A diamond bigger than Earth?

LONDON (Reuters) - Forget the diamond as big as the Ritz. This one's bigger than planet Earth.

Orbiting a star that is visible to the naked eye, astronomers have discovered a planet twice the size of our own made largely out of diamond.

The rocky planet, called '55 Cancri e', orbits a sun-like star in the constellation of Cancer and is moving so fast that a year there lasts a mere 18 hours.

Discovered by a U.S.-Franco research team, its radius is twice that of Earth's but it is much more dense with a mass eight times greater. It is also incredibly hot, with temperatures on its surface reaching 3,900 degrees Fahrenheit (1,648 Celsius).

"The surface of this planet is likely covered in graphite and diamond rather than water and granite," said Nikku Madhusudhan, the Yale researcher whose findings are due to be published in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The study - with Olivier Mousis at the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planetologie in Toulouse, France - estimates that at least a third of the planet's mass, the equivalent of about three Earth masses, could be diamond.

Diamond planets have been spotted before but this is the first time one has been seen orbiting a sun-like star and studied in such detail.

"This is our first glimpse of a rocky world with a fundamentally different chemistry from Earth," Madhusudhan said, adding that the discovery of the carbon-rich planet meant distant rocky planets could no longer be assumed to have chemical constituents, interiors, atmospheres, or biologies similar to Earth.

David Spergel, an astronomer at Princeton University, said it was relatively simple to work out the basic structure and history of a star once you know its mass and age.

"Planets are much more complex. This 'diamond-rich super-Earth' is likely just one example of the rich sets of discoveries that await us as we begin to explore planets around nearby stars."

"Nearby" is a relative concept in astronomy. Any fortune-hunter not dissuaded by "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz", F.Scott Fitzgerald's jazz age morality tale of thwarted greed, will find Cancri e about 40 light years, or 230 trillion miles, from Park Avenue.

Mars rover studies rock that's a true curiosity

A rock on Mars being studied by NASA's Curiosity rover is unlike any Martian stone ever seen, and is surprisingly similar to an unusual, but well-known, kind of rock on Earth.

This type of rock is the first of its kind encountered on Mars and is helping broaden scientists' understanding of how igneous rocks form, scientists said Thursday. The rock, named "Jake Matijevic" in honor of a Curiosity mission team member who died in August, is a 16-inch-tall (40-centimeter-tall) pyramid-shape specimen that Curiosity encountered at its landing spot in Mars' Gale Crater.

Curiosity, the centerpiece of the $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory Mission, touched down on the Red Planet Aug. 5 to learn whether Mars ever had the conditions necessary to support life.

The Jake rock is being used as a calibration target for Curiosity to try out its suite of 10 science instruments on. "It was the first good-sized rock that we found along the way," Roger Wiens, principal investigator for Curiosity's ChemCam instrument at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, said Thursday during a press conference. [Amazing Mars Rover Curiosity Views (Latest Photos)]

Not like other rocks
In late September Curiosity used ChemCam and its Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) to probe Jake's chemical composition. What they found was surprising.

"The spectrum that we're seeing was not what I expected," said APXS principal investigator Ralf Gellert of Canada's University of Guelph. "It seems to be a new type of rock that we've discovered on Mars" that wasn't seen by NASA's previous Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity.

Jake appears to have higher concentrations of elements such as sodium, aluminum and potassium, and lower concentrations of magnesium, iron and nickel, than other igneous rocks studied on Mars.

While previously unknown on Mars, this type of chemical composition is seen in a rare but well-studied class of rocks on Earth. On Earth, such specimens are found on oceanic islands such as Hawaii and in other places. They are thought to form when interior rocks melt to form magma, which then rises toward the surface. As it rises, it cools, and parts of the material crystalize, preferentially selecting some elements while leaving a remainder of liquid magma that is enriched with the left-behind chemicals.

However, the researchers said it's too soon to know whether the Jake rock formed this same way.

"This is based on one rock and one has to be careful not to extrapolate," said Edward Stolper, provost of Caltech and co-investigator on Curiosity's science team. "You have to wait and see if we find others and if relationships among them give us clues into the processes."

Ultimately, this rock is deepening scientists' understanding of the types of geology present on Mars, and could reveal new formation processes for known types of rocks.

"There is a richness in the igneous story that's not surprising," Stolper told Space.com. "The more you look, the more you find different things happened."

Mysterious shiny object
Curiosity is about 65 days into its mission, and still testing out all of its equipment.

The rover used its scoop tool to dig up Martian dirt for the first time earlier this week, and scientists saw a strange shiny object in photos of the scooped material. The find put a temporary halt on scooping activities while mission managers investigated the object.

Scientists have since concluded that it is most likely a bit of plastic from the rover itself or its descent stage that came loose and eventually fell onto the ground.

"The main thing here is, we scoured the rover and it's completely inconsequential to the rover's function," said Chris Roumeliotis, lead turret rover planner for Curiosity at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, Calif., where Curiosity's mission control is based. "It's likely from EDL [entry, descent and landing], and there is absolutely no issue."

Mission team members will continue investigating the debris, but they think it might be a piece of resistive heating material from the rover's exterior that was attached with adhesive, which might have come unstuck.

Greatest areas of stress for business travellers - road warriors - Tnooz

Oh those precious corporate travellers with their gripes about business lounges being full of normal folk these days and the wine not chilled enough when they turn left on entering an aircraft.

Not really.

But Carlson Wagonlit Travel has taken a look at what REALLY annoys business travellers when they hit the road, speaking to 6,000 regular jet-setters from nine global companies.

The study asked travellers to rank 33 co-called stress factors that can occur at different stages of a journey according to how much it winds them up.

It discovered there are basically three categories of stress associated with business travel: incidents which break a routine; surprises; and when time is lost.

Alongside pulling together the list of top worries, CWT found:

  • Stress increases with age and the frequency of travel (perhaps not to surprising there)
  • Women are generally more stressed out than men
  • Top execs are generally more stressed out (probably not entirely travel-related)
  • North Americans have higher stress levels than those from other countries when faced with a language they do not know

So here, in order of greatest stress triggers (look out for the tech, web and distribution-related anxieties):

  1. Lost or delayed baggage
  2. Poor/no internet connection
  3. Flying economy on medium and long haul
  4. Delays
  5. Inconvenient departure/arrival times
  6. Low hotel category
  7. Inconvenient hotel location
  8. Last-minute requested trips
  9. Not able to eat healthily
  10. Travelling during weekends
  11. Length of journey to reach destination
  12. Flying indirect versus direct
  13. Required visa application
  14. Not able to maintain workout routine
  15. Getting through customs and security
  16. New language at destination
  17. Using restricted fares
  18. Reimbursement
  19. Geopolitical context at destination
  20. Long stays (+3 nights)
  21. Flying to a new destination
  22. Working long hours at destination
  23. Different time zone (jetlag)
  24. Getting to the airport/station
  25. Immigration control at destination
  26. Flying a non-preferred airline
  27. Using an online booking tool
  28. Carrying cash
  29. Flying economy on short haul
  30. Renting a car
  31. Contacting a travel agent
  32. Taking a taxi
  33. Fear of flying

The importance of reliable internet access is paramount again, although some maybe be surprised that passing through customs and security did not feature higher than 15th spot.

Fear of flying? Shouldn?t have accepted the promotion there?

Second skydive bid postponed

Austrian adventurer Felix Baumgartner has decided against a second attempt to make the highest ever skydive on Thursday.

Gusty winds at Roswell, New Mexico, have prevented the launch of the helium balloon that was to take him to more than 120,000ft (36.5km).

His meteorologist has now ruled out a Thursday jump, and the team will hold a briefing to talk about next steps.

Baumgartner is trying to topple records that have stood for more than 50 years.

The previous highest skydive was made by retired US Air Force Col Joe Kittinger, who leapt from a helium envelope in 1960. His altitude was 102,800ft (31.3km).

What he is trying to do is extremely dangerous.

At an altitude of 120,000ft (36.5km), the air pressure is less than 2% of what it is at sea level, and it is impossible to breathe without an oxygen supply.

Others who have tried to break the records for the highest, fastest and longest freefalls have lost their lives in the process.

accounting software - UK Business Forums

Why pay hundreds for Sage payroll when you can get a far superior program from Moneysoft for ?60. Integration with accounts isn't a big issue - you can set up a simple "journal" to enter every payday to put the payroll figures in the right place. As for Sage accounts, again, why pay so much. You can get software far cheaper that is probably sufficient, such as VT, Quickbooks, or online such as Kashflow, Xero, etc. Please don't go down the Sage route just because you know it - things have moved on greatly over recent years and Sage looks more and more like an expensive dinosaur.
