Why SMBs Need SEO Consulting Services

Small businesses today have the hardest time getting exposure in the search engines, and this is one of the most important marketing vehicles for small business survival, especially for local marketing and driving more foot traffic to the brick and mortar business, and certainly for any new online or eCommerce business.

Marketing for small businesses today has changed dramatically and the more people reached, the better the business has for survival. But this takes a great deal of work, unfortunately, on the part of the small business owner, who is occupied with running operations and little time to do the footwork.

An SEO consulting service can help small business owners with many aspects of online marketing, including:

  • Designing the best website for optimum search engine placement
  • Local search engine metrics and rankings for industry keywords
  • Online promotions that reach mobile and other Internet shoppers
  • Social media marketing setup and promotions
  • Local online business directory listings and Google Maps

Tapping into the online marketplace is essential for any business owner today. If you are not online and taking advantage of local or national SEO opportunities as well as many other search engine and social marketing programs, you could be avoiding an entire set of demographics.

Here are some interesting online marketing statistics to take into consideration:

  1. In the U.S., online shoppers are expected to increase by 15.4% in 2012, becoming a $209.3 billion marketing vehicle by 2013.
  2. 7 out of 10 Americans search for products and information on businesses online, about 43% in the U.S. now using mobile devices such as smarphones and tablets to access the Internet.
  3. Global internet traffic is growing at an average of 29% per year. The U.S. expected to grow 20% each year.
  4. 60% of consumers in the U.S. shop online, the largest demographic being ages 31-44.
  5. 73.19% of Facebook users visit at least one product page.
  6. 50.7% of smartphone users check store hours or locations.

SEO consulting services today should offer more than just organic search engine optimization and take the approach of ?marketing? a business just as effectively as direct, traditional sales and marketing teams have in the past, before the Internet.

Google has placed its stance on the natural sharing of business websites and eCommerce sites, so heavily manipulated or SEO tricks are no longer accepted as a viable means to gain rankings in search engines. A reputable SEO consultant can ensure you are conducting best practices when you embark on your search engine marketing venture.

It?s important to note that SEO has become a more holistic profession and encompasses many areas of the web marketing channel, enabling business visiblity in social media and search engine spaces.

If your store needs more traffic, whether your online or offline, you?ll need to consider that your competition has effective SEO consulting services and online marketing programs in place. To compete or even survive in the post-recession economy, all businesses will need to stay on top of the online consumer trends in the marketplace.

Hype over Higgs boson hits new heights

ATLAS Collaboration / CERN

This diagram shows the results of a proton-on-proton collision in the Large Hadron Collider's ATLAS detector last September, with four muons indicated by red tracks. Such a result could be consistent with the Standard Model with or without the Higgs boson, depending on the analysis of multiple events.

By Alan Boyle

Has the Higgs boson finally been detected? It's almost gotten to the point that if a discovery of some sort doesn't come out of next week's update on the multibillion-dollar subatomic search, it'll be a big surprise. But how far will the announcement go, and what will it mean for the future of physics?

To refresh your memory, the Higgs boson is the only fundamental subatomic particle predicted by theory but not yet detected. It's thought to play a role in endowing some particles, such as the W and Z boson, with mass ... while leaving other particles, such as the photon, massless. The Higgs mechanism, proposed by British physicist Peter Higgs and others in the 1960s, could have played a role in electroweak symmetry breaking, which was a key event in the rise of the universe as we know it.

The Higgs boson is so key to the current understanding of fundamental physics that Nobel-winning scientist Leon Lederman nicknamed it the "God Particle"?? a term that has been making other physicists wince ever since. Another religion-tinged cliche would be to call it the "holy grail of particle physics," as CERN physicist John Ellis has. He says finding the Higgs is a key goal for the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider.

"That's one thing that we're really looking forward to with the LHC," Ellis told me five years ago. "In fact, back when we persuaded the politicians to stump up the money to build the thing, that's probably what we told them."

Last December, the teams reported that they saw "tantalizing hints" of the Higgs' existence at a mass of around 125 billion electron volts, or 125 GeV. But the confidence in those results was not yet high enough to claim a discovery.?Now the teams behind the collider's CMS and ATLAS experiments have collected higher piles of data, at higher energy levels, sparking higher expectations.

An hour-long BBC Horizon documentary focuses on the hunt for the Higgs boson.

The 5-sigma fetish
When physicists talk about their confidence, they talk in terms of statistical "sigma" levels. The higher the sigma, the less likely that the results are just a fluke. In particle physics, 3 sigma constitutes strong evidence, but it takes 5 sigma to accept the results as a discovery. At the 5-sigma level, statisticians say there's roughly one chance out of 3 million that you're leaping to the wrong conclusion, as opposed to a 1-in-1,000 chance at the 3-sigma level.?That distinction makes a big difference when you're sifting through billions upon billions of proton-on-proton collision reports.

Last year, the best that the LHC teams could do was 3.6 sigma for ATLAS, and 2.6 for CMS. Now physicists are looking for a 5.

For three weeks, the teams have been running the numbers on their experimental results in secret, so as to avoid any chance that one analysis will influence the other. Their results are to be announced during a presentation at the CERN nuclear research center in Geneva, which will be webcast starting at 9 a.m. CEST (3 a.m. ET) on July 4. Although no official word has leaked out, the unofficial word is that someone looking for a discovery could get to the magic number.

"Reports from the experiments indicate that at least one of them, if not both, will reach the 5 sigma level of significance for the Higgs signal, when they combine 2011 and 2012 data and the most sensitive channel. So, this will definitely be the long-awaited Higgs discovery announcement, and party time for HEP [high-energy physics] physicists," Columbia mathematician Peter Woit wrote on his Not Even Wrong blog a week ago.

Since then, other physicist-bloggers have been fine-tuning the expectations. Here's a selection:

  • On the Resonaances blog, physicist Adam Falkowski (a.k.a. Jester) has a countdown clock ticking toward the Higgs discovery. "It is not clear, at least to me, if either of the two experiments will pass the 5-sigma fetish. But it does not really matter. ... What's going to change next Wednesday is that the status of the Higgs will be upgraded from 'almost certain' to 'beyond reasonable doubt.'"
  • On Quantum Diaries, Southern Methodist University physicist Aidan Randle-Conde advises against trying to combine the data from the two teams to get to 5 sigma. "With all this pressure to get as much out of the data as possible, it's tempting to move too quickly and do what we can to get a discovery, but now is not the time to rush things," he writes.
  • On the?ViXra Log, Philip Gibbs says that when CERN's researchers report their progress, "it is likely that the main question they are investigating will switch from 'Is there a Higgs Boson?' to 'Is it the Standard Model Higgs boson?'"
  • On a blog titled "Of Particular Significance,"?Rutgers physicist Matt Strassler advises caution,?but also suggests getting "the cases of champagne ready, in case the time has finally come to pop the corks." He points out that a discovery announcement would by no means be the end of the story. "Even if we see strong evidence of a Higgs-like particle ... the correct understanding of that particle?? in particular, determining whether it is or isn't a 'simplest Higgs'?? may take years."
  • As we approach H-Hour, you can expect to hear more via all these outlets as well as other blogs such as Cosmic Variance?and "A Quantum Diaries Survivor."

Physicist Gigi Rolandi discusses the Higgs search in a CERN video.

Hedging on the Higgs
What Strassler and Gibbs are saying is important: Technically speaking, CERN is unlikely to announce that the Higgs boson has been definitively discovered. It's more likely that physicists will talk about a new particle that has a signature consistent with the Higgs but has to be investigated further.

CERN hinted at that approach last week in the news release announcing Wednesday's webcast. "It's a bit like spotting a familiar face from afar," said the center's director general, Rolf Heuer. "Sometimes you need closer inspection to find out whether it's really your best friend, or actually your best friend's twin."

Gigi Rolandi, a senior research physicist at CERN, used a similar analogy in a video released this week, referring to crops of corn (which he calls maize, as most Europeans do), wheat (which he calls corn) and poppy flowers. Some particles are as easy to spot as a red poppy in a wheat field, he said. But not the Higgs.?"The search for the Higgs is more similar to looking for a single plant of maize among many, many corn plants, than looking for a poppy among the corn," he said.

We'll get a foretaste of Wednesday's proceedings on Monday, when Fermilab is due to provide its final update on the Higgs boson search, based on the full set of data from the now-closed Tevatron. Will Fermilab try to steal some of CERN's thunder, at least for a couple of days? Stay tuned....

Y! Big Story: 'Fast and Furious' meets 'The Wire'

"Fast & Furious" (Jamie Trueblood_Universal Pictures)

The federal investigation into Mexican gun-trafficking was dubbed Operation Fast and Furious, because the suspects involved liked a little auto-sideshow action. The better analogy might be "The Wire"?to cover a roiling case of vindictive office politics, cowboy agents, sensationalized reporting, the clash of Second Amendment rights and gun crimes, and election-year bickering that has resulted in the first-ever contempt charge against a sitting Cabinet officer.

Gun seizuresWhat is Operation Fast and Furious?: The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives wanted to put a stop to the purchase of guns in the United States, that were later used across the border in cartel crimes. The case has been hampered by office politics, prosecutorial reluctance, and weak enforcement. For instance, straw purchases?the act of buying guns for others?is not illegal in Arizona.

What Republicans are loath to admit is that the ATF tried Fast and Furious in lieu of other means of combating illegal weapons-trafficking partly because Congress, at the behest of gun-rights advocates, has resisted virtually every proposal to empower the bureau against the buying and selling of firearms destined for illegal use in Mexico. (June 21, Washington Post)

The operation ended in January 2011, about a month after Brian Terry was killed in a rare border shootout near Rio Rico, Arizona; he was the fifth Border Patrol agent to die in 2010, and two guns used in the shoot-out allegedly came from Fast and Furious.

The massive fallout: As a result of Terry's death, reports emerged was the belief that ATF allowed known straw buyers for the cartels to "walk" the guns across the border instead of intercepting them and arresting the buyers. Agents planned to track guns to the cartel buyers and arrest them, but accusations flew that ATF purportedly lost track of hundreds of weapons. Politicians in Mexico claimed 'lost' Fast and Furious guns killed more than 150 Mexicans.

A newly released Fortune investigative report (details below and in timeline) took pains to lay out that the fallout was actually a rush to judgment, that the ATF had to allow "gun walking" because straw purchasing is not illegal in Arizona, and that they didn't lose track of hundreds of weapons. Two of the guns that were involved in the shootout, Fortune alleges, a result of a rogue undercover sting that was outside Operation Fast and Furious ? although that sting had been approved by an ATF supervisor.

[Related: Operation Fast and Furious timeline]

Historical contempt Eric Holder (J. Scott Applewhite/AP)

The investigation and Holder's liability: A congressional committee, led by Rep. Darryl Issa, in its 18-month investigation has so far compiled 7,600 documents but wants emails from after the operation shut down in February 2011. U.S. attorney general Eric Holder cited confidentiality, and President Obama, for the first time, asserted executive privilege to back him up. (Bill Clinton claimed the privilege 14 times in his two terms, George W. Bush six.) House Speaker John Boehner claimed that privilege meant involvement, although Issa rebutted that. However, Issa led another first: a House contempt charge against a sitting U.S. attorney general.

This is not the first time this oversight committee has issued a contempt charge, points out Todd Peterson, a law professor at George Washington University, to Yahoo!. Attorney General Janet Reno was on the receiving end of one during a prolonged campaign finance investigation. Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten and Harriet Miers, who had already resigned as White House counsel, felt the sting of a House charge for contempt, for their refusal to testify in the firings of seven attorney generals. At that time, President George W. Bush had claimed absolute executive privilege.

What is unusual in this case, Peterson says, "is the speed that the full House has proceeded with the contempt vote, notwithstanding the Justice Department's willingness to continue to negotiate."

Rush to judgment: One day before the House passed H.Res. 711 against Holder, Fortune magazine reporter Katherine Erbe released the highlights of her own six-month investigation. The current understanding of Operation Fast and Furious has been "misconstrued, incorrect," Erbe said to CNN, and part of that might be due to the Justice Department's own poor internal communications.

So there's a sense that the Justice Department immediately wanted to deal with the potential political repercussions without necessarily grappling with the substantive question of what actually happened. Now I think they would say that they have turned to the inspector general to do a thorough investigation and they are withholding judgment pending the?that review. But, in fact, I think anyone watching Eric Holder testifying would conclude that he believes that guns were walked [even when they weren't]. (June 28, CNN)

Some takeaways from Erbe's report: No federal statute outlaws firearm trafficking, which hampered the ATF?already in leaderless disarray?from the start. The Sinoloa drug cartel used Phoenix as its "gun supermarket":? The National Rifle Association notes that the state doesn't require purchase permits, registration, or licensing. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has scored Arizona 0 out of 100 in its Curb Firearm Trafficking scorecard.

According to government figures, Arizona also has the sixth highest percentage of crime guns recovered that were originally purchased within the state. (Handguncontrol.org)

A disgruntled ATF agent?described by a former partner and best man at his wedding as an "a--hole"?seems to have set up an undercover case separate from Fast and Furious, then later went on CBS blaming his supervisors for gun walking. The idea of a wiretap, to make a direct link between purchases for criminals, came from an assistant attorney general in Phoenix. Even so, prosecutors were inexplicably slow to issue indictments for suspected gun traffickers?especially compared with New York and Los Angeles?until Terry's murder. Notably, since Congress' investigation began, "gun seizures by Group VII and the ATF's three other groups in Phoenix dropped by more than 90%."

Democrats walk-out during contempt vote (Jacquelyn Martin/AP)

Political poker: second Amendment, race: Pick your wild card. While the congressional investigation has been widely seen as legitimate, accusations of underlying motives of the partisanship have ranged from racism to Second Amendment conspiracies.

Holder does have a track record of favoring gun-control measures, and firearm forums repost of his post-9/11 Washington Post editorial advocates background checks on sellers and a law allowing ATF a "record of every firearm sale."? Fears of gun control have caused gun sales to soar during Obama's term. The White House administration, however, has proposed no legislation on gun control, even after the spree killing and assassination attempt of Gabrielle Gifford.

What's next: After a contempt charge, the case can be referred to the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, who has the option of bringing it to the grand jury. But the Office of Legal Counsel ruled back in 1984 that it wouldn't be constitutional to prosecute someone asserting a claim of executive privilege, points out Professor Peterson.

Congress could proceed with a civil suit, but usually judges prefer to let Congress and the Department of Justice negotiate a settlement. "There are a million different ways" to settle this, Peterson says, whether deciding if copies can be made or if House members have to hang out at Justice to look at primary material. "These kinds of disputes come up all the time, and they're almost always negotiated."

Ultimately, even though the Congress has a bad track record in keeping confidential information secret, it will likely get what it wants, as the Washington Post points out.

No doubt a lot of congressional investigations are partisan fishing expeditions. For better or worse, that comes with the democratic territory. Absent very strong countervailing considerations?stronger than some of those the administration has asserted in this case?Congress is generally entitled to disclosure. (June 21, Washington Post)

Here's who should be on college football's playoff selection panel (Hicks)

Those who always hated the polls and their place in determining the teams in the BCS national championship game will be happy to know their days are numbered.

With the official movement to a four-team playoff in 2014, the polls no longer will play a part in deciding the matchup.

Now the bad news: A selection committee will make that call. Look on the bright side: At least when you're not happy, you can cuss out the committee or its members and might actually be heard. That wasn't possible with a poll or those wacky, number-crunching computers.

So who should be on the committee? And how many should be on it?

I would select one former coach from each of the 11 conferences and a representative of the independents. Then, I would add five who are not coaches but have a strong association with college football. A 17-person committee would ensure several viewpoints, and the odd number would prevent tie votes.

It's one man's opinion, but consider these candidates: For the five open positions, candidates should have done more than just played the game, but also enjoyed success off the field. For those reasons and others, my choices for those slots would be Archie Manning, Keith Jackson, Grant Teaff, Gene Washington and Roger Staubach.

Manning continues to play a part in the game. Jackson is someone who has a great history in the game and knows its history. Teaff, as a former executive director of the College Football Coaches Association, would be a good fit. Washington, inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in the Class of 2011, is also a successful (yet retired) businessman. Staubach offers positives on several fronts.

So what of the former-coach candidates? Here are some suggestions:

SEC: Vince Dooley. As a long-time coach and former athletics director, the Mobile native would bring a lot to the table.

ACC: Bobby Bowden seems an obvious choice. One of the all-time winningest coaches, the recently retired Bowden knows the game and what it means to play for titles.

Big 12: May get some argument here, but Gene Stallings, who attended and coached at Texas A&M, would be a good pick.

Big East: Dick MacPherson, the former Syracuse coach, has a long career at a high level of success.

Big Ten: There are a few possibilities here, but former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr might be the right pick.

Pac 12: Former USC coach John Robinson seems an obvious selection.

Mountain West: Former Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry would bring a strong voice to the group.

Mid-American: How about Don Nehlen, who coached and played at Bowling Green?

Sun Belt: Former FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger, who spent time at other schools across the country and who won a national title, would be a strong selection.

Western Athletic: Let's go with former Fresno State coach Jim Sweeney.

Conference USA: Let's go with former Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower, who also played at USM.

Independents: Nope, not a former Notre Dame coach. I'd pick former BYU coach LaVell Edwards instead.

It's a good group with strong voices and as good a list to start with as any.

With recent complications in obtaining business financing, the use of a wider array of commercial finance resources has become an increasingly prudent tactic for business owners. It can be a daunting task to find the most effective and useful commercial financing resources. Commercial borrowers can simply use one of the leading internet search engines to locate the most appropriate business finance sites referred to in this discussion. All of the noted resources are free and available online. In this overview business owners will find some of the small business financing resources which they should review in conjunction with their efforts to obtain business loans and working capital financing.

An initial recommended resource can be found by using ?commercial mortgages and commercial loans guide? as a search phrase. Candid and practical advice about avoiding problems with small business financing and commercial mortgage loans is emphasized on this website. Articles covering other relevant commercial financing topics are included. A prime example is a special report describing what a commercial borrower can do if a bank declines their commercial mortgage loan application.

By using ?business cash advance and working capital guide? as a search phrase, a second key funding resource will be located. It will not be a surprise to learn that this site focuses on options for working capital management. A small business cash advance executive summary at this site should be helpful to many business owners. This summary report includes a list of ten problems to avoid with credit card factoring.

A third resource of general interest to small business owners will be found by searching for ?working capital help? or ?working capital journal?. Of special interest is likely to be an evaluation of predatory lenders to avoid. A comprehensive update about the many evolving changes for commercial finance programs is also provided.

Including terms like ?avoiding problems? together with descriptions such as ?working capital? and ?commercial mortgage loans? is recommended for more helpful insights about business loan reports available through internet search engines. For example, borrowers can obtain useful insights about difficulties to avoid in their business finance efforts by reviewing results found with ?avoiding problems with small business financing?.

With this approach to researching issues with business loans, there are also some suggested precautions to observe. First, there is not a viable substitute for personalized discussions between a commercial finance expert and a business owner because of the increased complexities governing business loans. Second, there will usually be specific variations from one business to another that require more detail than an article identifying general commercial loan problems can realistically provide.

However, by devoting some time to reviewing sites identified by the search phrases noted above, it is likely that business owners will gain helpful insights about the changes which are currently dominating the business finance news. While there are new small business loan problems which borrowers are likely to encounter, these difficulties can often be overcome successfully with appropriate strategies.

Fran?ois Nars Turns Snapper For Vogue Japan

Previous 1 / 10 Next

Posted on by Sarah Macrae ?

Fran?ois Nars is a man of many talents. As well as creating a beauty brand that's turned into a worldwide phenomenon?? largely down to his multi-award-winning Orgasm Blush ? and seen him able to buy his own small island in the South Pacific, he's secured a spot as Marc Jacobs go-to runway makeup artist and is a pretty ace photographer. Yep, what initially started as a passion soon turned into him shooting his own advertising campaigns (he still does to this day) and launching a photography book, X-Ray, in 1999. His striking images mean that he's regularly called upon for his skills behind the lens. His latest project is a stunning editorial spread of German model Toni Garrn in Vogue Japan. Call us biased, but we think Fran?ois' expert face painting skills allow him to take beautiful shots of makeup, no?
