Former joint chief executive of Wipro Ltd?s information technology business Suresh Vaswani has been appointed as the president of Dell Inc.?s $8.5 billion software services and outsourcing business.
Vaswani, an Indian IT industry veteran who spent 25 years at Wipro, will replace Dell?s head of services business Stephen Schuckenbrock who ?resigned to pursue other opportunity?, the company said on Thursday. Vaswani joined Dell last year as the chairman of the company?s Indian operations and executive vice-president of Dell Services. In his new role, Vaswani will report to Michael Dell, the company said.
Over past few years, Dell has been attempting to increase its share of the global software services and outsourcing business and compete better with rivals International Business Machines Corp..
Earlier this year, Dell announced the acquisition of Quest Software Inc. to push more aggressively for increasing software revenue. The company still gets half its business from PCs, a segment facing slump as large enterprises shift to newer devices such as Apple Inc.?s iPad.
Dell is hoping that Vaswani?s expertise in offshore outsourcing will help the company win more business from customers seeking to cut operational costs by giving away software development and back office projects.
?We have made huge strides transforming Dell into a leading provider of end-to-end solutions, and our services business has been a cornerstone of our progress,? said Dell. ?Suresh?s deep services expertise and proven track record make him the right leader to continue growing our services business and fuelling our transformation.?
