NJ Non-Profits, Community Leaders and Organizations Making a Difference

PRLog (Press Release) - Dec. 28, 2012 - As we close out the year, mybergen.com takes a moment to recognize some of the people, organizations and events that have made life a little bit better for all of us in 2013.

Over 1,200 "Go the Distance for Autism" and Raise Nearly $1,000,000
Autism affects approximately 1 in 88 individuals nationwide each year. In New Jersey, this figure increases to 1 in 49. Four northern NJ schools that serve individuals with autism are putting up some impressive numbers in an effort to combat these staggering figures.

On Sunday, May 6, 2012, more than 1,200 cyclists, families, volunteers, donors and sponsors attended the third annual Go the Distance for Autism Bike Event at Bergen Community College. Riders of all ages cycled more than 15,000 miles and raised nearly $1,000,000 to support the educational programs for children and adults with autism at Alpine Learning Group, The EPIC School, Garden Academy and REED Academy.

?Through this wonderful and generous community of parents, teachers, staff, families, friends, and sponsors, the 2012 Go the Distance for Autism Bike Event was a great success and we have made significant progress towards our goals of helping our schools and the cause of autism awareness. We are ever so grateful to everyone who has given of their time, their labor and their resources in support of this cause,? said Barbara Strate, whose daughter attends the EPIC School in Paramus.

"We are truly humbled by the generosity of our families and the community at large," said Dr. Bridget Taylor, Founder and Executive Director of Alpine Learning Group. "To be close to a million dollars in our third year is a testament to the power of partnerships and a clear and well-articulated message: get involved and together we will make a difference in the lives of hundreds of individuals with autism and their families," continued Dr. Taylor.

Local and national companies came out in support of the event including Premier Sponsors Gibson Dunn Crutcher LLP, North Bergen Brain & Spine, Paul Weiss, Ramsey Auto Group, Simpson Thatcher, TD Bank and Weight Watchers.

?The 2012 Go the Distance For Autism was an incredible day and we are extremely grateful to our sponsors, families, donors, staff and Board of Directors for their determination to raise money for autism and to build awareness for autism in our community,? explained Jill Nadison, Director of Development at REED Academy.

?The four partnering schools have put incredible effort and passion behind this event which makes it the overwhelming success it is,? stated Devon Trabilsy, Development Coordinator at Garden Academy. Click here for more: http://www.mybergen.com/content/over-1200-go-distance-aut...

Wells Mountain Foundation
Wells Mountain Foundation, based in Bergen County, New Jersey, was founded in 2005 to provide funding and support in the areas of education, literacy and the arts, primarily in the developing world.

Wells Mountain Foundation (WMF) provides support to individuals and families in need of assistance as a result of economic challenges, and in particular, extreme poverty. WMF is 501(c)(3) non-profit and all donations are fully tax deductible.

The WMF Empowerment through Education Scholarship Program has grown from just one scholarship in Ghana in 2005 to 52 WMF Scholars in 2012. WMF scholars hail from over a dozen countries, including Senegal, Ghana, Haiti, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Gambia, Nepal, Rwanda, Sudan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Liberia. Eighteen new 2012 WMF Scholars were chosen from over 1600 applications in August of 2012.

The WMF Literacy Program provides books to libraries and programs in Haiti, Ghana, and Nepal. Generally, books are supplied by WMF at no cost. For other non-profit organizations, they offer their services and experience in purchasing and delivering books, sometimes with the organizations only paying for the wholesale cost of the books.

In the area of the arts, the organization has provided art supplies and support in Nepal and Ghana, and this year in Uganda and Kenya.

Because of their affiliation with the YMCA d?Haiti, this year WMF undertook a major program of support after the January 12, 2010 Haiti earthquake. They organized a massive clothing drive with the help of donors, volunteers, and companies here in the United States and ultimately shipped to Haiti twelve containers of clothing and supplies. WMF also raised enough money to purchase the containers, and the materials necessary to convert the containers into YMCA buildings after they are emptied. Bake Better Chocolate Chip Cookies by Using Chocolate Bars Instead of Chips

Bake Better Chocolate Chip Cookies by Using Chocolate Bars Instead of ChipsThe (very worthwhile) hunt for the perfect chocolate chip cookie has yielded thousands of cookie recipes. The next time you bake a batch, try out this simple tip: instead of chocolate chips or chunks, chop up a baking bar for more flavorful and better-looking cookies.

Leslie Beslie offers this tip on her blog, saying that the chopped chocolate will be more evenly distributed in the cookie, and adding all the little slivers makes the cookies look amazing. (That's her cookies photo up above.) She suggests using a good quality semi-sweet chocolate bar.

Serious Eats did a taste test pitting chips, chunks, and chopped bits against each other and scientifically concluded the same thing.

Chopping up bars is an extra step, but one that you'll appreciate when it comes time to dig into those cookies.

Check out Leslie's post for more cookie perfection tips.

Number of e-book readers increasing in United States: survey

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The popularity of electronic books is increasing in the United States, with nearly one-quarter of American bibliophiles reading e-books, according to a survey released on Thursday.

The number of e-readers aged 16 years and older jumped from 16 percent in 2011 to 23 percent this year, while print readers fell from 72 to 67 percent in 2012, in a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center.

"The move toward e-book reading coincides with an increase in ownership of electronic book reading devices," the organization said. Its report analyzed reading trends among the 75 percent of Americans who read at least one book in the last year.

"In all, the number of owners of either a tablet computer or e-book reading device ... grew from 18 percent in late 2011 to 33 percent in 2012."

E-book owners increased from 4 percent in May 2010 to 19 percent in November 2012, while people with tablets jumped from 3 percent to 25 percent during the same period, according to the report.

People most likely to read e-books are well-educated, 30- to 49-year-olds who live in households earning $75,000 or more.

More women, 81 percent, read books, compared to 70 percent of men, and the number of readers declines as people age. The trend toward e-books impacted libraries, which stocked and loaned more e-books.

"The share of recent library users who have borrowed an e-book from a library has increased from 3 percent last year to 5 percent this year," according to Pew.

Even awareness that library stock e-books has grown, from 24 percent late last year to 31 percent now.

The findings were based on a telephone survey of 2,252 people, aged 16 years and older, across the United States and a similar poll the year before. It had a 2.7 percent margin of error.

Pakistan's 'dynastic politics': Bhutto's son launches career

Reuters

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, son of assassinated former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto, makes a speech to launch his political career during the fifth anniversary of his mother's death on Thursday.

By Munir Ahmed and Sebastian Abbot, The Associated Press

?

The 24-year-old son of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto launched his political career Thursday with a fiery speech before thousands of cheering supporters observing the fifth anniversary of his mother's assassination.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's speech comes several months before national elections are expected to be held. He is too young to participate in the elections himself ? the minimum age is 25 ? but is likely to be a key asset for the ruling Pakistan People's Party. The party's popularity has plummeted since it took power nearly five years ago as the country has struggled with a weak economy and bloody Taliban insurgency.

Before dawn on the same day, dozens of militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons attacked two tribal police posts in Pakistan's northwest, killing two policemen, officials said. Twenty-one other policemen are missing and presumed kidnapped.

?

Zardari was made chairman of the Pakistan People's Party after his mother's death but has mainly played a background role until now while he completed his studies at Oxford University in Britain.

"I want to tell you that thanks to God he has completed his studies, but now is the time of his training," his father, President Asif Ali Zardari, told the crowd of supporters Thursday in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh village in southern Sindh province, site of the Bhutto family mausoleum. "He has to study Pakistan, he has to learn from you and he has to work according to your thinking."

Pakistani supporters gather outside the Bhutto family mausoleum in Garhi Dera Bakhsh on Thursday. More than 200,000 people gathered for the occasion, the fifth anniversary of the assassination of former Pakistan premier Benazir Bhutto.

The Bhutto family has played a prominent role in Pakistani politics for much of the country's 65-year history. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's grandfather, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founded the Pakistan People's Party and served as both the country's president and prime minister in the 1970s. He was eventually hanged in 1979 after Gen. Zia ul-Haq seized power in a military coup.

Benazir Bhutto twice served as prime minister in the 1980s and 1990s but never completed a full term. Her governments were dismissed both times under the cloud of corruption allegations by presidents who were close to the country's powerful army. She was killed in a gun and suicide bomb attack on Dec. 27, 2007, shortly after returning from self-imposed exile to participate in national elections.

After her death, the Pakistan People's Party rode a wave of public sympathy to garner the most seats in the 2008 elections, and Asif Ali Zardari was elected president. But the popularity of both the party and the president has fallen significantly since then as the government has failed to address pressing problems, such as Pakistan's shortage of electricity and stuttering economy. The government has also struggled in its fight against the Pakistani Taliban, who have killed thousands of people in attacks throughout the country.

Rasul Bakhsh Rais, a political science professor at Lahore University of Management Sciences, said it was not a surprise that the Pakistan People's Party unveiled Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in an attempt to boost its fortunes in the upcoming elections, which are expected by June at the latest.

"This is Pakistan and dynastic politics is the norm," said Rais. "Bilawal is perhaps the only card left in the chest of the Pakistan People's Party."

Both Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and his father sought to whip up the emotions of the crowd Thursday by shouting "Long live Bhutto" and "Bhutto is alive." Many of the supporters waved the red, black and green flag of the Pakistan People's Party and held pictures of Benazir Bhutto and her father.

"If you kill one Bhutto, one thousand more Bhuttos will emerge," said Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

He took a swipe at the judiciary, which has clashed with the current government, by asking why people arrested for suspected involvement in his mother's murder have yet to be convicted.

But some critics have questioned why Zardari has not done more to push forward the investigation during more than four years as president.

The president at the time of her death, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, blamed the Pakistani Taliban for the attack, and five suspected militants are facing trial for alleged involvement in the killing. The Pakistani Taliban have denied targeting Bhutto.

A Pakistani court issued an arrest warrant for Musharraf last year over allegations he played a role in the attack, which he has denied. Arrest warrants were also issued for two senior police officials accused of negligence in the assassination. Prosecutors accused one of the officials of failing to provide proper security for Bhutto and the other of cleaning the crime scene before evidence could be collected.

A U.N. investigation into the assassination said it could have been prevented and blamed all levels of government for failing to provide adequate security. It also accused intelligence agencies and other officials of severely hampering the investigation into those behind her murder.

The attack on the tribal police posts before dawn Thursday took place in the town of Darra Adam Khel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, government officials said. The town is located near Pakistan's tribal region, the main sanctuary for Taliban militants in the country.

Security forces have launched an operation to try to recover the 21 missing policemen, said the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but suspicion will likely fall on the Pakistani Taliban.

2012?s Biggest Marketing Break Throughs | Heidi Cohen

2012 was an evolutionary year for marketing.

Trends that had been growing outside of the main focus of social media, search and digital, moved to the center of marketing driven by the expanded offering and ownership of smartphones, tablets and other content consuming devices. (Here?s the research and charts.)

Here?s what stood out for eighteen marketing experts.

  1. 3D printing. While still in its infancy, it went from being the talk of a small subset of hobbyists to something top of mind with many of the world?s most important media outlets and brands.?David Berkowitz ??360i, @DBerkowitz
  2. Nike went from being an apparel company to a fitness technology company. Their introduction and continued rollout of Nike+ products changes the game for the entire fitness industry. Plus they are rocking on the marketing and content sides as well. C.C. Chapman,?@cc_chapman.?Author of?Amazing Things Will Happen
  3. The biggest break-through to me was the book Marketing in the Round?by Gini Dietrich and Geoff Livingston. It?s the first book I?ve read that has actively preached the importance of busting silos and integrating social media with other marketing tactics.??Marjorie Clayman ??Clayman Marketing Communications,?@MargieClayman
  4. The expanded ownership and constant use of smartphones as an always-on device and to a lesser extent tablets have created a?four-screen world where consumers are constantly taking in information from a screen, whether it?s a computer, smartphone, tablet or television. As a result, content marketing which also supports social media and search took center stage in 2012 because customers trust content, they need pre-purchase information and it?s cost-effective relative to other forms of marketing. Heidi Cohen???Riverside Marketing Strategies,?@HeidiCohen
  5. The biggest break through of 2012 was visual content. The explosion was driven by Instagram and Pinterest, but was adopted by Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn with cover photos and embedded rich media. Companies can no longer count on fans reading every word of their carefully worded copy. They need to halt the scroll and the scan with compelling visuals.?Gini Dietrich ??Arment Dietrich, Inc.,?@GiniDietrich.?Co-author of?Marketing in the Round
  6. Ever since Google Plus was launched back in 2011 the coffin-maker has been in the backyard banging together a wooden box. But most lately, we?re seeing that Google seems to have a bigger game plan in motion. ?Communities, alone, has brought people back to the platform, while at the same time, Facebook?s increased inline advertising has helped to encourage that migration.??Ric Dragon ??Dragon Search,?@RicDragon. Author of?Social Marketology
  7. Content marketing. In 2011, it was something forward-thinking brands were embracing. In 2012, content marketing became the heart of marketing.?Ann Handley???MarketingProfs, @MarketingProfs.?Co-Author with C.C. Chapman of?Content Rules
  8. The technology divide among generations continued to be blown to pieces. My proof ? the fact that I got a text message from my 83 year old mother-in-law who wanted to know how to get Angry Birds on both her iPad and iPhone.?Jeff Hasen???Hipcricket, @JeffHasen.?Author of?Mobilized Marketing
  9. The biggest breakthrough of 2012 was the remarkable growth of Pinterest, signaling the rise of the visual social web. Pinterest grew, not from kids, college students, or tech nerds, either, but from women across our heartland.?Dave Kerpen???Likeable Media,?@davekerpen.?Author of??Likeable Business?and ?Likeable Social Media
  10. The biggest breakthrough in digital marketing across the board? That would rapidly become an apples/oranges?comparison?? What I?m interested in watching right now are the technology products emerging around native advertising. From the New York Times Ricochet to One Spot to?inPowered, turning content into ad units is becoming a white hot area of marketing.??Rebecca Lieb???Altimeter Group,?@lieblink.?Author of?Content Marketing?and? The Truth About Search Engine Optimization
  11. Consumer curated commerce. Its not up to just the ?experts? anymore.??Jon Mandell ??1-800-Flowers.com,?@JonMandell
  12. By far the biggest breakthrough of 2012 was mobility.? Did you notice I didn?t say mobile?? For the past five years we have been saying today is the year of mobile.? In 2012 it all finally happened only it is about more than just activating mobile marketing as a channel.? Mobility is about acknowledging behavior changes as a result of having a computer less than a foot away 24 hours a day, seven days a week.? This year we began to see brands adapting products and services specifically with this in mind.? Take UPS as an example.? The company has for some time empowered shippers and receivers to track packages.? Now, with UPS My Choice customers can avoid missed deliveries by getting advance text or email messages from UPS that alert them the day before a package is scheduled to arrive. Customers also can reroute or reschedule delivery for a different day. Since its introduction in October 2011, two million people have registered for UPS My Choice and the majority are managing their deliveries from a mobile device.? For a $40 annual fee, a ?premium? member can instruct the UPS driver mid-route: put the package behind the potted plant; drop it next door; deliver at a different time or bring it to my office.? Not to be left out, FedEx has been late to this game and is just launching a similar service with an added benefit of offering evening or ?by appointment? deliveries.? These services are just one example of how brands are adapting to living in a world where mobility is prevalent.??Daina Middleton?? Performics. ?Author of?Marketing in the Participation Age
  13. LinkedIn?we are watching this once forgotten social networking site become a dominant marketing force for the long-term.?Joe Pulizzi ??Content Marketing Institute, @JuntaJoe.?Author of?Managing Content Marketing?and?Get Content Get Customers
  14. Bing and Google endorsed responsive web design (RWD) in spring 2012 was a much needed breakthrough across SEO, UX, mobile, web design, and content management for marketing. Instead of building multiple websites for different devices (an inefficient and costly route that complicates SEO), more and more companies have been building one smart website that leverages CSS, media queries, and JavaScript to adapt website content, layout, and design based on screen size, touchscreen functionality, phone capability, etc. as needed to optimize the user experience. Expect responsive design to grow significantly in demand for 2013. ?Books to read: Responsive Web Design by Ethan Marcotte, Mobile First by Luke Wroblewski, Adaptive Web Design by Aaron Gustafson. ?Angie Schottmuller ??Search Engine Watch, @aschottmuller
  15. Using real events as marketing in a non-marketing way,?like Red Bull.?Peter Shankman ?Shankman.com,?@PeterShankman. ?Author of?Customer Service: New Rules for a Social Media World?and?Nice Companies Finish First
  16. Smartphone adoption rates have reached nearly everyone and this means we will see a ton more mobile marketing opportunities on the near horizon.??Michael Stelzner ??Social Media Examiner, @MikeStelzner.?Author of?Launch
  17. I think the smaller tablet size was a good call. Personally, I like my full-size iPad. But in my work, I really have to accommodate websites for the right target audience, and that means understanding the devices and software they use. So I do have to program, code, write, design, optimize, etc. for all sorts of devices and software.?Not everyone can afford the larger tablets. I think having less expensive alternatives with the same high quality features was a good call.???Shari Thurow????Omni Marketing Interactive, @ShariThurow. Author of?When Search Meets Web Usability?.
  18. Visual content came into its own. We?ve been talking about mobile and social forever but this year consumption habits finally forced a lot of marketers to re-think formats. Video?s ceased to be a ?must get onto that.??Micro visual content went mainstream. ?Todd Wheatland, @ToddWheatland.?Author of?The Marketer?s Guide to SlideShare

It?s interesting to see that many of the respondents considered mobile (including devices) and content marketing to be the dominant marketing break through of 2012. This is an important tipping point, not just for the sales of devices but also for how and where marketers must deliver their marketing-related content. (BTW, you may also be interested in the biggest marketing surprises of 2012 and the biggest marketing #Fails of 2012.)

What do you consider to be the biggest marketing break-through of 2012? Why do you think so?

Happy Marketing,
