We know that the PlayStation 4 will not require an Internet connection in order to play games. Leading up to the console?s announcement, there was a lot of speculation that the system had a rigid always-on requirement. Now we know that was never even the case during the planning phase of the upcoming gaming machine.
Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida sat down with?Game Informer for part of their massive feature on the upcoming PlayStation 4. You can read that issue right now in digital format if you land a subscription, or you can pick it up in stores soon-ish.
Part of that interview found?Game Informer asking Yoshida about whether or not an always-online requirement was in the cards for the PlayStation 4.?Gaming Everything nabbed Yoshida?s quote from the issue.
?Did we consider it? No, we didn?t consider it. The main reason being that many countries don?t have robust Internet connections. It makes sense for people to have Internet connections to play online games, but for offline games there are many countries that we saw do not really have robust Internet.?
Did you read that!? I did. I read ?something something common sense Internet something something always-online is dumb.?
Whew, close one.
Love them or hate them, we already know the Internet requirement state of two of the next gen consoles. The Wii U and the PlayStation 4 do not/will not require Internet connections in order to work. We?re waiting on that same good news for Microsoft?s follow-up to the Xbox 360. Hopefully their execs used the same line of logic found in the Sony and Nintendo offices.
