Childhood Friends or Osananajimi | Vocal Mimi

This thought just hit me so randomly that I have to write it down and tell you guys about it. It is one of the most clich? anime relationships but it has such a sweet feeling to it I don?t mind them overusing it. ?What?? You might ask me. Well, it is the deep bond between two people and (maybe) not (yet) in a relationship yet? Childhood friends.

Yeah... just ordinary childhood friends... Wait... oh.

Yeah? just ordinary childhood friends? Wait? oh.

According to Keima from The World Only God knows, a childhood friend has to be (pardon the awkward phrasing, it?s a translation)
The house next door ? which means very close
Onii-chan/Ototo Relationship ? which means very close friends
Yakusoku ? a promise made
Old memories ? having a common memories.
TAchiba ? a complete change in positions, the giant change between the old times.

And if you're lucky, that friendship blossoms into love. Sometimes. Rarely.

And if you?re lucky, that friendship blossoms into love. Sometimes. Rarely.

Well these are definitely not the exact definition but a mere Otakus dream of having a close (female) friend. But to a certain extent this is correct. So to begin, I?ll start with the anime version of a ?childhood friend? and move on to the (sadly) more realistic real life version.

Where do we usually find childhood friends and what kind of relationships do they usually share? In almost any anime from slice-of-life to action to drama to harems, you can find them. The relationships they share are even more varied, one sided loves, mutual respect, friends who fell out the list goes on and on.

Platonic love. Also known as the dreaded friendzone.

Platonic love. Also known as the dreaded friendzone.

So other than Keima?s weird definition of childhood friends, what is the ?official? way to say they are childhood friends? (By official I mean my opinion) Simple, if the anime premise mentions it or the characters say it themselves or you get a childhood flashback, they?re childhood friends. We just leave it to the anime or that form of fiction to determine it for us.

But that friendship can shadow a tragedy or sadness.

But that friendship can shadow a tragedy or sadness.

But why does having a childhood friend (who?s preferably a female) such a craved things among Otakus? Maybe it?s the way anime displays it and it strikes a perfect harmonized chord with a fetish that they posses or it?s really nice to share a platonic relationship with someone of the opposite sex? Nah.

Plus with the premise of childhood friend added in, it saves the writers of the story quite a lot of hassle. You want to add in a fanservicy scene of the guy awkwardly walking in on the girl and after that they both shower together. Explanation? They?re childhood friends. So not only does it please the viewers, it saves you time and trouble, rather convenient I might add.

On the topic of fanservice. By the way, that girl you might be looking for could be looking for you as well

On the topic of fanservice. By the way, that girl you might be looking for could be looking for you as well

With the simple premise of ?childhood friends? it gives you the convenience to steer the story quickly and save time on all the drama of both parties getting to know each other. You can save 5 episodes used for them to be on good friend terms and move into drama and making the show more ?exciting? to the general public. Why the inverted commas? Because some people just don?t like drama. But at the same time, it can be used for drama and tragedies, it?s one thing losing a close friend, another thing losing a friend of 10 years, as AnoHana shows how it can affect people.

I personally enjoy a little bit of drama. Seeing I already get so much of it

I personally enjoy a little bit of drama. Seeing I already get so much of it

Real life now. We all should have friends when we were kids right? So technically we can call them childhood friends right? But what age does it count as that a ?childhood friend?? If we go by the anime term and assume it means preschool (5-6 years old), then the actual chances of you still being in touch with these friends is quite low seeing the kind of society we live in this days. So I guess that could be the reason why Otakus crave for a childhood friend so much. Because I barely did have a childhood when I was younger, let alone made friends and kept in touch with them.

But the big rule is... how long you've been friends is in no way a gauge of how good friends you can be.

But the big rule is? how long you?ve been friends is in no way a gauge of how good friends you can be.

Though can we say that there is a distinct difference in the way we see childhood friends as compared to other good friends? The only thing I can think of is that you would understand your childhood friend better seeing how long you have been hanging out with them, but there are always outliers to this kind of situations as you can understand a lot about a person without spending like 8 years together if you *ahem* share certain experiences together. (See how I made that into a sexual innuendo?)

Like watching each other get dumped etc. What were you thinking?

Like watching each other get dumped etc. What were you thinking?

Honestly, in my personal opinion, anime does have certain truth to the relationship that childhood friends have with each other. The way that male and females can get rough with each other and it seem seemingly find or how both parties understand each other really well and know when to assist each other. Or it could be nothing more than a figment of my wishful thinking. But still, I find that childhood friends help to emphasise reliability in a relationship and how you know who to go to when you have problems. But remember that there is really hardly any difference between childhood friends and normal ones, so have fun with everyone together and I wish you a Happy 2013.

I have no idea where this is from, but it gets the idea across

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved a Johnson & Johnson tuberculosis drug that is the first new medicine to fight the deadly infection in more than four decades.

The agency approved J&J's pill, Sirturo, for use with older drugs to fight a hard-to-treat strain of tuberculosis that has not responded to other medications. However, the agency cautioned that the drug carries risks of potentially deadly heart problems and should be prescribed carefully by doctors.

Roughly one-third of the world's population is estimated to be infected with the bacteria causing tuberculosis. The disease is rare in the U.S., but kills about 1.4 million people a year worldwide. Of those, about 150,000 succumb to the increasingly common drug-resistant forms of the disease. About 60 percent of all cases are concentrated in China, India, Russia and Eastern Europe.

Sirturo, known chemically as bedaquiline, is the first medicine specifically designed for treating multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. That's a form of the disease that cannot be treated with at least two of the four primary antibiotics used for tuberculosis.

The standard drugs used to fight the disease were developed in the 1950s and 1960s.

"The antibiotics used to treat it have been around for at least 40 years and so the bacterium has become more and more resistant to what we have," said Chrispin Kambili, global medical affairs leader for J&J's Janssen division.

The drug carries a boxed warning indicating that it can interfere with the heart's electrical activity, potentially leading to fatal heart rhythms.

"Sirturo provides much-needed treatment for patients who have don't have other therapeutic options available," said Edward Cox, director of the FDA's antibacterial drugs office. "However, because the drug also carries some significant risks, doctors should make sure they use it appropriately and only in patients who don't have other treatment options."

Nine patients taking Sirturo died in company testing compared with two patients taking a placebo. Five of the deaths in the Sirturo group seemed to be related to tuberculosis, but no explanation was apparent for the remaining four.

Despite the deaths, the FDA approved the drug under its accelerated approval program, which allows the agency to clear innovative drugs based on promising preliminary results.

Last week, the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen criticized that approach, noting the drug's outstanding safety issues.

"The fact that bedaquiline is part of a new class of drug means that an increased level of scrutiny should be required for its approval," the group states. "But the FDA had not yet answered concerns related to unexplained increases in toxicity and death in patients getting the drug."

The FDA said it approved the drug based on two mid-stage studies enrolling 440 patients taking Sirturo. Both studies were designed to measure how long it takes patients to be free of tuberculosis.

Results from the first trial showed most patients taking Sirturo plus older drugs were cured after 83 days, compared with 125 days for those taking a placebo plus older drugs. The second study showed most Sirturo patients were cured after 57 days.

(AP) ? The family of an ailing, pregnant American woman missing in Afghanistan with her Canadian husband has broken months of silence over the mysterious case, making public appeals for the couple's safe return.

James Coleman, the father of 27-year-old Caitlan Coleman, told The Associated Press over the weekend that she was due to deliver in January and needed urgent medical attention for a liver ailment that required regular checkups. He said he and his wife, Lyn, last heard from their son-in-law Josh on Oct. 8 from an Internet cafe in what Josh described as an "unsafe" part of Afghanistan. The Colemans asked that Josh be identified by his first name only to protect his privacy.

The couple had embarked on a journey last July that took them to Russia, the central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, and then finally to Afghanistan.

Neither the Taliban nor any other militant group has claimed it is holding the couple, leading some to believe they were kidnapped. But no ransom demand has been made.

An Afghan official said their trail has gone dead.

"Our goal is to get them back safely and healthy," the father told AP on Friday night by phone. "I don't know what kind of care they're getting or not getting," he added. "We're just an average family and we don't have connections with anybody and we don't have a lot of money."

He made a similar appeal in a video posted on YouTube on Dec. 13.

"We appeal to whoever is caring for her to show compassion and allow Caity, Josh and our unborn grandbaby to come home," he said.

Before the video came out, the family had kept quiet about the case since the couple disappeared in early October. They appear to have broken their silence in hopes it might lead to a breakthrough.

But many questions remain over the disappearances.

It is not known whether the couple is still alive or how or why they entered Afghanistan. And there is no information about what they were doing in the country before they went missing.

James Coleman, of York County, Pennsylvania, said he was not entirely sure what his daughter and her husband were doing in Afghanistan. But he surmised they may have been seeking to help Afghans by joining an aid group after touring the region. In the AP interview, he described his daughter as "naive" and "adventuresome" with a humanitarian bent.

He said Josh did not disclose their exact location in his last email contact on Oct. 8, only saying they were not in a safe place. James Coleman also said the last withdrawals from the couple's account were made Oct. 8 and 9 in Kabul with no activity on the account and no further communication from them after that date.

"He just said they were heading into the mountains ? wherever that was, I don't know," the father said, adding, "They're both kind of naive, always have been in my view. Why they actually went to Afghanistan, I'm not sure... I assume it was more of the same, getting to know the local people, if they could find an NGO (non-governmental organization) or someone they could work with in a little way."

There was some indication that the couple knew they were in dangerous territory, though they perhaps did not grasp just how dangerous. James Coleman said in general, they preferred small villages and communities because they felt safer there than in big cities, and that is where they wanted to focus their travels.

"I assume they were going to strike out on foot like they were doing," he added.

Both the U.S. State Department and Canadian Foreign Affairs Ministry say they are looking into the disappearance.

"Canada is pursuing all appropriate channels and officials are in close contact with local authorities," Canadian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokeswoman Chrystiane Roy said Friday, calling the incident a "possible kidnap."

It was not known whether the silence over the case by U.S. and Canadian officials and, until now, by the Coleman family was because of ongoing negotiations to seek their release. But information black-outs have kept some similar past cases quiet in an attempt to not further endanger those missing.

According to Hazrat Janan, the head of the provincial council in Afghanistan's Wardak province, the two were abducted in Wardak in an area about 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of the capital Kabul. They were passing through Wardak while traveling from Ghazni province south of Kabul to the capital.

Wardak province, despite its proximity to Kabul, is a rugged, mountainous haven for the Taliban and travel along its roads is dangerous. Foreigners who do not travel with military escorts take a substantial risk.

He said they were believed to have been taken from one district in Wardak to a second and then into Ghazni.

"After that, the trail went dead," Janan said.

He said it was suspected that the kidnappers were Taliban because criminal gangs would have likely asked for a ransom.

When the AP contacted Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid about the missing couple two months ago, he said the group had carried out an investigation and found no Taliban members were involved.

"We do not know about these two foreigners," he said in a telephone interview.

Janan's information could not be independently verified, and U.S. and Canadian officials still do not say for certain the couple was abducted.

NATO officials said they had no current information on the case, which was turned over to the U.S. State Department after it was determined the couple were not affiliated with foreign military forces.

Coleman said his daughter and her husband met on the Internet and married in 2011. They had previously travelled through Central America so they had some experience abroad.

During their recent Asian travels, they bought local goods to help vendors, slept in their tent and hostels and interacted with villagers. Despite her travel fever, love of history and a desire to do good, her father said Caitlan "wanted basically to be a housewife and have a bunch of kids."

Overweight Pets | Albuquerque Veterinarian | TLC Pet and Uptown ...

Nutrition experts like to portray weight control as a simple matter of ?calories in minus calories out.? But as anyone who?s ever been on a diet knows all too well, it isn?t quite that easy! There are many factors that affect weight, such as genetics, metabolic rate, weather, and even breed. Ultimately, the only ones we humans can control for our pets are diet and exercise?so let?s see why and how to manage our pets? weight.treat

In our busy lives, we may sometimes use treats or extra food as a substitute for quality time with our pets; or our pets get a little chunky because we just love to pamper them. But letting a pet become overweight is actually the opposite of love?we?re truly risking their health and lives for a few treats, a nibble from our dinner plates, or an extra spoonful of chow. The list of obesity-related diseases is a long one and includes arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, liver and kidney disease, urinary tract disease, skin and coat issues, and many more. It?s up to us to be the ?adults? in the family and call the shots on what our furry ?kids? are eating

Unfortunately, overweight has become the norm for our dogs and cats. In fact, many people would consider the ?ideal? body condition as too thin. Yet research has shown that dogs and cats?live longer?significantly longer?if they?re kept slightly underweight. A long-term study done by Purina looked at the difference in lifespan between Labrador Retrievers who were kept slimmer versus normal Labs (who were fed according to Purina?s own directions for that food!). The dogs who were fed less lived TWO years longer, and and the onset of degenerative diseases such as arthritis was significantly delayed. Remember, this comparison was between normal dogs and underweight dogs. Overweight pets? lives, health, and comfort are damaged even more.

Other research has shown that, in both cats and dogs, feeding a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet results in healthier weight loss and better muscle mass retention than high-fiber ?weight loss? diets. This makes perfect sense when we consider that our dogs? and cats? ancestors?and their current cousins?are designed to eat prey animals that are just that: high in protein, relatively high in fat, and very low in carbohydrates. Canned, raw, or properly balanced homemade diets are ideal for both dogs and cats; and are especially important for cats, who need the extra moisture and high protein for urinary health. Dry food is not recommended for cats, period.

?Light? and ?weight control? diets tend to be lower in fat and protein, and higher in fiber and carbohydrates, than comparable regular foods. But this is taking the nutritional balance in the exact opposite direction from the natural high-protein, low-carb carnivore diet our pets were designed to eat. If the amount of ?light? food being fed is not restricted, most pets will gain weight on that food. Carb-based diets just aren?t satisfying to the canine and feline palate, so pets will eat more of the food to get more of what they want and need. Moreover, a recent study showed tremendous variation in the amount of calories in different brands of ?light? foods?some were higher in calories than other brands? regular foods!

If your pet is a treat junky, there are things you can do to moderate the number of treat calories your dog or cat is getting without making your pet (or you!) feel deprived. For larger treats, break them into smaller pieces. Your pet will quickly adjust to the new size and feel just as satisfied. Give a lower calorie treat; or try treats made from dehydrated chicken or other meat that add primarily protein and little or no carbs. Limit rawhide bones, marrow bones, and other ?chew? treats; many of them are very high in fat and will load a huge amount of calories to your pet?s daily intake. To your pet, it?s more about the attention and love from you that your companion associates with treats, than about the treat itself. Whatever treats or ?shared? food your pet gets, you need to deduct treat calories from meals to balance the day?s total. Yes, that means the meal needs to be smaller!

In addition to providing a wholesome, appropriate diet, there are supplements that will help your pet get the most from food, as well as strengthen the immune system, optimize overall health, and support longevity. These include: (1) Omega-3 fatty acids, (2) digestive enzymes, and (3) probiotics, and?the fourth, antioxidants, are needed for immune system support.)

Unfortunately, counting calories is the best way to understand what we?re feeding our cats and dogs. Happily for those of us who recoil at math, it?s much easier for our pets than for people, who need to know calorie counts in a huge variety of food. Most of the time, we?ll be dealing with just a few foods and treats.

Calories in Pet Food*

Here?s a simple chart to give you a ballpark estimate of different types of pet food:

Food Type Cat Dog
Dry Adult 200-600 kcal/cup 300-600 kcal/cup
Dry Diet 200-400 kcal/cup 200-400 kcal/cup
Canned Adult 80-200 kcal/5.5-6 oz. can 200-400 kcal/12.5-13.2 oz. can
Canned Diet 80-200 kcal/5.5-6 oz. can 200-400 kcal/12.5-13.2 oz. can
Raw 300-550 kcal/cup 300-550 kcal/cup
Treats 10-300 kcal/treat 10-300 kcal/treat

*What we commonly refer to as a ?calorie? is technically a kilocalorie, or kcal. There may be little or no difference between regular and ?diet? foods. Calorie information is not required to be on the label, although some makers provide it. Check the manufacturer?s website, or call for calorie info on each particular food or treat.

Calculate Your Pet?s Caloric Needs

Your pet?s current weight: ______lbs (______ kg) ?To calculate kg, divide lbs. by 2.2

Your pet is estimated at _______ on the Body Condition Score Chart (below). The ideal BCS for disease prevention and longevity is about 4.

Your pet?s ideal weight: _________ (in kg; this may be based on breed standards, or your veterinarian can give you a good estimate.)

Next, estimate your pet?s daily caloric needs using these formulas:

(1) Resting Energy Requirement (RER)

30(weight in kg) + 70 = ______ kcal

(2) Metabolic Energy Requirement (MER)

RER x Multiplier (see chart below) = ______ kcal

This will give you your:

Target daily caloric intake: __________

(This is an estimated average only. Actual caloric needs vary with age, activity level, weather, and other factors.)

With this in hand, along with calorie information for the food and treats you feed your pet, you can calculate how much food to feed.

Example:

Fluffy weighs 15 pounds (6.8 kg). His body condition score is around 6-1/2, and his ideal weight is 12 pounds.

Fluffy?s Resting Energy Requirement (RER)

30(6.8) + 70 = _274_ kcal

Fluffy?s Metabolic Energy Requirement (MER)

RER x Multiplier (0.8) = __219__ kcal

Fluffy?s target daily caloric intake: 219 kcal

In canned food terms, this is between 1 and 3 cans per day.

For dry food, this may be anywhere from 1 cup per day to only 1/3 cup per day!

This is why knowing the caloric content of the food is so important!

Many?s the obese cat I?ve seen whose guardians were feeding a whole cup of dry food per day. This way too much of most dry foods, which are highly concentrated calorie sources, full of fattening carbohydrates and not enough moisture. Cat or dog, high protein, low carb wet food (canned, homemade, raw, fresh, or reconstituted freeze-dried) is the key to healthy weight?which is, of course, the key to health and longevity!

Ford Focus and Fiesta are setting the world on fire

n/a

Ford is the hottest brand globally and the new 2013 Ford Focus and Fiesta are leading the charge. The two cars are the best-selling nameplates in the world. Through September global sales, the Ford Focus was the best selling global vehicle nameplate, and the new Fiesta is the best-selling global B-car in the world. The two give Ford the best-selling B and C-car in the world. The Ford brand is also doing quite well in its home country and is on track to sell 2.2 million vehicles in 2012. Ford is the only brand to top the 2 million sales mark in the U.S. since 2007.

Ford says they are the only automaker that has three of their nameplates in the global top ten selling vehicles. The Focus is number one, F-Series at number four and the Fiesta is number five. Ford is powering their vehicles with EcoBoost engines that are getting global awards and recognition for their power and fuel-efficiency.

Ford?s new fuel-efficient 1.0-liter EcoBoost

Ford will sell more than 520,000 EcoBoost-powered vehicles by the end of 2012 since the engine?s introduction in 2009. The engines are used in Europe in the Fiesta, and Ford?s new 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder engine arrives late next year in the new Fiesta in the U.S.

When the new Fiesta gets the new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, It?s sure to attract even more buyers. The new three-cylinder engine from Ford is being used first in the European Ford Focus and is now being offered in the C-MAX and B-MAX in Europe. The engine has been wildly accepted in Europe already in the Focus, and should be a big hit when it is offered in the smaller Fiesta.

The small fuel-efficient engine has been highly acclaimed and gets excellent fuel-mileage. It achieves 58.9 mpg in the Focus (which is the European standard for estimating mileage) and is having a big impact around the globe. ?For a three-cylinder to power a vehicle like the Ford Focus with such ease proves the future is very, very bright for the internal combustion engine,? said Slavnich of Engine Technology International.

Focus ST is Ford?s first global performance car

Ford has just launched the new 2013 Focus ST and is Ford?s first global performance car and is very popular in Europe and around the world. The sporty performance compact has been os sale in the UK since July, and almost 1,600 have sold which represents five per cent of overall registrations for the new Focus ST. The hot hatch is available in estate and five-door body styles and is the UK?s second best-selling car behind the new Fiesta. Ford Focus ST outsells the Golf GTi by more than two to one.

?Focus and Fiesta represent the best of our One Ford plan,? said Jim Farley, Ford?s executive vice president, Global Marketing, Sales and Service and Lincoln. ?In just three years, Ford has transformed our global small car lineup and started winning over customers worldwide with vehicles that are not only fun-to-drive but also fuel-efficient ? largely thanks to our award-winning EcoBoost engines.?

The numbers tell the story and according to Polk global industry data, global Ford Focus registrations totaled 737,856 through September making it number one in sales in the world, and Fiesta new vehicle registrations totaled 560,061 for the same period, making it the world?s best-selling B-Car. Ford is the brand to watch globally as they have a plan for the new Ford Focus and new 2014 Fiesta in this new global era.
