and surface scratches. This process usually comes along in building constructions, hospital facilities, office and schools. The most important step of the process is the surface treatment before the actual coating is performed.

One of the most common surface treatment methods is called Anodizing. Anodizing was developed more than fifty years ago as a simple electrochemical process that forms a protective coating of aluminum oxide on the surface of the aluminum. Aluminum oxide is weather resistant, and is a hard, durable, substance that protects the base metal. The lifetime of the finish is proportional to the thickness of the anodic coating applied.

Anodizing is a popular method because it is affordable, will not peel-off because the coating is actually part of the metal and gives it a richer metallic appearance. Anodizing is also unaffected by sunlight.

Another common surface treatment is powder coating. Unlike liquid paint, which is composed of pigment, resin, and solvent, powder paint is simply pigment encapsulated in a powdered resin. You can think of it as simply ?paint without the solvent.?

Powder coating is by far the most common method of applying color to aluminum profiles. Some of its foremost characteristics are minimal risk of running and splattering, capability to withstand high impact abrasion, good formability (can be bent after powder coating), and it is suitable for use in open air ? high UV radiation resistance and corrosion resistance. The real advantage of powder is the reduction in air pollution compared to liquid coatings. A disadvantage of powder is the large batch sizes that are typically required by powder coatings.

When choosing which application or surface treatment to use, there are some guidelines that are based on the project you are going to make. Your choice cannot be based on your preference. For example, if you are handling storefronts or anywhere, any space needing a rich metallic appearance, Anodizing is the most suitable application for you. Anodized surfaces are also best for handrails, and metal columns in interiors of your office spaces or buildings.

Judge OKs contentious part of Ariz immigration law

PHOENIX (AP) ? Arizona authorities can enforce the most contentious section of the state's heavily debated immigration law, according to a federal judge's ruling Wednesday regarding a section of the statute that critics have dubbed the "show me your papers" provision.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton clears the way for police to carry out the requirement that officers, while enforcing other laws, question the immigration status of those they suspect are in the country illegally.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer hailed the ruling on what she called "the most critical section" of the state's immigration law.

Critics have assailed the provision as un-American, saying it paves the way for ethnic discrimination and racial profiling, providing officers a justification for stopping people based on how they look.

Alessandra Soler, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union in Arizona, said the section of the law is "divisive" and will "lead to rampant racial profiling and prolonged detention for countless Latinos, a majority of whom are U.S. citizens and permanent residents."

Proponents say that's a misinterpretation of a law necessary to stop immigrants from illegally coming into the U.S. and using up scant resources. They say there's nothing wrong with being asked to provide identification proving legal status.

Brewer, a Republican, said the ruling "will empower state and local law enforcement, as part of a legal stop or detention, to inquire about an individual's immigration status when the officer has reasonable suspicion."

The provision has been at the center of a two-year legal battle that resulted in a U.S. Supreme Court decision in June upholding the requirement.

After the nation's highest court weighed in, opponents asked Bolton to block the section of the law, arguing that it would cause systematic discrimination and unreasonably long detentions of Latinos if it's enforced.

Brewer's office, however, urged the judge to let the requirement go into effect, saying the law's opponents were merely speculating in their racial profiling claims. The Republican governor's office also said police have received training to avoid discriminatory practices and that officers must have reasonable suspicion that a person is in the country illegally to trigger the requirement.

In her ruling, Bolton said the court will not ignore the clear direction from the Supreme Court that the provision "cannot be challenged further on its face before the law takes effect." She reiterated the high court's interpretation that the law might be able to be challenged as unconstitutional on other grounds.

The Obama administration's case was based on the argument that federal immigration law trumped Arizona law. The challenge didn't confront racial profiling.

The Obama administration declared a measure of victory after the Supreme Court decision, as the court said local police cannot detain anyone on an immigration violation unless federal immigration officials say so.

President Barack Obama said in the aftermath of the ruling that police should not enforce the provision in a way that undermines civil rights.

"No American should ever live under a cloud of suspicion just because of what they look like," he said at the time.

Arizona's law, known as SB1070, was passed in 2010 amid voter frustration with the state's role as the busiest illegal entry point into the country. Five other states ? Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah ? have adopted variations.

Shortly before the law was to take effect in July 2010, Bolton prevented police from enforcing the questioning requirement and other parts of the statute, ruling the Obama administration would likely succeed in its challenge.

Brewer, who signed the measure, appealed the ruling, lost at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and took her case to the Supreme Court.

Brewer's office said the law is expected to go into effect shortly.

Less controversial sections of the law have been in effect since late July 2010, but have rarely been used.

Lydia Guzman, a civil rights activist in Phoenix and leader of the group Respect Respecto, which tracks instances of racial profiling, said that if a higher court doesn't issue an emergency order stopping the provision from taking effect, her organization and others will be watching carefully.

If legal residents feel they are the victims of discriminatory treatment once the provision kicks in, Guzman said, "we want them to contact us. Those are the cases we are going to be taking to court."

The chief sponsor of SB1070, former state Senate President Russell Pearce, called Bolton's ruling a "huge win."

"The problem isn't the law," he said. "The problem is a broken political system and those that fail to keep their commitment to defend the law."

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said the ruling doesn't change what his office already has been doing. The only difference, he said, will be in how U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials respond to calls for pickup.

"Right now the only thing we can do is call ICE and see if they can pick them up under circumstances where we don't have a state charge," Arpaio said. "If we have a state charge, we'll book them into jail."

Lyle Mann, executive director of the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, said law enforcement statewide has been trained on how to implement SB1070 and had been awaiting a start date.

Bolton, with her ruling also granted a preliminary injunction against a statute making it illegal to harbor individuals suspected of being in the country illegally.

FDA approves Medivation prostate cancer drug

(Reuters) - A prostate cancer drug developed by Medivation Inc and Astellas Pharma Inc has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in men whose cancer has spread despite treatment with hormone therapy and chemotherapy, the agency said on Friday.

Approval of the pill, to be sold under the brand name Xtandi, comes three months ahead of the agency's late-November decision deadline.

Wall Street analysts, on average, have forecast Medivation's sales of the drug at $1.2 billion by 2017, according to Thomson Pharma.

Xtandi, or enzalutamide, is one of a new class of drugs, known as androgen inhibitors, designed to interfere with the ability of testosterone to bind to prostate cancer cells. Testosterone is the male hormone that fuels prostate cancer cell growth.

Medivation said it would begin selling the drug in the United States in mid-September at a wholesale price of $7,450 for a 30-day supply.

Medivation and Astellas, which have also filed for European approval, reported in November that a pivotal study of the drug had been stopped early after it became clear that it improved median overall survival by 4.8 months compared with a placebo.

"The need for additional treatment options for advanced prostate cancer continues to be important for patients," Richard Pazdur, director of hematology and oncology products at the FDA's drug evaluation and research center, said in a statement. "Xtandi is the latest treatment for this disease to demonstrate its ability to extend a patient's life."

The FDA last year approved Johnson & Johnson's Zytiga, which is designed to work inside cancer cells to block testosterone production.

Xtandi "should have comparable or higher sales than Zytiga because it appears to have superior efficacy and had no serious adverse events in clinical trials," said ThinkEquity analyst Kimberly Lee.

Zytiga's worldwide sales rose about $32 million to $232 million in the second quarter from the first quarter.

Prostate cancer kills about 250,000 men a year globally and is the second most common cause of cancer death in men in the United States, after lung cancer.

The most common side effects seen with Xtandi were weakness, fatigue and back pain, but the FDA said seizures occurred in about 1 percent of patients and they were taken off the therapy.

Medivation said the FDA approval and European regulatory filing trigger milestone payments from Astellas of $35 million, 10 percent of which it is obligated to pay to the University of California, Los Angeles under a licensing agreement.

Shares of Medivation were halted on Nasdaq after rising $1.36, or 1.4 percent, to $98.78 before the FDA announcement.

Shares of Japan-based Astellas closed down less than a percentage point at 3,820 yen in Tokyo, ahead of the announcement.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? As the remnants of Hurricane Isaac pushed their way up the Mississippi valley on Saturday, spinning off severe thunderstorms and at least two tornadoes, some on the Gulf coast were impatient with the pace of restoring power days after the storm dragged through the region.

While New Orleans streets were bustling again and workers were returning to offshore oil rigs, thousands of evacuees couldn't return home to flooded low-lying areas of Louisiana and more than 400,000 sweltering electricity customers in the state remained without power.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service said two tornadoes touched down in rural areas of north-central Illinois. There were no reports of damage. By midday Saturday, the storm had dumped up to 5 inches of rain in parts of Illinois.

The National Weather Service said it was bringing more rain and some drought relief to parts of the Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys.

In Louisiana, the number without power was down from more than 900,000. However, in heavily populated Jefferson Parish near New Orleans, parish president John Young said Entergy Corp. was too slow in restoring electricity.

"I don't see boots on the ground," said Young, who complained that he has seen repair trucks sitting idle in a staging area and fielded calls from residents and business owners complaining about a lack of progress.

"We've restored about 45 percent of our customers in about a day and a half, Entergy spokesman Chanel Lagarde said. He added that crews have come in from 24 states. "In many situations, crews have driven all day and have worked their 16-hour day and have to rest for the day."

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said he too was anxious to get power back on. "Like everybody else, my patience is wearing thin," he said.

On Saturday afternoon, St. Tammany Parish officials called for a mandatory evacuation of areas south of the Pearl River diversion canal, as they believed Lock 2 was going to fail. It was unclear how many people were affected by the order. The rural area is north of Slidell.

Parts of coastal Plaquemines Parish, where thousands were evacuated, remained under water. But in the water-logged town of Lafitte, Mayor Tim Kerner was allowing property owners and residents to return and begin cleaning up.

Meanwhile, Gulf of Mexico oil platforms were being repopulated after Isaac forced shutdown of most Gulf oil production.

People stuck inside stuffy, powerless homes were comparatively lucky. The governor's office said more than 4,000 were in state, local or Red Cross shelters as of Saturday morning and that doesn't count others who took refuge with friends, family or in hotels.

LaPlace resident Roshonda Girrad was staying in a state-run shelter in Alexandria, 200 miles from her home. She was waiting for the chest-deep waters in her neighborhood to recede.

"The showers are horrible. The food is horrible," Girrad said. "I'm not from around here. I don't know what's going on. We're in the dark."

Isaac dumped as much as 16 inches of rain in some spots, and about 500 people had to be rescued by boat or high-water vehicles.

In New Orleans, most of the downtown area and the French Quarter had power again Saturday. The annual Southern Decadence festival, a celebration of gay culture, was underway. And the Superdome, which sustained minor damage, prepared to host a Saturday night football game between Tulane and Rutgers.

Newly nominated Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney visited flood-ravaged communities on Friday, and President Barack Obama said he would arrive Monday ? appearances this part of the country is all too familiar with after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the 2010 Gulf oil spill.

To the east, officials pumped and released water from a reservoir, easing the pressure behind an Isaac-stressed dam in Mississippi on the Louisiana border. The threat for the earthen dam on Lake Tangipahoa prompted evacuations in small towns and rural areas.

Crews intentionally breached a levee that was strained by Isaac's floodwaters in southeast Louisiana's Plaquemines Parish, which is outside the federal levee system. Parish President Billy Nungesser said the work was slow-going.

All - Time Favorite Gaming Moments

Here's a few, off the top of my head.

1. The first time I saw a video game. It was December 31, 1977, and I was six. My uncle hooked up Pong to my grandma and grandpa's TV. It was on the TV, but I could control what was going on! Mind: Blown.
2. Watching my brother try for a million points on Defender on our Atari 5200. He got really close, but... alas.
3. Finding out about the bug in the DOS version of Civilization that would allow you get a tile improvement in a single turn if you kept clicking on the tile and re-telling it to irrigate/mine/build road. And I still couldn't get far at Emperor level, even with near-instant resource boosting.
4. The one and only time I successfully completed a manned moon mission in Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space. There has never been a game like it since.
5. Winning a game of Civilization 2 at King level on my own merits and a little bit of luck. I haven't excelled at any Civ game as well as I did with Civ2.
6. One night I sat at my computer and realized that it was 2 AM, and I was watching my Sim wander around stomping bugs, when I should have been sleeping. That's when I realized the addictive nature of playing god.
7. City of Heroes, my first MMO. I created the first Cyard there (a Katana/Regeneration Scrapper inspired by Cal Ripken, though it didn't look anything like him... the name is short for Camden Yards.)
8. The night I dinged 50 for the first time. I was in a mission with my brother, which didn't happen all that often, so that made it cooler. I literally roared when I dinged.

I'm sure I'll come up with more later.
