Jobs report looms over Obama bus trip

SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) ? Campaigning by bus through swing state Ohio, President Barack Obama cast his re-election bid as a bet on the American worker Thursday, even as he braced for a Friday unemployment report that will help set battle lines for the hot summer to come.

The monthly unemployment numbers could alter or harden voters' views of Obama's core re-election argument that he pulled the U.S. back from recession while Republican Mitt Romney embraces policies that led to an economic near-collapse. A weak report could undermine Obama's position, while improvement could help the president ? though concerns about jobs are sure to a major issue through Election Day.

Obama tellingly chose to start his summer of on-the-road campaigning in two political battleground states that have a rosier economic outlook than some parts of the nation. Both Ohio and Pennsylvania had unemployment rates of 7.3 percent in May, well below the national average of 8.2 percent.

"This is how summer is supposed to feel," Obama said, wiping sweat from his face he campaigned under scorching sun for four more years in office.

His trip through northern Ohio gave him a post-July 4 splash of Americana: Main streets and U.S. flags, cornfields and fruit stands, community soccer sign-ups and American Legion halls, small children climbing on fathers' shoulders to see the president's bus go by. Obama was greeted kindly wherever he went and bounded through his day, high-fiving the kids and hugging grandmothers.

Romney rolled his own bus tour through six states last month, including the two Obama is visiting this week. And more are certain to come in the next few months for both candidates.

As he kicked off Thursday's 250-mile trip in Maumee, Ohio, Obama said he had "refused to turn my back on communities like this one."

Romney, chiming in from his family vacation in New Hampshire, criticized Obama for hitting the road with "no new answers" on the economy.

The president, speaking at an early 19th-century museum complex dotted with red-white-and-blue bunting and American flags, claimed credit for Ohio's improving economy, especially its rejuvenated automobile industry. The White House said the Obama-backed auto bailout helped dramatically increase sales of Chrysler's Jeep Wrangler and Liberty, made in nearby Toledo.

Obama said Ohio's economic gains could be replicated nationwide.

"There are some folks who are betting that you will lose interest, that are betting that somehow you are going to lose heart," Obama said. "I'm betting you're not going to lose interest. I'm betting you're not going to lose heart. I still believe on you, I'm betting on you."

In an economic appeal to working class voters, the president also announced his administration was launching an unfair trade complaint against China with the World Trade Organization. The complaint centers on new Chinese duties on American-made cars that the U.S. contends violate international trade rules.

As his day of campaigning stretched into dusk, Obama took a fresh shot at Romney on taxes, saying the Republican's plan would cut taxes for the wealthy at the expense of education spending and health care for the elderly.

"I don't need a tax cut. Mr. Romney sure doesn't need a tax cut," Obama said in Parma.

And Obama defended his health care overhaul during his first campaign appearance since the law was upheld by the Supreme Court.

"The law I passed is here to stay," he said. "It is going to make the vast majority of Americans more secure."

Romney has vowed to repeal the health care overhaul if elected, and Republicans believe that position can be a winning one. But much of the attention since the ruling last week has been on debate within the party over whether the law's insurance mandate is a tax or a penalty. A tax, Romney said Wednesday, contradicting an adviser's comments of a few days earlier.

Friday's jobs report was on many minds, too. Obama aides have been anxiously awaiting the new numbers, which follow a dismal May report that showed an uptick in the unemployment rate to 8.2 percent and raised concerns about a further economic slowdown.

The latest economic indicators have been mixed. U.S. manufacturing shrank in June for the first time in nearly three years, according to a report this week. Private payroll provider ADP reported Thursday that U.S. businesses added 176,000 jobs last month, better than the revised total of 136,000 jobs it reported for May. But shoppers pulled back on spending in June, leading to sluggish retail sales during the month.

Obama already faces an uphill battle convincing some voters he is the right steward for the economy. An Associated Press-GfK poll released last month found that more than half of those surveyed, 52 percent, disapproved of his handling of unemployment, compared with 45 percent who approved.

Some Ohio voters said the auto bailout was still a plus for Obama. "The bailout will certainly help him. It's definitely working," said Linda Schneider of Maumee.

But Thomas Hutton of Toledo said it the bailout would not be a defining campaign issue. "It's a side issue. The big ones are the economy and health care," he said.

Republicans dispatched former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, two potential vice presidential nominees, to counter Obama's appeal to voters in some of the same towns where the president was stopping.

"We should all bet on the country, but we shouldn't double down on Barack Obama," Pawlenty said Thursday. "He's had his chance. It's not working. And we need to get it moving in a different direction."

Ohio Republican Sen. Rob Portman, yet another potential Romney running mate, wrote a column in an Ohio newspaper Thursday accusing Obama of implementing policies that "make it harder, not easier, to create jobs here in Ohio and around the country."

The bus trip marked a new phase of Obama's re-election campaign as he takes a more retail-oriented approach before the September Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C. Among his events in Ohio Thursday was an ice cream social in Sandusky and remarks in a park in Parma, a suburb of Cleveland.

Obama, dressed casually in a short-sleeved shirt and khaki pants, sprinkled his campaign speeches with personal references, telling the crowd about his oldest daughter Malia's 14th birthday and promising his popular wife Michelle Obama would come see them in Ohio soon.

As Obama made his way from Maumee to Sandusky, Ohio, he made an unannounced stop at Kozy Corners, a diner in the town of Oak Harbor, where he greeted the lunchtime crowd. He bought fruit at a roadside stand along the shores of Lake Erie, where he picked up a dozen ears of corn, plus some peaches and cherries. And he drank a beer at a bar in Amherst and chatted with patrons.

Obama also sought to extend the reach of his bus tour by taping interviews with six Ohio TV stations.

Friday's schedule includes a stop at an elementary school in Poland, Ohio, near Youngstown, followed by a speech at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Recent polls by Quinnipiac University found that Obama held a 9-percentage-point lead over Romney in Ohio and a 6-point lead in Pennsylvania. Obama won both states in the 2008 election.

Bringing Home Ezra: Photos from the kiddos carnival birthday party

Unfortunately for all of my planning and preparations the morning of the party was still really hectic. I greatly underestimated how much room over 100 balloons would take up in my car not including the 6 jumbo balloons I purchased so I had to make a couple trips to the store to pick them up which ate up a chunk of time. Because I was running behind unfortunately I didn't get to take photos of everything but here's what I did get of the party.

Michael obliged me and served as my "vendor". He had all the hotdogs, peanuts, cotton candy, and PB&J sandwiches.

Here is my brother Weston taking his turn at vending some of the goodies!

This is what the inside of the box looked like.? I bought some sandwich wrapping paper in red and white checks then used Gartner studios pre-cut printable scalloped sticker templates to print the "peanut butter and jelly sandwich" labels onto.? I also purchased vintage looking hot dog and peanut bags online and created my own little "cotton candy" labels and just stapled them onto ziplock baggies of cotton candy.? The template for these can be found in a prior post.

I wish I had a better photo of the dessert booth, but basically I used my antique hutch as a backdrop and just added fabric for the awning and backed the shelves with red and white striped wrapping paper.?

I didn't have enought time to created the banner topper I wanted to make for the cake but fortunately the bakery who made the cake had included some fondant spirals so it didn't look too bare.

With little time to lose I quickly lined the walkway to the house with ballons.

There were multiple "booths" set up with games and the prize table was centered under the tent.

I made little treat bags which were on the prize table so the kiddos could put all their goodies in there and the parents weren't left holding armfulls of prizes.? All signage seen here can be downloaded and printed out in previous posts.

I created a little accordianed photo gallery of Libby and Ezra and placed that at the top of the hutch which was bordered by some rainbow jello shooters.? I wish I had a better image of that but alas I didn't get one before people started arriving.

My Father in law made this super cute lemonade stand for me.

The first shock, a teenager?s mysterious death while in a juvenile detention center, is joined by more revelations.

Kathia Casseus, a seemingly healthy 16-year-old, died while in Jackson County Family Court?s juvenile detention center in February.Now, it?s questionable if she should have been sent there.Kathia complained of heart palpitations and shortness of breath for several days before dying of blood clotting in her lungs. She?d been put on a birth control patch, without her mother?s knowledge, while in custody.The contraceptives are alleged to have contributed to her death, according to a wrongful death lawsuit.Kathia?s school records, obtained by attorneys for the family, open up even more unanswered questions.Kathia?s functional IQ was 68, which means she falls within an intellectually disabled range.Now it?s questionable if her outbursts, the cussing, the erratic decision-making were symptoms solely of juvenile delinquency ? or were her problems complicated by developmental difficulties?Consider the recklessness that led to her being placed with juvenile authorities. Kathia took her mother?s car for a joyride. She slammed into a long carport, causing it to fall, damaging multiple vehicles.Kathia never had driven. She had no license.The stunt got her an eight-month sentence. Harsh, for sure. Questionably strict, now that her mental capacity is known.Kathia had no prior juvenile records, according to her mother and attorneys.Inactivity while in the youth facilities may have contributed to her death, according to the medical examiner?s report. A detention staffer reported joking with Kathia about her weight gain, trying to encourage more exercise.Staffers at the center also described Kathia?s outbursts to sheriff?s detectives investigating the death. They said she acted out if confronted, threw temper tantrums, screamed and cussed, even as she complained of feeling sick, records show.One staffer surmised that Kathia?s behavior was that of a person who had trouble communicating what she really needed. It?s unclear if she knew of Kathia?s lower mental capacity.The staffer also told a detective that she was unsure of protocol in calling emergency help when the center?s nurse didn?t immediately answer a voicemail about Kathia feeling ill.The girl?s mother, Nesly Destil, said she assumed until too late that her daughter was being treated appropriately. She was OK with Kathia being held for a long punishment after the car incident, believing authorities might be able to get her daughter under control.Destil is a single parent, raising two other children. She?s a Haitian immigrant who has lived in Kansas City about 10 years, relocating from New York.?I wanted her somewhere safe,? she said.

Spire Rock
Visible from any part of the city, Spire Rock is a jagged peak that towers over Arcadia. It would be nearly impossible to scale without the use of magic, and as a result was once used as a fortress during the Magical Revolution. On one side of Spire Rock sits the Seelie, a palace made of twisting branches and trees, home of the Fae and Elven Court. On the other face of the rock is the handsome, coloured brick structure of the Wizards' Tower, the city's centre of magical training and study. Both occupy a close space, though neither like to acknowledge one another.

Anaon

Wound within a grove of great trees, Anaon is the district that serves as home to most of the elves, fae, and other high ranking citizens who have a strong connection to nature. Dryads inhabit many of the trees there, and shapeshifters often choose to make their homes there, finding it a comfortable medium between the city streets and the untamed wilderness. The dryads maintain Anaon much of the time, and so few humans are permitted to enter, unless they are thralls for the residents.

Elysium
One of the shopping districts, considered the 'classier' alternative to the Goblin Market. Many mages run potion shops or vend golems and constructs out to citizens. All the most skilled weapon and armor crafters tend to set up shop in Elysium. In general they merchants there avoid the more shady trades such as slaves, preferring to maintain a respectable image in comparison to their more chaotic sister district.

Tower Gardens

In the shadow of the Wizards' Tower, Tower Gardens is an area mostly reserved for magic users who are members of the Tower. It is green and pleasant, though unlike the wilds of Anaon it is immaculately maintained, with flower beds full of strangely coloured flowers, and topiary hedges magicked into imitating the animals they were shaped as. Peacocks and phoenixes roam the lawns, and statues bow as the residents pass. Many humans and golems are used to help maintain the gardens, with magic users doing their best to avoid menial work.

Temple District

The Temple District contains various temples to the wild assortment of gods, spirits, and deities worshipped by the residents of Arcadia. Towering marble temples with hundreds of burning torches stand next to jagged shrines adorned with ribbons and animal bones. The district is often busy with folks leaving offerings for good luck or in thanks.

Bright District

Bright District is named because of the vividly coloured stone that makes up the buildings. Many of the craftsmen fro Elysium live there, as well as any of the Low Fae or monster types that've done well in the world. Bright is thought of as one of the 'respectable' areas, being on the north side of the river, though being so close to the Wylds, they often have....unpleasant things stalking their streets at night. As a result, many have moved to the Old Quarter for safety.

The Docks

The import/export hub of Arcadia. As well as being for the loading and unloading of goods, it is also often where people go to secure transport in and out of Arcadia. It invariably busy, and all sorts of walks of life work there. Many humans are employed in the loading and unloading.

The Old Quarter

Another primarily residential district, The Old Quarter is built around the ruins of the old human city that once stood there. From time to time, remnants of the dark past and the violent end of the human city can be seen, with the silhouettes of long-dead folk scorched onto walls by dragonfire. Even so, it is a very popular district for people to live in, with houses being quite cheap.

The Goblin Market

Without doubt, the trading hub of Arcadia. While Elysium is far prettier, it is the Goblin Market that the majority of the city goes to when they want something. It is said that you can get nearly anything you desire in The Market....if you can afford the price. You see, the Goblin Market is an amazing place, with brightly coloured stalls, constant noise and bustle, and amazing merchandise on display...but it has an undeniably dark side.
First of all is the food. The food on sale at the market appears incredibly enticing. Decorated cakes and pastries, fruit of unnatural size and hue, spiced meat and herby bread, and all sorts of dishes cooking in huge pans set upon the stalls. All over the market it's possible to see creatures enjoying it...but humans had better not dare to partake. Goblin Market food has a far more sinister effect on human folk. It acts almost like a drug, having a distinctly narcotic effect and inducing a sense of eurphoria....it's also highly addictive. Humans that consume food or drink from the market will feel desperately compelled to seek it out again...even if they can't afford it...which often leads to the second sinister thing about the Market.

The gold coin is the official currency of the Market...legally they should not trade in anything else...but many of the stallholders will give up their goods in exchange for other...more esoteric things. Memories, ideas, dreams and hopes..even one's own life force...all of them can be offered up as trade. Some folks can play the system, haggling with traders so that they take bad memories from them in a trade that benefits both of them...but the downtrodden and desperate can end up losing themselves in exchange for goods or coins...ending up as nothing but shadows with no memory or personality.

A section of the market is given over for the sale of slaves, comprised mostly of humans...or magical folks responsible for serious crimes that caused them to lose their free status.

Twisted Streets

Twisted streets is an area that is easy to get lost in...mainly as the streets tend to re-order themselves of their own accord. They will swap places most nights, making the already rather confusing place. As a result, the Twisted Streets are an almost lawless place inhabited by some of the shadiest residents of Arcadia. Thieves, smuggler, assassins and murderers make their homes their to avoid capture. Few folks venture into the district without a weapon or a guard.

The Warren

An odd spire of rock protruding from the ground on the southside is honeycombed with jagged fissures and caves that mark the entrance to The Warrens, the confusing underground maze of caverns and catacombs that runs under the city. Some of it is used by organizations like The Lanterners and the ruling groups as dungeons and store rooms, much of it is left wild and abandoned, infested with strange creatures. Beings like kobolds, who dislike living above ground, build their homes down there.

The Wylds

Supposedly having stood there for thousands of years, before even humans settled there, The Wylds is an ancient and dangerous wilderness that much of the city's nature magic draws power from. The trees are unnaturally dense and sturdy, incredibly hard to cut down...not that many would dare take an axe to them.

The most feral creature of Arcadia dwell out in The Wylds. Satyrs, fauns, wild elves, dryads, werecreatures and animal-folk often choose to dwell out there rather than inside the city, and only venture into Arcadia when they need to.

While it is considered part of the city, The Wylds is also very dangerous, being filled with very dangerous wildlife...and plantlife. It is not advised for those not well versed in nature to go wandering around there..lest they end up as food.

The Wylds are fiercely contested. The Circle of Teeth like to use it as a hunting ground, though many of the nature-loving beings are disgusted by the barbaric practice, wishing it to end, and for hunting to only take place out of necessity. As a result, fights frequently break out in the woodland.
