Emotional Cooking? | Ditch Chicken ~ A Food & Drink Adventure

VeggiesI had one of those days at work?

You know, one of those days where the reality of exactly how much is out of my control came into focus.? Acute focus.

Being the type of girl who likes control, this frustrates me to no end.

I?m a counselor, so I?m reminded nearly every day of exactly how much is beyond my influence. One of the first rules of counseling is to accept that you can?t change everything.??And that sometimes things just suck.

This reality slapped me in the face?on a daily basis in a former life, when I worked as a mental health counselor.? Now I work in higher ed. The slaps are still there, they just come less frequently.? Sometimes they come from places that I don?t expect.? Today was one of those days.

Fortunately , I come home to Jason.? He listens to me (not that counselors can say much), offers me a hug, a glass of wine, and a refill if I need it.

We cook dinner.? Life gets better.? I let go a little.

There?s something about chopping vegetables that?s therapeutic after a rough day.? The focus that?s required to dice and mince without losing a finger overrides my attempts to wrap my head around the things I don?t understand or can?t control.

Counseling requires patience and a faith that things will evolve into what they need to over time.? Transforming raw ingredients into a dish is?immediate, and that immediacy is satisfying.

Tonight we pulled together a simple sweet and sour pork dish.? The recipe is courtesy of the?Baltic Maid?blog.? Plenty of chopping and a return to peace.? I?ll worry about what I can and can?t control tomorrow ? tonight we cook, dine, and relax.

Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley: All Our Numbers Are Up 10-30% Each Month

Dennis CrowleyToday at Disrupt NY 2013, Foursquare founder and CEO Dennis Crowley denied rumors that growth was stagnant for Foursquare. “I think there?s a little bit of perception that we?re not growing,”?Crowley said.?”This is false.” In reality, March 2013 was the best month to date. When it comes to growth numbers, Crowley started by saying that “[they] don?t talk about growth numbers so much.” But Foursquare tracks the number of active users, monthly sign-ups, check-ins, web visitors, etc. “All of these numbers are up 10-30 percent,” Crowley said. Yet, Crowley was very candid about the situation the company is in right now. “We?re not the shiny new thing anymore,” he said. The company is currently trying to become the main location tech company and turn into a recommendation app for restaurants, bars, etc. “A lot of people understand what we?re trying to do, being the location layer on the Internet, but there are a lot of people that don?t,” Crowley said. “People are still skeptical,” he continued. “We are like that company that quietly pushes out big enhancements,” Crowley said. The company just wants to focus on improving the product and generating revenue, even if Foursquare receives negative thoughts from time to time. A good part of Crowley’s fireside chat was about busting rumors and stating that Foursquare is a focused company that is on a good path: “We’ve set ourselves up with nice ambitious targets, and we’re set to hit our goals.”

World's longest-running plant monitoring program now digitized

Apr. 29, 2013 ? Researchers at the University of Arizona's Tumamoc Hill have digitized 106 years of growth data on individual plants, making the information available for study by people all over the world.

Knowing how plants respond to changing conditions over many decades provides new insights into how ecosystems behave.

The permanent research plots on Tumamoc Hill represent the world's longest-running study that monitors individual plants, said co-author Larry Venable, director of research at Tumamoc Hill.

Some of the plots date from 1906 -- and the birth, growth and death of the individual plants on those plots have been periodically recorded ever since.

The century-long searchable archive is unique and invaluable, said Venable, a UA professor of ecology and evolutionary biology who has been studying plants on Tumamoc since 1982.

"You can see the ebb and flow of climate, and you can see the ebb and flow of vegetation," he said.

Lead author Susana Rodriguez-Buritica said, "Long-term data sets have a special place in ecology."

The records have allowed scientists to estimate life spans for desert perennials, some of which are very long-lived, Venable said.

In addition, data from the plots on Tumamoc Hill reveal changes in the Sonoran Desert and have been important to key advances in the science of ecology.

For example, the Tumamoc plant censuses helped overturn the long-standing idea that plant communities progress through a series of steps to a stable collection of species known as a climax community.

"The desert wasn't progressing toward a climax community," he said. Instead of being in synch, each species and plot was changing to its own rhythm.

Rodriguez-Buritica, a postdoctoral research associate in the UA department of ecology and evolutionary biology, Venable and their co-authors Helen Raichle and Robert H. Webb of the U.S. Geological Survey and Raymond M. Turner, formerly of USGS, have published a description of their data in the Ecological Society of America's journal Ecology and archived the data set with the society at http://www.esapubs.org/archive/ecol/E094/083/.

The title of their paper is, "One hundred and six years of population and community dynamics of Sonoran Desert Laboratory perennials." The National Science Foundation, the USGS and the U.S. National Park Service funded the archiving.

Landmark research on the physiology and ecology of desert plants has been conducted on Tumamoc Hill ever since the Carnegie Institution of Washington established the Desert Laboratory there in 1903 to study how plants cope with living in the desert.

The first permanent plots, generally 33 feet by 33 feet (10 meters by 10 meters), were established in 1906 by Volney Spalding; nine of his original plots remain to this day. Additional plots were established by Forrest Shreve in the 1910s and 1920s. Two more plots were added in 2010. Currently, there are 21 plots.

For every perennial plant within each plot, the ecologists recorded the species, the area the plant covered and its location. Even seedlings were identified and mapped.

In addition to the written records, repeated photographs of the plots have been taken since 1906. Those photographs are in the Desert Laboratory Collection of Repeat Photography at the USGS in Tucson, Ariz.

Over the years, botanists and ecologists have helped census and re-census the plots. Co-author Turner took over the work when he came to the UA as a botany professor in 1957, continued while a botanist for USGS and continues to do in retirement. In 1993, co-author Webb took up the project and is keeping the censuses going.

Sorting through data recorded from 2012 back to 1906 was a huge challenge, said Rodriguez-Buritica. She had something to build on: Janice Bowers of USGS had begun to archive the records but retired before finishing. Initially, Rodriguez-Buritica and Venable thought a year would do it -- but the task ended up taking much longer.

The records were in several places -- some at the library or in storage at Tumamoc and some in the UA library's Special Collections.

One of the challenges Rodriguez-Buritica faced is that methods of collecting and recording information about plants have changed over time.

Spalding, who established the very first plots in 1906, worked long before the age of computers -- he recorded his observations in a small notebook. Ecologists continued to record their field observations in paper notebooks and created maps on graph paper well into the latter part of the 20th century.

All those paper records had to be digitized.

Only in the last 20 years have scientists been pinpointing plant locations and other observations directly onto a map within their computers by using GPS and GIS technology.

Upon reviewing and checking the data, Rodriguez-Buritica realized that she needed to standardize the information collected over a century so that other scientists could analyze it. Her expertise in applied statistics and spatial ecology was perfect for the job.

She also computerized the series of maps created over time so new investigators could see all the plant location maps created since 1906.

By putting all the information into a standardized digital format and making it easily accessible on the Web, Rodriguez-Buritica, Venable and their colleagues have ensured that other researchers can build on and expand this unique data set.

Tumamoc Hill is one of the birthplaces of plant ecology, Venable said.

"In the first half of the 20th century, all the great plant ecologists either worked here or came though here," he said. "Plant ecologists from the Desert Lab were key in founding the Ecological Society of America and its flagship journal, Ecology. It is satisfying to see the project come full circle and be permanently archived 100 years later by the journal that these researchers started."

The Desert Lab and Tumamoc Hill have been designated as a National Environmental Study Site, a National Historic Landmark, an Arizona State Scientific and Educational Natural Area and are on the National Register of Historic Places.

SoftBank amends Sprint deal terms for Dish inquiry

(Reuters) - Sprint Nextel Corp on Monday said its merger partner SoftBank Corp has waived some terms of their agreement so that Sprint can seek more information from potential suitor Dish Network Corp .

The waiver does not let Sprint disclose nonpublic information or negotiate with Dish, the company said. A Dish spokesman said in a statement that Dish is confident that Sprint's board will find its "proposal is superior by offering Sprint shareholders greater value with a higher price and more cash."

Two weeks ago, Dish shocked markets with a $25.5 billion cash and stock offer for Sprint, which it claimed was superior to the $20.1 billion deal SoftBank and Sprint struck last October.

Last week, Sprint said it had formed a special board committee and hired advisers to consider the Dish bid. But it also said it was still on track to close its deal with SoftBank by July 1.

SoftBank, in a statement Monday, said it had issued the waiver at the request of Sprint's special committee and reiterated its intent to proceed with the deal.

"SoftBank remains highly confident that its fully executed merger agreement with Sprint, under which it has already provided Sprint with $3.1 billion of capital, provides the shareholders of Sprint significantly more value than the highly leveraged approach made by Dish on April 15th," it said.

Dish shares were trading 0.3 percent lower while Sprint shares were 0.2 percent higher on Monday.

Gizmodo's Transformers Trip:How They're Made,Where They Come From

Recently, Gizmodo had a chance to go out to the Transformers HQ at Hasbro's home office outside of Providence, Rhode Island. We got to see how the classic toys are designed from the ground up, as well as the workshop where early prototypes for all of Hasbro's toys are put together. It was a pretty great time.

How They Filmed Return Of The Jedi's Absurdly Great Speeder Chase

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Return Of The Jedi, the Ewok-filled amazingness that spelled the end of the original Star Wars trilogy. That film contained one of the most amazing high-speed chases ever seen on film. This is how they brought that death-defying chase to life.

One of the highlights of Return Of The Jedi is the speeder chase between the Rebels and the Empire. The Rebels need to distract the Scout Troopers in order to deactivate the shield generator, which would let the Rebel fleet penetrate the Death Star and defeat the Galactic Empire.

But you knew that already.

In the scene, Luke and Leia jump on their speeders and then race through the forest at seriously crazy high speeds. There are tons of narrow misses and there was obviously no way to safely or realistically do this at those high speeds.

That's because it wasn't close to real. The natural assumption is the chase was filmed on a dirtbike and then the footage was sped up, but there's a problem with that: Dirtbikes aren't exactly the smoothest riding vehicles in the world. The speeders float on the air, which means they need to appear smoother than a motorcycle could ever be.

The solution was clever and somewhat old fashioned. Cameras were operated at 3/4 of a frame per second as cameramen walked through Cheatham Grove, CA with steadicams. It sounds like it was back-breaking work:

Just 100 more yards. My left hand is slippery with sweat. Legs tired. Brain hurts most of all. I wonder if really intense concentration produces any lingering harmful effects...look at Bobby Fisher! (At a camera speed of only 3/4 frame per second, a thousand feet of precise walking gets you just 16 feet of VistaVision in the can, and every take you forget a few more important phone numbers, or a family birthday.) Is it worth it? At this rate I will be illiterate in a week and a vegetable in two.

Not only was cameraman Garrett Brown wearing the steadicam, he also had two gyroscopes attached to it for extra stabilization, although a slight amount of wobble was still wanted to make it semi-realistic. He also had to concentrate on the target like a sniper. One misstep would mean a ruined take and another slow trudge through the forest. At 3/4 speed, Brown says that 1,000 feet of walking got him 16 usable feet of footage.

Brown was personally skeptical of the idea when it was presented to him. But instead of saying no, he decided to go for it. What resulted was a cameraman walking slowly through the forest with a ton of equipment, where any slight error would cause him to start over again.

The 3/4 speed footage was sped up 30 times in order to make the film the standard 24 frames per seconds. That also made the speed appear to be a mind-boggling 120 MPH through the forest. Brown had to repeatedly walk through the forest in order to get the right shots. Filming at a slow speed like that also didn't let them calculate for exposure, but it seems that their guesswork was spot on and the corrections done in post production made for a great looking scene.

Was the agony of walking through the forest super slowly and making hundreds of cuts to get a three minute chase worth it? Damn right it was.

Nest 35 update adjusts for sunlight and humidity, finetunes fan control

Nest Labs isn't counting solely on the allure of discounts from power companies to reel us in this spring. It's pushing out a 3.5 update to all versions of the Nest Learning Thermostat that should be make it smarter about saving money -- even if it means spending a little up front. Along with the utility tie-ins from last week, the upgrade adds a Cool to Dry mode that invokes air conditioning when it's too humid, raising the energy bill slightly to avoid a costlier mold outbreak. The thermostat also won't be easily duped by the sun: a new Sunblock setting prevents unnecessary cooling whenever direct sunlight affects the temperature reading. Homeowners who just want more precision, meanwhile, may be happy with both refined fan scheduling (shown above) as well as mobile app updates that introduce alert messages and a more thermostat-like interface. Those with Nest units connected to WiFi should see version 3.5, and hopefully its intended savings, by 9PM Eastern tonight.

Taliban vow suicide and "insider" attacks in new spring offensive

KABUL (Reuters) - The Taliban in Afghanistan vowed on Saturday to start a new campaign of mass suicide attacks on foreign military bases and diplomatic areas, as well as damaging "insider attacks", as part of a new spring offensive this year.

The offensive was announced via emails from Taliban spokesmen. The Islamist group has made similar announcements in recent years, which have sometimes been followed by spikes in violence after Afghanistan's harsh winter months.

The announcement of more mass suicide and insider attacks will likely be greeted with concern by the NATO-led military coalition, which is in the final stages of a fight against the Taliban-led insurgency that began in late 2001.

However, there was no immediate reaction to the Taliban's statement from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

After announcing their spring offensive last year, the Taliban launched a large attack in Kabul involving suicide bombers and an 18-hour firefight targeting Western embassies, ISAF headquarters and the Afghan parliament.

The start of the traditional "fighting season" is particularly important this year, with ISAF increasing the rate at which it hands security responsibility to Afghan forces before the withdrawal of most foreign troops by the end of 2014.

The Taliban statement said this year's offensive, named after Khalid bin Waleed, one of the companions of the Islamic prophet Mohammad, will involve "special military tactics" similar to those carried out previously.

"Collective martyrdom operations on bases of foreign invaders, their diplomatic centers and military airbases will be even further structured while every possible tactic will be utilized in order to detain or inflict heavy casualties on the foreign transgressors," the statement said.

Insider attacks, also known as "green on blue" attacks, involve Afghan police or soldiers turning their guns on their ISAF trainers and counterparts. They have grown considerably since last year and have strained relations between Kabul and foreign forces.

However, there is considerable debate over how many can be attributed to infiltration by insurgents and how many are by disgruntled members of the Afghan security forces.

Last August, then ISAF commander, U.S. General John Allen, said about a quarter of such attacks involved the Taliban.

The spring offensive was coordinated to begin on May 28 - or the 8th of the Islamic month of Thaur - to coincide with a national holiday to mark the overthrow of the Soviet-backed government of Mohammad Najibullah in 1992, the statement said.

"Evidence" of Syrian chemical weapon use not up to U.N. standard

By Anthony Deutsch

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Assertions of chemical weapon use in Syria by Western and Israeli officials citing photos, sporadic shelling and traces of toxins do not meet the standard of proof needed for a U.N. team of experts waiting to gather their own field evidence.

Weapons inspectors will only determine whether banned chemical agents were used in the two-year-old conflict if they are able to access sites and take soil, blood, urine or tissue samples and examine them in certified laboratories.

That type of evidence, needed to show definitively if banned chemicals were found, has not been presented by governments and intelligence agencies accusing Syria of using chemical weapons against insurgents.

"This is the only basis on which the OPCW would provide a formal assessment of whether chemical weapons have been used," Michael Luhan, a spokesman for the Hague-based Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said.

With Syria blocking the U.N. mission, it is unlikely they will gain that type of access any time soon.

The White House and Western diplomats at the U.N. said they believe Syria had "probably" fired chemical munitions, but failed to name the chemical in question.

The Israeli military this week suggested Syrian forces used sarin and showed reporters pictures of a body with symptoms indicating the nerve gas was the cause of death.

Ralf Trapp, an independent consultant on chemical and biological weapons control, said "there is a limit to what you can extract from photograph evidence alone. What you really need is to get information from on the ground, to gather physical evidence and to talk to witnesses as well as medical staff who treated victims."

The White House, which called the use of chemicals weapons in Syria a "red line" for possible military intervention, said its assessment was partly based on "physiological" samples. But a White House official speaking on condition of anonymity declined to detail the evidence. It is unclear who supplied it.

Even if samples were made available to the OPCW by those making the assertions, the organization could not use them.

"The OPCW would never get involved in testing samples that our own inspectors don't gather in the field, because we need to maintain chain of custody of samples from the field to the lab to ensure their integrity," said Luhan.

Established to enforce the 1997 Chemical Weapons Convention, which bans the use of toxic agents in warfare, the OPCW has exhaustive rules on how inspectors collect and handle evidence, starting with the sealing of a site like a crime scene.

Multiple samples must be taken and there need to be "blank" samples from unexposed matter and tissue, to set a baseline against which levels of contamination could be determined.

The samples would be split, sealed and flown in dark, cooled air transports to up to three certified laboratories, including one at the OPCW's headquarters in The Hague.

A team of 15 experts, put together in response to a request from U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to investigate the claims, has been on standby in Cyprus for nearly three weeks.

Headed by Swedish scientist Ake Sellstrom, it includes analytical chemists and World Health Organization experts on the medical effects of exposure to toxins.

Latin America threatened with cancer epidemic | The Raw Story

By Agence France-Presse
Friday, April 26, 2013 7:13 EDT

?

Latin America faces a cancer epidemic unless governments act quickly to improve health care systems and treat the poor, scientists said.

The researchers pointed to around 13 deaths for every 22 cancer cases in the region, compared to around 13 deaths for every 37 cases in the United States and around 13 deaths for every 30 cases in Europe.

The main reason, according to the study published in the British journal The Lancet Oncology, is that too many people are diagnosed with cancer at a late stage when the disease is much harder to treat and more likely to kill.

?Researchers estimate that by 2030, 1.7 million cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Latin America and the Caribbean, with more than one million deaths from cancer predicted to occur annually,? said the report launched at the Latin American Cooperative Oncology Group (LACOG) 2013 conference in Sao Paulo.

The disease currently means losses of $4 billion a year for the region, including not just the cost of treatment and medicine, but also the impact on businesses and the economy of lives prematurely cut short by cancer.

?These costs will rise substantially if governments do not take coordinated action now to arrest the growing impact of cancer in the region,? the report warned.

And it noted that ?many people across the region, especially those in poor, rural, or indigenous communities, have little or no access to cancer services, a problem exacerbated by low, and highly inequitable, health investment in most Latin American countries.?

Another factor is that more than half (320 million people) of the Latin American population have inadequate or no health insurance, the authors said.

?Latin American countries have focused their health investment on prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, whereas spending on non-communicable diseases, such as cancer, has not kept pace,? noted Paul Goss of Harvard Medical School.

?However, cancers are diseases of aging people, and researchers estimate that by 2020 more than 100 million people in Latin America will be over 60 years of age.?

Goss led the team of experts, predominantly from Latin America, that produced the report.

While conceding that many regional countries have managed to improve some aspects of cancer care in recent years, the study called for measures to address health inequities, rethink health infrastructure and access to drugs and medical devices, and increased government spending on health.

Governments can bring down cancer rates at relatively low cost, by encouraging people to give up smoking, avoid cooking smoke, reduce their alcohol intake and adopt healthy diets and exercise, it noted.

Tesla announces new service details, unconditional warranty for Model S battery

Tesla CEO Elon Musk talked a bit about his goals for expanded service options in his interview with us earlier this month, and he's today detailed some of those options that the company is ready to roll out. That includes one perk that's been mentioned previously: the ability to get a Model S loaner to tide you over when you have to turn your car in for service. What's more, that loaner will be a top-of-the-line Model S regardless of the car you turn in (there's a fleet of 85 to start with, each with valet service to your location), and customers in "most markets" can also opt to get a Tesla Roadster as a loaner if they'd prefer to try out something sportier. Musk further explains that customers can even choose to keep that loaner car if they like it better, and simply pay the difference.

Beyond that, Tesla is now making annual checkups entirely optional, meaning that your warranty will still be valid for the full term even if you never take your car in. And rounding things out is what Tesla describes as an "unconditional warranty" on Model S batteries, which will let owners get a factory reconditioned unit as a replacement even in the case of user error. You can find the full details on the new options in Musk's blog post announcing the news linked below.

Iraq fears rise as clashes spread to northern city

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Clashes spread to a key northern city and gunmen took over a town elsewhere in Iraq on Thursday, raising the death toll from three days of violence to more than 150 people as a wave of Sunni unrest intensified.

The turmoil is aggravating an already sour political situation between the Shiite-led government and Sunnis, who accuse Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government of neglect and trying to disenfranchise their Muslim sect.

Al-Maliki appeared on national television appealing for calm amid fears the country is facing a return to full-scale sectarian fighting more than a year after U.S. troops withdrew.

The spreading violence came as Iraqi electoral officials announced preliminary results in local elections held Saturday ? Iraq's first since U.S. troops left in December 2011.

With 87 percent of the ballots counted, al-Maliki's State of Law bloc was on track to win the most votes in eight of the 12 provinces participating in the vote, including Baghdad and the southern oil hub of Basra.

Anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's bloc was ahead in the southern Shiite province of Maysan, while a provincial level coalition was leading in the Shiite province of Najaf. Local coalitions also were ahead in the largely Sunni province of Salahuddin and the mixed province of Diyala.

The government last month delayed voting in two predominately Sunni provinces where anti-government protests have raged for months, citing security concerns.

The final results will offer a key measure of support for the country's political blocs and could boost the victors' chances heading into next year's parliamentary elections.

The election announcement was overshadowed, however, by the rising unrest.

Gunmen and police clashed for hours in several districts of the former Sunni insurgent stronghold of Mosul before security forces brought the situation under control Thursday afternoon.

Police said 31 militants and 10 police were killed in the fighting in Mosul, which has been one of the hardest areas to tame since bloodshed erupted after the U.S.-led invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein. Many residents remained holed up in their homes out of fear, although the city was largely quiet by evening.

Clashes also erupted late Thursday between gunmen and security forces in the former al-Qaida stronghold of Baqouba, prompting authorities to impose a curfew there and in the surrounding province, according to police.

The latest unrest began on Tuesday when fighting broke out in the northern town of Hawija during a security crackdown on a protest encampment. Three members of the Iraqi security force and at least 20 other people were killed. The government said gunmen fired on the security forces as they entered the camp to make arrests related to an earlier incident.

Iraqi Sunnis say they face discrimination, particularly in the application of a tough anti-terrorism law that they believe unfairly targets their sect, which formed the backbone of the insurgency but also was key to the downturn in violence after tribal leaders turned against al-Qaida in Iraq.

The government frequently carries out arrests in Sunni areas on charges of al-Qaida or Baathist ties. Protests escalated in December after the arrest of bodyguards assigned to Finance Minister Rafia al-Issawi, a Sunni, in late December.

The Defense Ministry said in a statement that gunmen had taken control of the Suleiman Beg police station and other governmental buildings, and were deployed in the streets of the town, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) north of Baghdad. The ministry did not provide information on casualties.

On Wednesday, police and hospital officials reported fierce clashes in the town that resulted in the deaths of four soldiers and 12 others, including some gunmen.

The mayor of the city of Tuz Khormato, to which Suleiman Beg is administratively annexed, said security forces had laid siege to the small town and sporadic clashes were continuing. The official, Shalal Abdool, said there were additional casualties among gunmen on Thursday, but he couldn't provide numbers.

In his first public comments since the Hawija killings, al-Maliki urged Iraqis to unite for the sake of the country and stand up against extremists.

"We all have to shoulder responsibility after what happened in Hawija and what's going on today in Suleiman Beg and other areas," he said. "If (sectarian) conflict erupts, there will be no winner or loser. All will lose, whether in southern or northern or western or eastern Iraq."

Northeast of Baghdad, the Iraqi army has surrounded the town of Qara Tappah, where deadly clashes also were reported on Wednesday. The army and some tribal leaders in the town are in contact to try to ease the tensions, and the situation is calm for now, according to local police. Qara Tappah is about 120 kilometers (75 miles) northeast of the capital.

Gunmen also opened fire on a police checkpoint near Fallujah, west of Baghdad, killing two policemen and wounding two others, according to police.

A Sunni politician who recently announced his resignation from the Cabinet urged al-Maliki, a Shiite, to step down to calm the tensions.

"Iraq is in a dire situation now and I believe that there must be serious solutions," Abdul-Karim al-Samarraie told The Associated Press on Thursday in a phone interview. "One of the solutions is the resignation of the prime minister and for him to leave the government to another who can run it temporarily. Otherwise, the options for Iraq are only dangerous ones."

Al-Samarraie is Iraq's minister of science and technology. He and Minister of Education Mohammed Tamim submitted their resignations this week in the wake of the killings in Hawija. Al-Samarraie said that Industry Minister Ahmed al-Karbouli also submitted his resignation.

Al-Karbouli could not be reached for comment, but an official in his office confirmed the move.

In other violence reported by police and hospital officials Thursday, attackers detonated explosives on a key oil pipeline linking Kirkuk to the Turkish port of Ceyhan near the town of Shurqat, disrupting crude oil exports.

A roadside bomb also struck two army vehicles patrolling south of Baghdad, killing two soldiers and wounding six others. And a car bomb went off near a bus stop in Najaf, killing four people and wounding 12.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information.

Hon Hai Looks Toward Indonesia's Promising Economy As Apple's Growth Slows

Hon Hai logoHon Hai is planning to diversify its business away from producing Apple devices by signing an agreement with Indonesia to make and sell handsets in that country, reports Reuters. A Hon Hai spokesman said that the company, which derives about 60 to 70 percent of its revenue from manufacturing work for Apple, hopes to sign the agreement next month. Hon Hai, the parent company of Foxconn, is one of Apple’s largest suppliers. The Taiwanese company joins other manufacturers looking to make their business less dependent on Apple contracts as the Cupertino company’s growth slows. Earlier this month, Hon Hai reported a 19 percent in 1Q sales, due in large part to falling demand for iPhones. Another heavily Apple-dependent manufacturer, Cirrus Logic, has said that it is trying to diversify its customer base and is now shipping to several mobile phone manufacturers. Fellow Apple chip maker SK Hynix may start selling to Samsung, a deal that could help the Korean tech giant avoid supply disruptions for its Galaxy S4 smartphone, a key iPhone rival. Hon Hai spokesman Simon Hsing told Reuters that the company is currently in talks with several Indonesian phone companies and will finalize the details of its investment and partnership agreements after securing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the government. Indonesian Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan has previously stated that Hon Hai’s investment would be between $5 billion and $10 billion, and that it would build a factory near Jakarta to assemble 3 million handsets a year. Hon Hai won’t export phones from Indonesia or manufacture Apple products there. Instead, it will make devices for local brands and sell them domestically. Latching onto Indonesia is a savvy move for Hon Hai because the nation’s growing economy will be driven in large part by the tech industry. Hsing said that the phone market in Indonesia is worth $2.4 billion. According to a recent IDC report, IT spending in Indonesia is forecasted to reach $15.8 billion this year. Furthermore, up to 70 percent of Indonesia’s population is working age–in other words, they are the people who will drive spending on consumer tech.

One Of The World's Biggest Gaming Shows Taken Down By YouTube

Criticisms of YouTube's automated "takedown" process are nothing new. The way Google handles complaints against clips, whether by rights holders or concerned parties, is basically to shoot first and ask questions later.

Latest example: the main YouTube channel for Yogscast, the online show that made its name with Minecraft videos - and which has over 4 million subscribers - was blocked for hours earlier today when it was falsely flagged as being run by a 13 year-old. Which it is not. Something Google should know, since Yogscast is a featured channel, and thus had already had to verify with YouTube their ID credentials.

A human being could have easily found this out, but Google's takedowns are handled by robots, and robots are lacking in compassion (and also basic investigative capabilities).

Sounds minor, especially when you consider the site was back up and running within a few hours, but for these guys, that's a big deal!

If only James Cameron could have seen that the 21st century's biggest problem with AI was not their wish to kill us all, but to judiciously take down our YouTube videos.

Padres snap?Brewers' nine-game winning streak

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:58 a.m. ET April 25, 2013

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Edinson Volquez is starting to put together strong starts for the Padres.

Volquez (1-3) allowed just five singles and struck out three and Carlos Quentin hit his first home run as San Diego beat Milwaukee 2-1 on Wednesday night, snapping the Brewers nine-game winning streak.

"We've seen the good in the year and a month that he (Volquez) has been here," said Padres manager Bud Black. "No doubt he struggled in a couple of his five starts this season. I thought he pitched well. Last week in San Francisco (six innings, two runs) this was a carryover and obviously a much better performance."

Black noted that this was the fourth time in Volquez' 127 starts that he hasn't allowed a walk. It was also the first time he hasn't walked a batter in seven-plus innings.

"I was throwing strikes, no walks today, it was about time," laughed Volquez. "It was great. All my pitches were there, my curve was pretty good, my changeup. Everything was there I can't complain about anything tonight."

The victory snapped a five-game skid by the Padres.

"After losing five games in a row, we stopped the bleeding," said Volquez. "This was a great game tonight and I got great support early in the game and kept it that way."

Quentin, who came off his eight-game suspension on Tuesday, hit a shot into the third deck off Brewers starter Marco Estrada with one out in the fourth for the first run of the game. Quentin has now hit a home run against all 29 teams that he has faced in his career. The only team he has not hit a home run against it the White Sox, for whom he played for, but has never faced.

It was the seventh home run given up by Estrada (2-1) in five starts. He pitched 6 1-3 innings allowing two runs, walking two and striking out three.

Luke Gregerson pitched a scoreless eighth for the Padres and Huston Street came on in the ninth to get his third save in three opportunities.

The save was a bit precarious as Carlos Gomez and Yuniesky Betancourt had back-to-back doubles to make it a 2-1 game. However, Martin Maldonado was called out for being out of the batter's box when the ball he hit, connected with him in fair territory. And that was the final out of the game.

"The (home plate umpire Paul Emmel) said he was out of the box," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke. "To end the game, you'd better know darn well that he's out of the box. You could see the ball coming off his shoulder as Maldy was taking a step toward first base, he's definitely not out of the box".

In addition to his dominant pitching night, Volquez also helped produce the Padres second run in the fifth.

Nick Hundley singled with one out and Volquez layed down a sacrifice bunt. Catcher Jonathan Lucroy threw to first where second baseman Rickie Weeks was waiting for the out. However, Hundley, after hesitating around second, headed for third base that was unoccupied. As he was approaching the bag Weeks rifled the ball across the diamond to a moving shortstop Jean Segura, who was also heading for third, but the ball bounced in the dirt and wound up in foul territory in left field and Hundley scored.

NOTES: Brewers 3B Aramis Ramirez, who has been on the DL since April 6th with a sprained left knee, was taking BP and taking ground balls Wednesday night and according to manager Ron Roenicke, "he could be back in the lineup somewhere in the next home stand." .RHP John Axford could be back in his closer role soon according to Roenicke. "I think right now we are not going to flip Jim Henderson (current closer) and John (Axford). The way Ax threw yesterday (Tuesday) he could win every ball game he went in. It wouldn't take much for me to flip the two," said Roenicke. "I think Ax with his breaking ball and the way he's been throwing could have that repeat year (46 saves) that he had two years ago."... The Padres newest pitcher LH Robbie Erlin was in the bullpen Wednesday and was looking at hurling in long relief according to Padres manager Bud Black. Erlin, 22, had his contract selected from Triple-A Tucson.

Where Do Hawaii's Great White Sharks Come From?

Although it's a relatively rare occurrence, great white sharks have occasionally been sighted near the Hawaiian Islands throughout history (and even prehistory ? teeth from white sharks have been found in artifacts from ancient islanders).

The small number of sightings and lack of young sharks seen, however, suggests that there isn't one group of sharks that lives in the region, and that the animals that have been spotted are drifters who have wandered far from their native waters. But whence do they come?

A recent study compiled all records of great white shark sightings around Hawaii in modern history ? a total of 13 ? and all published reports of satellite-tracked sharks that reached the region, a total of 22. By comparing the records with data from tracking studies, it appears the sharks most likely come from the population centered in the eastern Pacific, along the west coast of Mexico and the United States. ?

Scientists came to that conclusion after noting that all of the sharks seen in the fall around the Hawaiian Islands are female. That matches the life history of the great white sharks in the eastern Pacific. Female great white sharks from this group complete a two-year migration from Guadalupe Island, Mexico, where they mate, after which they roam far and wide into the Pacific, before returning to Baja California to give birth to pups (after which they go back to Guadalupe Island). Males, on the other hand, complete a one-year migration from the island, and thus wouldn't be around in the fall.

There is also a population of great white sharks centered near Japan that could reach the Hawaiian Islands, but the scientists found no evidence for that in the study, published recently in the Journal of Marine Biology.

Modern records of great white sharks "date back to May 1926, when the remains of a man who apparently drowned in waters of Haleiwa, Oahu, were recovered 16 days later in the stomach of a large shark landed" nearby, the authors wrote in the study. The man, a soldier, was identified primarily by his swim trunks, which were issued by the U.S. Army.

"We learned that [great] white sharks occur in Hawaii across a broader part of the annual cycle than previously thought ? we recorded observations from every month except November," said study author Kevin Weng, a researcher at the University of Hawaii ? Manoa, in a statement from the school.?
