Blasts by Jones, Loney fuel Rays' win

Associated Press Sports

MIAMI (AP) - Alex Colome became the latest homegrown Tampa Bay Rays pitcher to make an impression.

Matt Joyce and James Loney homered to support Colome in his major league debut Thursday night and helped send the Tampa Bay Rays to a 5-2 victory over the Miami Marlins, who lost their ninth straight.

Colome (1-0) allowed an unearned run and five hits in 5 2-3 innings. He walked two and struck out seven as the Rays won their fifth straight.

Tampa Bay has used a homegrown starting pitcher - a pitcher it drafted or signed internationally by the Rays - for 363 of the last 380 games dating back to Oct. 1, 2010.

Colome, 24, is the nephew of former Rays reliever Jesus Colome. He was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2007 and Wednesday became the first product of the Rays' Dominican academy to reach the majors.

"I've waited a long time for this, and I feel very happy," Colome said.

Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless ninth for his 11th save in 16 opportunities.

Ricky Nolasco (3-6) gave up three runs and four hits in 6 2-3 innings. He walked four and struck out five. The Marlins have dropped 16 of 18.

Ben Zobrist had a two-run double off Mike Dunn in the ninth to build a 5-2 Tampa Bay lead.

The Rays went ahead 3-1 in the seventh when Loney led off with his fifth homer.

Joyce `s two-run homer in the sixth gave Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead. It was Joyce's ninth homer and followed a one-out walk to Zobrist.

The Marlins scored a run in the first on Jose Molina's passed ball with the bases loaded. Colome escaped further damage by retiring Greg Dobbs on a groundout for the final out with runners on second and third.

"I was most impressed with his ability to stay calm throughout the whole thing, but his stuff is a little bit overwhelming. It's really good," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

Ahead 1-0 in the fifth, Miami put runners in first and third with one out. Colome then got Placido Polanco to hit into an inning-ending double play.

"It saved my life," he said of the double play.

Miami scored an unearned run in the eighth, after Loney's error on Dobbs' grounder loaded the bases with two outs. Josh Lueke walked pinch-hitter Miguel Olivo to force home Polanco, then struck out Rob Brantly to end the inning.

Miami's 31-year-old infielder Ed Lucas made his major league debut when he entered to play shortstop to begin the ninth. Lucas spent nearly 10 years in the minors.

"It was pretty amazing," Lucas said. "It was especially exciting because it was a critical part of the game for a while. But it was a dream come true."

Tampa Bay improved to 9-1 in interleague play, while the Marlins fell to 1-8.

Miami rookie Marcell Ozuna singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.

NOTES: Miami was expected to announce after the game RHP Jacob Turner would be called up from Triple-A New Orleans to start Friday night's game against RHP Shaun Marcum (0-5, 5.77) and the New York Mets. ... Rays LHP Matt Moore (8-0, 2.21) will oppose Cleveland Indians RHP Corey Kluber (3-3, 4.57) on Friday night. ... Marlins OF Giancarlo Stanton (strained hamstring) will back off his rehab due to sore knees, manager Mike Redmond said. ... Rays manager Joe Maddon said RHP Alex Cobb (cut on middle finger) would start Tuesday if, "he says he he's well." The Rays were expected to make a postgame roster move before announcing a starter for Saturday. RHP Jeremy Hellickson will start Sunday. ... Maddon was asked how important next week's draft was for the team. "Our version of free agency," he said.

Why animals compare the present with the past

May 30, 2013 ? Humans, like other animals, compare things. We care not only how well off we are, but whether we are better or worse off than others around us, or than we were last year. New research by scientists at the University of Bristol shows that such comparisons can give individuals an evolutionary advantage.

According to standard theory, the best response to current circumstances should be unaffected by what has happened in the past. But the Bristol study, published in the journal Science, shows that in a changing, unpredictable world it is important to be sensitive to past conditions.

The research team, led by Professor John McNamara in Bristol's School of Mathematics, built a mathematical model to understand how animals should behave when they are uncertain about the pattern of environmental change. They found that when animals are used to rich conditions but then conditions suddenly worsen, they should work less hard than animals exposed to poor conditions all along.

The predictions from the model closely match findings from classic laboratory experiments in the 1940s, in which rats were trained to run along a passage to gain food rewards. The rats ran more slowly for small amounts of food if they were used to getting large amounts of food, compared to control rats that were always rewarded with the smaller amount.

This so-called 'contrast effect' has also been reported in bees, starlings and a variety of mammals including newborn children, but until now it lacked a convincing explanation.

Dr Tim Fawcett, a research fellow in Bristol's School of Biological Sciences and a co-author on the study, said: "The effects in our model are driven by uncertainty. In changing environments, conditions experienced in the past can be a valuable indicator of how things will be in the future."

This, in turn, affects how animals should respond to their current situation. "An animal that is used to rich conditions thinks that the world is generally a good place," Dr Fawcett explained. "So when conditions suddenly turn bad, it interprets this as a temporary 'blip' and hunkers down, expecting that rich conditions will return soon. In contrast, an animal used to poor conditions expects those conditions to persist, and so cannot afford to rest."

The model also predicts the reverse effect, in which animals work harder for food when conditions suddenly improve, compared to animals experiencing rich conditions all along. This too has been found in laboratory experiments on a range of animals.

The Bristol study highlights unpredictable environmental fluctuations as an important evolutionary force. "Rapid changes favour individuals that are responsive and able to adjust their behaviour in the light of past experience," said Dr Fawcett. "The natural world is a dynamic and unpredictable place, but evolutionary models often neglect this. Our work suggests that models of more complex environments are important for understanding behaviour."

Cassini finds hints of activity at Saturn moon Dione

May 29, 2013 ? From a distance, most of the Saturnian moon Dione resembles a bland cueball. Thanks to close-up images of a 500-mile-long (800-kilometer-long) mountain on the moon from NASA's Cassini spacecraft, scientists have found more evidence for the idea that Dione was likely active in the past. It could still be active now.

"A picture is emerging that suggests Dione could be a fossil of the wondrous activity Cassini discovered spraying from Saturn's geyser moon Enceladus or perhaps a weaker copycat Enceladus," said Bonnie Buratti of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., who leads the Cassini science team that studies icy satellites. "There may turn out to be many more active worlds with water out there than we previously thought."

Other bodies in the solar system thought to have a subsurface ocean -- including Saturn's moons Enceladus and Titan and Jupiter's moon Europa -- are among the most geologically active worlds in our solar system. They have been intriguing targets for geologists and scientists looking for the building blocks of life elsewhere in the solar system. The presence of a subsurface ocean at Dione would boost the astrobiological potential of this once-boring iceball.

Hints of Dione's activity have recently come from Cassini, which has been exploring the Saturn system since 2004. The spacecraft's magnetometer has detected a faint particle stream coming from the moon, and images showed evidence for a possible liquid or slushy layer under its rock-hard ice crust. Other Cassini images have also revealed ancient, inactive fractures at Dione similar to those seen at Enceladus that currently spray water ice and organic particles.

The mountain examined in the latest paper -- published in March in the journal Icarus -- is called Janiculum Dorsa and ranges in height from about 0.6 to 1.2 miles (1 to 2 kilometers). The moon's crust appears to pucker under this mountain as much as about 0.3 mile (0.5 kilometer).

"The bending of the crust under Janiculum Dorsa suggests the icy crust was warm, and the best way to get that heat is if Dione had a subsurface ocean when the ridge formed," said Noah Hammond, the paper's lead author, who is based at Brown University, Providence, R.I.

Dione gets heated up by being stretched and squeezed as it gets closer to and farther from Saturn in its orbit. With an icy crust that can slide around independently of the moon's core, the gravitational pulls of Saturn get exaggerated and create 10 times more heat, Hammond explained. Other possible explanations, such as a local hotspot or a wild orbit, seemed unlikely.

Scientists are still trying to figure out why Enceladus became so active while Dione just seems to have sputtered along. Perhaps the tidal forces were stronger on Enceladus, or maybe the larger fraction of rock in the core of Enceladus provided more radioactive heating from heavy elements. In any case, liquid subsurface oceans seem to be common on these once-boring icy satellites, fueling the hope that other icy worlds soon to be explored -- like the dwarf planets Ceres and Pluto -- could have oceans underneath their crusts. NASA's Dawn and New Horizons missions reach those dwarf planets in 2015.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. JPL designed, developed and assembled the Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras. The imaging team consists of scientists from the United States, England, France and Germany. The imaging operations center is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

Hammond's work was funded through a NASA Outer Planets Research grant.

AP sources: Obama preparing to name Comey to FBI

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is preparing to nominate former Bush administration official James Comey to head the FBI, people familiar with the decision said Wednesday.

Three people with knowledge of the selection said Obama planned to nominate Comey, who was the No. 2 in President George W. Bush's Justice Department. The three people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the selection ahead of Obama's announcement, which was not expected immediately.

Comey became a hero to Democratic opponents of Bush's warrantless wiretapping program when Comey refused for a time to reauthorize it. Bush revised the surveillance program when confronted with the threat of resignation by Comey and current FBI Director Robert Mueller, who is stepping down in September.

Comey's selection was first reported by NPR and was not expected to be announced for several days at least. Senate confirmation will be needed.

The change in leadership comes as the FBI and Justice Department are under scrutiny for their handing of several investigations. Obama has ordered a review of FBI investigations into leaks to reporters, including the secret gathering of Associated Press phone records and emails of a Fox News reporter. And there have been questions raised about whether the FBI properly responded to warnings from Russian authorities about a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings. The agency, meanwhile, is conducting a highly-anticipated investigation into the Internal Revenue Service over its handling of conservative groups seeking tax exempt status.

Comey was deputy attorney general in 2005 when he unsuccessfully tried to limit tough interrogation tactics against suspected terrorists. He told then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales that some of the practices were wrong and would damage the department's reputation.

Some Democrats denounced those methods as torture, particularly the use of waterboarding, which produces the same sensation as drowning.

Earlier in his career, Comey served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, one of the nation's most prominent prosecutorial offices and one at the front lines of terrorism, corporate malfeasance, organized crime and the war on drugs.

As an assistant U.S. attorney in Virginia, Comey handled the investigation of the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers housing complex near Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, that killed 19 U.S. military personnel.

Comey led the Justice Department's corporate fraud task force and spurred the creation of violent crime impact teams in 20 cities, focusing on crimes committed with guns.

He was general counsel at Connecticut-based hedge fund Bridgewater Associates from 2010 until earlier this year, when he left and became a lecturer and researcher at Columbia Law School.

Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he had not heard from the White House about Comey's nomination, but that he was concerned about Comey's hedge fund connections.

"If he's nominated, he would have to answer questions about his recent work in the hedge fund industry," Grassley said. "The administration's efforts to criminally prosecute Wall Street for its part in the economic downturn have been abysmal, and his agency would have to help build the case against some of his colleagues."

Comey was at the center of one of the Bush administration's great controversies ? an episode that focused attention on the administration's controversial tactics in the war on terror.

In stunning testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2007, Comey said he thought Bush's no-warrant wiretapping program was so questionable that Comey refused for a time to reauthorize it, leading to a standoff with White House officials at the bedside of ailing Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Comey said he refused to recertify the program because Ashcroft had reservations about its legality.

Senior government officials had expressed concerns about whether the National Security Agency, which administered the warrantless eavesdropping program, had the proper oversight in place. Other concerns included whether any president possessed the legal and constitutional authority to authorize the program as it was carried out at the time.

The White House, Comey said, recertified the program without the Justice Department's signoff, allowing it to operate for about three weeks without concurrence on whether it was legal. Comey, Ashcroft, Mueller and other Justice Department officials at one point considered resigning, Comey said.

"I couldn't stay if the administration was going to engage in conduct that the Department of Justice had said had no legal basis," Comey told the Senate panel.

A day after the March 10, 2004, incident at Ashcroft's hospital bedside, Bush ordered changes to the program to accommodate the department's concerns. Ashcroft signed the presidential order to recertify the program about three weeks later.

The dramatic hospital confrontation involved Comey, who was the acting attorney general during Ashcroft's absence, and a White House team that included Bush's then-counsel, Alberto Gonzales, and White House chief of staff Andy Card, Comey said. Gonzales later succeeded Ashcroft as attorney general.

Comey testified that when he refused to certify the program, Gonzales and Card headed to Ashcroft's sick bed in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital.

When Gonzales appealed to Ashcroft, the ailing attorney general lifted his head off the pillow and in straightforward terms described his views of the program, Comey said. Then he pointed out that Comey, not Ashcroft, held the powers of the attorney general at that moment.

Gonzales and Card then left the hospital room, Comey said.

"I was angry," Comey told the panel. "I thought I had just witnessed an effort to take advantage of a very sick man who did not have the powers of the attorney general."

FAQ: The 'Google Edition' HTC One

HTC One NUXEverything you need to know about the HTC One with Nexus User Experience

Google and HTC today announced the "Google Edition" HTC One, which basically is an HTC One running stock (more or less) Android 4.2.2. That, of course, resonated deeply among those who prefer the "stock" Android experience. But the HTC One -- like the Samsung Galaxy S4, which also will be released as a "Google Experience" device this summer -- wasn't designed to be a vanilla Android device. So there will be trade-offs, make no mistake.

There's been significantly more said about the HTC One GE (as we've taken to calling it around here) in regards to how things will work, and what's been stripped out.

Here's what we know so far:

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, live at D11

Elon Musk is a busy man. He's also a man who isn't afraid to speak his mind, as we found out during his SXSW keynote earlier this year. This evening, he's capping off a day of interviews at D11 with one of his own. As CEO of both Tesla Motors and SpaceX, he knows a thing or two about transportation -- both within this atmosphere and beyond. Grab a cup of cocoa and join us after the break as we cover it live, won't you?

Family of Pamela Jackson will soon find out identity of body found ...

The family of missing Chester-le-Street grandmother Pamela Jackson are expected to find out the identity of a body found on moorland

FOR months Pamela Jackson?s heartbroken family have watched as search teams scoured the countryside for clues.

Now loved ones are anxiously awaiting formal identification of a body discovered more than 100 miles away from her home on the West Yorkshire Moorland.

Detectives are today expected to release further details after a body was found in Turvin Road, near Ripponden, Halifax, on Monday.

It brings to an end more than 12 weeks of heartache for her family which began when her frantic son Joe, 21, made a call to police after his mum vanished.

In that time there has been a cross-county police operation involving dozens of officers who have conducted a painstaking search for the 55-year-old.

More than 60 specialist officers from County Durham and West Yorkshire have employed high-tech equipment including sonar devices to scour the bed of the River Wear near her home.

Railway lines, embankments and a local nature reserve were also combed for clues in a bid to trace the grandmother-of-four.

But this week officers using police dogs made a breakthrough in a remote part of the North West.

The mum-of-three was discovered ?some metres? from the roadside more than three months after she vanished from her home in Chester-le-Street, County Durham on March 2.

Her partner Adrian Muir, 50, from Halifax, has been charged with her murder.

Last month officers were scouring the countryside near her North East home but the hunt moved hundreds of miles away at the beginning of May.

Specialist search teams from West Yorkshire and Durham police joined forces to trawl the undergrowth as the hunt for the grandmother approached the third month.

During the search her sister Marion Elsinor, 52, who is a care home cook in County Durham, made an emotional appeal for help to find her.

She said then: ?It?s an ongoing nightmare. It is out of character for her to go off and not to tell anyone where she would be.?

Youngest sister Deborah Leighton, 51, who lives in nearby Consett, added at the time: ?She is an important part of our family as she was the oldest sister.

?As the youngest sister, I always looked up to her. She looked after us as my mum was always working. I just miss her. She needs to come home so we can do the right thing and bury her.

?We need to give her a proper send-off instead of just wondering where she is.?

Detectives vowed to find Pamela?s body as they scoured Muir?s home and locations where the pair might have visited. Officers went through rubbish bins and gardens of houses in The Crescent and neighbouring streets.

Posters were put up around Chester-le-Street appealing for anyone with any information to get in touch. Officers also carried out house-to-house inquiries and forensics teams examined Pamela?s three-bedroom home.

In 1997, Pamela, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, spoke to the Chronicle when her disability benefit was stopped.

At the time, Pamela, who couldn?t walk, dress, cook or bathe herself, told the Chronicle that she feared she would be deprived of daily visits by a team of helpers.

Investors making more on real estate and stocks in Dubai than ...

Posted on 29 May 2013 with 2 comments from readers

Dubai is a city that likes to be the biggest and best and indeed the Guiness Book of Records has opened an office here. And currently investors are making more on real estate and stocks in Dubai than anywhere else in the world, as the only independent investment newsletter for the region published by ArabianMoney reveals this month (subscribe here).

ArabianMoney editor and publisher Peter Cooper goes onto the floor of the Dubai Financial Market in the latest issue to swap stories with veteran broker Mohammed Ali Yasin, managing director of the National Bank of Abu Dhabi?s brokerage arm Abu Dhabi Financial Services.

    World beating performance

With Dubai villas up 35 per cent in the past 12 months and the local stock market 46 per cent up since the start of the year, there is a buzz in the air at the DFM. A delegation of African investors sweeps past the video screens and black leather seats where the hardcore national investors hang out.

But Mr. Yasin does not think Dubai stocks are about to meltdown. Far from it, he thinks we have another two to three years before the market hits the top, though not necessarily at the current pace of advance. Readers of the ArabianMoney investment newsletter still have plenty of time to choose their stocks.

It?s been the same story in real estate with price rises also accelerating over the past few months if the reports of estate agents are correct. Some think it is all a bit too much too soon, others that this is too little too late!

But again the real question is how long the boom can last and the ArabianMoney investment newsletter has its own answer for subscribers only. Get the insider tips on the world?s hottest investment market today by signing up and we will send you the current issue immediately.

With May sweeps coming to a close, we now prepare to enter the equivalent of a TV viewer?s off-season featuring lots of reruns and baseball, forced to wait out the long summer until the fall premieres. In this on-demand world, why do we still have to wait for television? I?m not going to stand for this outrage. Instead of waiting, I?m going to provide rash reviews without all the information ? maybe CNN will hire me. To wit, here are my reviews of a couple of the shows premiering this fall based solely on their three-minute trailers:

BERLIN (AP) ? New Chinese Premier Li Keqiang says his government wants to attract foreign companies and is willing to undertake reforms to promote investment.

Speaking Monday after meeting Economy Minister Philipp Roesler, Li said foreign companies needed to be able to expect fair competition and protection for their patents and copyrights.

The dpa news agency reports Li said: "China will not deviate from promoting reforms and opening to the outside."

Chancellor Angela Merkel vowed after meeting Li Sunday that Germany would work to avoid a trade war by using its economic clout to block the European Union from imposing punitive tariffs on Chinese products like solar panels.

Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert says the chancellor also discussed human rights and artistic freedom with Li. He gave no details of Li's response.

Krups EA9000 Automated Espresso Machine: Turn Your Kitchen into a Private Starbucks

Krups EA9000 Automated Espresso Machine: Turn Your Kitchen into a Private Starbucks

You've been standing in line for 15 minutes already as the neck-beards behind the counter discuss the high points of the latest Vampire Weekend release. Do you really pay $5 a cup to put up with this shit? Instead, invest your hard-earned cash in a barista that will get your order right every, single, time.

    What Is It?

    It's a barista in a box?a self-contained coffee grinder, drip/espresso maker, and milk frother.

    Who's It For?

Folk that want pro-quality lattes without having to endure the unwashed masses at the local coffee house.

    Design

Sleek and modern, the complete opposite of the hissing stainless steel monstrosities at the coffee shop, the EA 9000 fits easily onto a kitchen or office counter and runs on a 220V power supply. The water tank is hidden behind the front right panel while the front left conceals the coffee ground ejection tray and cleaner solution pump. The integrated grinder is fed through a hopper on the top of the machine, and the pre-ground hopper is located directly in front of that, accessible via an activation button on the right of the unit's touchscreen display. Coffee and espresso are ejected from a height-adjustable dual-outlet spout and the milk frother is stored behind the filling station.

    Using It

Oh wow. Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow. Setup was easy; take it out of the box, install the water tank, ground collector, and drip tray, and turn it on. You'll have to input a bit of initial information?your relative water hardness, for example?but that's an easy task on the large touchscreen. All your commands and drink orders, in fact, are input through the screen, save for powering on the device.

The EA9000 takes about half a minute to preheat after it's initially been turned on and will make a 30 ml cup of ristretto in 42 seconds, one 60 ml espresso in 45 seconds, a 180 ml cup of coffee in 1:05, a 300 ml cappuccino in 1:49, and a 260 ml latte in 1:57. This thing is phenomenal.

    The Best Part

The consistency of the drinks is fantastic, every espresso and latte comes out tasting exactly the same as the last. Also the entire process outside of refilling the bean hopper and water tank is completely hands off and absurdly entertaining to watch in action. Plus, it delivers potent little nitrogen-packed discs of grounds at the end of the coffee making process which do wonders in the garden.

    Tragic Flaw

There is always something that needs rinsing or washing or emptying or refilling in this machine. It seems you can't go more three drinks without having to expunge the drip tray or reload the water tank. It's exhausting.

    This Is Weird...

Your cappuccino is always watching you.

Krups EA9000 Automated Espresso Machine: Turn Your Kitchen into a Private Starbucks

    Test Notes

    • Strength of brew and size of serving are both adjustable from the drink order menu.
    • Hopper holds approximately half a pound of whole beans.
    • Water tank holds enough reserves for 4-5 large coffees. The integrated filter lasts an average of 50 tank refills.

    Should I Buy It?

Do you have $2500 burning a hole in your pocket? If so, by all means yes. This thing is freakin' sweet.

Anchor Fired For Claiming He Was Targeted by the IRS Explores ...

Fox News correspondent James Rosen and former CBS correspondent Kimberly Dozier are just two of the journalists who have found themselves involved in scandals out of Washington this month. Now a veteran St. Louis anchor is exploring legal action after he was fired for questioning his involvement in one of the scandals.

As TVSpy has been reporting, Larry Conners was fired from KMOV in St. Louis after he wrote a lengthy Facebook post exploring whether he was targeted by the IRS after a contentious interview with President Obama. He admitted the following day that his issues with the IRS pre-dated the interview. KMOV suspended and ultimately fired him, saying his claims gave ?an appearance of bias that is inconsistent with important journalistic standards.?

This week, Conners? attorney sent a letter to the station?s general manager to inform him of possible legal action. Read it at TVSpy.
