Former senator Arlen Specter, 82, dies of cancer

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Arlen Specter, a gruff, independent-minded moderate who spent three decades in the U.S. Senate but was spurned by Pennsylvania voters after switching in 2009 from Republican to Democrat, died on Sunday of cancer, his family said. He was 82.

Specter played a pivotal role in many of the major issues of his time, including the investigation into the assassination of President John Kennedy, disputes over controversial Supreme Court nominees, and the Senate vote not to remove President Bill Clinton from office for perjury after an affair.

Specter had announced in August a recurrence of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, cancer of the lymphatic system. His son Shanin Specter confirmed his death in Philadelphia.

Resilient, smart and aggressive, the former prosecutor frequently riled conservatives and liberals on his way to becoming Pennsylvania's longest-serving U.S. senator. He was elected to five six-year terms starting in 1980. He left the Republican Party because he said it had become too conservative.

"Arlen Specter was always a fighter. From his days stamping out corruption as a prosecutor in Philadelphia to his three decades of service in the Senate, Arlen was fiercely independent - never putting party or ideology ahead of the people he was chosen to serve," President Barack Obama said in a statement.

Former President George W. Bush said Specter "loved our country and served it with integrity."

Specter steered a moderate course during an era when the two major U.S. political parties became increasingly polarized, and often broke with his party. His sometimes testy demeanor and opportunistic maneuvering earned him monikers like "Snarlin' Arlen" and "Specter the Defector."

In 2009, Specter left the Republican Party after 44 years when he concluded he could not win his party's primary in Pennsylvania in 2010 against a conservative challenger. But his bid for re-election in 2010 ended in failure when he was beaten by a liberal challenger for the Democratic nomination.

After Kennedy's assassination in 1963, Specter served on the Warren Commission that investigated the shooting, and he helped devise the disputed "single-bullet" theory" that supported the idea of a lone gunman.

During his lengthy Senate career, Specter was crucial in increasing U.S. spending on biomedical research.

He helped get one conservative, Clarence Thomas, confirmed as a Supreme Court justice in 1991, while torpedoing the Supreme Court nomination of another conservative, Robert Bork, in 1987. He infuriated liberals during the Thomas confirmation hearings with prosecutorial questioning of Anita Hill, a law professor who had accused Thomas of sexual harassment. At one point, Specter accused her of "flat-out perjury."

Specter annoyed fellow Republicans by voting "not proven" on impeachment charges against Clinton in 1999, helping prevent the Democrat from being ousted from office over his affair with a White House intern.

Specter unsuccessfully sought the 1996 Republican presidential nomination.

He had several health scares, undergoing open-heart surgery and surgery for a brain tumor, as well as chemotherapy for two bouts of Hodgkin's lymphoma.

In February 2009, a month after the Democrat Obama took office, he became one of three Republican senators to vote for Obama's economic stimulus bill that Specter said was needed to avert a depression like that of the 1930s.

Specter was reviled by some conservatives for giving Obama an important early political victory. In April 2009, Specter at age 79 abandoned the Republicans - saying his party had moved too far to the right - and was welcomed by Obama and Vice President Joe Biden as a Democrat.

Incumbent senators rarely face stiff challenges for their party's nomination for re-election, but Specter barely survived conservative Pat Toomey's challenge in 2004. Pennsylvania Republican primary voters are more conservative than the state's overall electorate, and Specter calculated that he could not win the Republican primary in 2010.

'DECIDED BY THAT JURY'

"I am not prepared to have my 29-year record in the United States Senate decided by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate - not prepared to have that record decided by that jury," Specter said in April 2009 in explaining his defection.

In the 2010 Democratic primary, Specter had the support of the Democratic establishment, including Obama, Pennsylvania's governor and labor unions. But liberal challenger Joe Sestak, a retired Navy admiral and two-term congressman, painted Specter as a political contortionist concerned only about himself.

A Sestak TV ad featured a clip of Specter telling a news interviewer: "My change in party will enable me to be re-elected." Sestak thumped Specter in a May 2010 primary.

"He has been a serious and consequential senator for three decades, yet mostly ungenerous words come to mind: driven, tenacious, arrogant, self-righteous, opportunistic," Congress expert Thomas Mann of the Brookings Institution think tank told the New York Times after Specter's defeat.

Toomey, who currently represents Pennsylvania in the Senate, called Specter "a man of sharp intelligence and dogged determination."

Democrat Bob Casey, the state's other senator, said he was "a statesman and a problem solver who was able to work with Democrats and Republicans in the best interest of our commonwealth and our country."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, said Specter was "a man of moderation; he was always passionate, but always easy to work with."

Specter was born in Kansas in 1930 during the Great Depression. His father was a Russian Jewish immigrant who owned a junkyard. Specter moved to Philadelphia at age 17 to attend the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1951, then served in the Air Force before attending Yale Law School.

He was a Democrat until age 35, when the Republicans offered their nomination for district attorney of Philadelphia. He served as the city's district attorney from 1966 to 1974.

He is survived by his wife and two sons.

?SNL? skewers VP debate at top of show

"Saturday Night Live" devoted its cold-open to the vice presidential debate, skewering Joe Biden's exasperated reactions to Paul Ryan, Ryan and Mitt Romney's vague economic plan, tough moderator Martha Raddatz and the relative insignificance of the debate itself.

"Just a reminder, your performance tonight is extremely unlikely to affect the outcome of the election," Raddatz, played by newcomer Kate McKinnon, said at the top of Saturday's opening sketch.

Biden, played by Jason Sudeikis, was portrayed as a bully. When McKinnon asked the candidates to explain what "malarkey" meant, Ryan, played by Taran Killam, said, "It's Irish."

"No no no," Sudeikis' Biden said. "Irish is I come over there and smack that dumb look off your face."

"Hey, do I sound like Jim Lehrer? Do I look like I'm Jim Lehrer?" McKinnon, who played Ann Romney earlier this season, asked. "Then don't try to f--- me like I'm Jim Lehrer. Are we clear?"

[Related: 'SNL' skewers first presidential debate, Chris Matthews, Big Bird (VIDEO)]

Whose hometown has been harder-hit by unemployment was also debated. "I know what I'd say to my friend and the people of Janesville [Wis.]," Sudeikis' Biden said. "Things may be bad where you live but I guarantee you it is a paradise next to the burning coal heap that is Scranton, Pennsylvania."

"If you went to the lowest circle of hell, you'd still be 45 minutes outside of Scranton," he joked.

Later, when asked to provide specifics on his economic plan, Ryan replied: "No. But let me say it again with hand gestures."

The VP debate also provided plenty of fodder on "Weekend Update."

"Congressman Ryan prepared for Thursday's debate by studying policy and holding practice debates," Seth Meyers said. "I think Biden prepared by shot-gunning Red Bull and watching Yosemite Sam cartoons."

"During Thursday's debate Vice President Biden repeatedly criticized Paul Ryan's statements calling them a 'bunch of stuff," Meyers continued. "In fairness, 'a bunch of stuff' is the entire text of the Romney/Ryan economic plan."

More political punchlines from the "Weekend Update" transcript:

"Mitt Romney on Tuesday once again tried to distance himself from his infamous 47 percent comments, saying, 'the words that came out were not what I meant.' And if that sounds like a good excuse to you, try it on your girlfriend."

"In an interview Wednesday Mitt Romney, who had previously stated he would not introduce legislation limiting abortion, vowed that he would still be a 'pro-life president.' Which makes sense because Romney defines 'life' as anybody making over $250,000 a year."

"Children's Television Workshop on Tuesday asked the Obama campaign to stop running an ad featuring Big Bird saying that Sesame Street and its characters are nonpartisan. President Obama knew Big Bird was serious when he saw his car."

Brown rebuffs corporate welfare | CalWatchDog

Oct. 14, 2012

By Steven Greenhut

SACRAMENTO ? In much of the country, the mere mention of the name, Jerry Brown, signifies the otherworldly nature of California politics.

Many people in other states have come up to me and said something to this effect: ?You Californians are so weird that, in tough economic times, you re-elected that retread from the 1970s.?

Yet, in this season of bill signings, vetoes and elections, Gov. Brown has remained the last bulwark against the truly crazy left-wingers who run the Capitol. Brown, through his vetoes, has rejected union enrichment schemes, illegal-immigrant ?rights? measures and other nonsense. And, despite his troubling push for higher taxes with Proposition 30, the governor vetoed all six bills that were designed to resurrect, in one way or another, the redevelopment process he killed last year.

Redevelopment is a land-use and tax scheme that blends Eastern-European-style central planning with American-style crony capitalism.

Started in the 1940s to provide local governments with a ?tool? to fight urban blight, redevelopment morphed into a centralized planning system that obliterated property rights by giving City Hall expanded powers to condemn and acquire private property. Instead of fighting blight, city officials used the system to finance projects such as sales-tax-generating car dealerships, shopping malls, big-box stores and hotels by showering subsidies on influential developers.

?Blight?

City councils, via their local redevelopment bureaucracies, gained the power to declare large areas of their cities ?blighted? based on the widest-ranging set of criteria. Once designated as blighted, a redevelopment project area was formed, and all the ?tax increment? ? i.e., the growth in property tax revenue generated by improvements in that specific area ? flowed to the locality rather than the county and state. Redevelopment agencies would float debt and use the added property tax money to pay off the bonds that financed the subsidies that were provided to developers, who built projects directed from City Hall.

The cities loved it because they would gain the sales taxes and bed taxes from the new projects and could micromanage development decisions. Developers profited by manipulating City Hall. Property owners got bulldozed, and all the government intervention distorted the market, but since when has government ever cared about that?

I wrote about efforts to take church property in Orange County and give it to Costco, plans to demolish an entire neighborhood of middle-class homes so that the city could market the land to a theme-park developer, and plans to give massive subsidies to billionaire developers.

These were typical examples, not aberrations. The subsidies led to the overdevelopment of shopping centers and other commercial projects.

After the U.S. Supreme Court?s?Kelo?decision in 2005, allowing cities to use eminent domain on behalf of private developers, many states passed serious reforms that cracked down on the abuses. Not California, which eventually passed a fake reform sponsored by the League of California Cities and the California Redevelopment Association.

But a funny thing happened. The economy soured, and the fiscal promises of redevelopment turned into fiscal liabilities. The state ran low on cash. Gov. Brown realized that he could find several billion dollars by shutting down these agencies, which operate locally but are creations of the state.

Ironically, Republican legislators who claim to care about free markets fought the governor on this one, addicted as their cities had become to redevelopment cash and as addicted as they had become to campaign contributions from subsidy-seeking developers.

Democrats, who tend to love the central-planning aspects of redevelopment, went along with killing it, for the wrong reasons (more money for the state and to be loyal to their governor).

Redevelopment alive?

Victories are never permanent in government ? especially a government run by people who recognize few limits on their taxing and regulating powers. The most brazen attempt to resurrect redevelopment was Senate Bill 1156, by Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento:

?In order to more effectively address blight, the program shall be established to support development in transit priority project areas and small walkable communities and to support clean energy manufacturing through tax increment revenue.?

Basically, the Steinberg bill created redevelopment with a more limited focus and a few more safeguards. But Gov. Brown nixed this, and said in his veto statement: ?This measure would likely cause cities to focus their efforts on using new tools provided by the measure instead of winding down redevelopment.? He also pointed to the need for continued general-fund savings.

The governor remains focused on the money rather than the abuses, but a veto is a veto. The redevelopment community was livid. One pro-redevelopment writer argued that Brown?s vetoes ?add insult to injury,? but the folks insulted and injured by the governor richly deserve this outcome. Small property owners ? the victims of insult and injury at the hands of redevelopment ? should be happy.

Even when it looked like the new agencies would be resurrected, Assemblyman Chris Norby, the Fullerton Republican and longtime redevelopment foe, argued in a letter to redevelopment agency opponents that the new agencies would be a far cry from the old RDAs: ?These IFDs [Infrastructure Finance Districts] have no power to forcibly take property tax increment from counties, schools or special districts.?

In his view, there would be no ?free money? for cities. They could use tax increment, but that money would come from their own general fund ? an unlikely development.

Nevertheless, the new IFDs would have had eminent-domain powers and would have given new life to the redevelopment industry. No doubt, next year the same officials would be back again expanding the use of tax increment. It?s far better to keep the lid on redevelopment and encourage these privilege-seekers to move on to other scams.

Brown is no dummy. He wasn?t about to resurrect something he expended so much political capital in killing. Obviously, he is no believer in limited government, so our victories this year may be fleeting. But things could be worse, and the governor deserves great credit for standing his ground against the kings of corporate welfare.

Should I switch agencies??? - Adoption.com Forums

Ok so I am seriously thinking of switching agencies... We have been on the open bed list since March and our last placement has been gone for almost 2 months.. Whenever I talk to my sw she says it is just really slow.. But I have friends in the other agency and they are full and have to turn down placements!!! So idk what is going on. Should I just hang out and wait or should I switch????
Some comparisons include:

My agency and the other have the same stipend rates. The other provides transportation to visits etc. my doesnt all the time. My agency is also an adoption agency, the other is not. My agency is also a member of the California Alliance, the other is not...

So what I'm asking is: wwyd??????

PM Note: Friday Night Fights, Hillary Speaks, Bad Joe on Benghazi, Good Joe on the Base

A Viral Video Sets Martha Raddatz at the VP debate to Chamillionaire It makes more sense than you might think. Watch it: http://bit.ly/Ou42wW

Sunday - This Week has Jake Tapper interviewing Rob Portman, Mitt Romney's debate prepper, and Beau Biden, Joe's son. Plus, our special "This Week" panel, in partnership with the University of Virginia's Miller Center, gives further insights into presidential debates, tackling the question "Do Presidential Debates Change Elections?" - http://abcn.ws/X2bCA3

Friday Night Fights - Buzz Bissinger and Peter Berg have a Romney disagreement - http://abcn.ws/THTug3

Bissinger made it into Politically Foul with Amy Walter - http://yhoo.it/Q52GoD

Last Night's Other Debate Brawl-A debate last night between Democratic Reps. Howard Berman and Brad Sherman, who are running against each other for the same California seat because of redistricting, got physical. After Sherman puts his arm around Berman, a police officer intervenes. http://abcn.ws/RTrXpp (Jonathan Karl)

Hillary Speaks - The carryover from debate had lots to do with Benghazi and Joe Biden's comment that the administration didn't know about requests for increased security. Those requests were detailed Wednesday in a hearing on Capitol Hill.

Dana Hughes reports that Hillary Clinton took a rare question on the issue and used some careful wording - which included that she's "cooperating" with the investigation - to defend Amb. Susan Rice and everyone in the administration.

?

"To this day we do not have a complete picture, we do not have all the answers," she said. "No one in this administration has ever claimed otherwise. Every one of us have made clear that we are providing the best information we have at that time. And that information continues to be updated. It also continues to be put into context and more deeply understood." http://abcn.ws/SQvA09

More on Benghazi and Our Full Buffet of Debate Night Fact Checks - http://abcn.ws/RBgVDl

WH Clarifies Biden's Benghazi Embassy Security Comment-Questions on Vice President Joe Biden's comments about the Benghazi embassy attack in his debate last night, specifically that "we weren't told they wanted more security there. We did not know they wanted more security again," dominated the daily briefing by White House Press Secretary Jay Carney today. http://abcn.ws/RD0czq (Jon Garcia)

But the drumbeat on Benghazi from Republicans has intensified:

An 'Inconvenient' Terror Attack - We'll point again to Mitch McConnell's interview on the ABC News / Yahoo! News live stream last night -

"It leaves you with the suspicion that since the president was in the campaign going around reminding everybody that bin Laden was gone and we were out of Iraq and we would soon be out of Afghanistan and implying that the war on terror was over that the campaign just felt it was inconvenient that we had a terrorist attack," McConnell said.

Romney Says Biden Doubled Down on Denial Regarding Libya Attacks-Mitt Romney today said Vice President Joe Biden is "doubling down on denial" when he said during the debate last night that the administration was not told the U.S. consulate in Libya wanted more security ahead of the deadly attacks there last month. http://abcn.ws/WcwTaN (Emily Friedman)

Flip Side - Benghazi was the bad news for Joe Biden. There's good news too, according to Greg Krieg: Joe Biden drove a shot of adrenaline into the heart of the Democratic Party last night with the kind of persistent and colorful attack on the Romney ticket that President Obama had struggled to make just a week before. The jury's still out on how Biden's performance played with swing voters, but for the segments of the base discouraged by Romney's emphatic showing at the Denver debate, Thursday night provided relief and renewed optimism. The full day after wrap - http://abcn.ws/SViYAE

Debate Hangover - Republicans continued to paint Joe Biden as something of a nutty uncle. Democrats continued to paint Paul Ryan as spewer of questionable facts.

Don't believe either side. There was no clear winner at Thursday's Vice Presidential debate. But there were plenty of memes, if you can still stand that word.

Amy Walter and Dan Kloeffler broke it down on the post-debate stream - http://abcn.ws/SV2pVf

Next up? Townhall Tuesday. It's a new format that could test Mitt Romney's dominance of Barack Obama a week ago.

Ryan Skips the Stimulus at Breakfast-Paul Ryan said today that he "felt great" about his debate with Vice President Biden, but declined to discuss Biden's taunting reference to Ryan's request for stimulus funds after criticizing the Obama administration program. http://abcn.ws/QhULX7 (Shushannah Walshe)

Romney, McDonnell Praise Ryan's Debate Performance During Virginia Rally-Mitt Romney and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell praised Paul Ryan's debate performance last night, telling a crowd here that there was only one person on stage who was "thoughtful, and respectful, stead, and poised." http://abcn.ws/R471uG(Emily Friedman)

VP Debate Winner: It May Not Matter-Who won the Thursday's vice presidential debate? That's question is being debated by politicos, but the answer may take some time to emerge. (Elizabeth Hartfield)

'12 Voting Well Under Way; Who's 'Winning' Not Clear-The general election may technically still be a little more than three weeks away, but voting is going on now. http://abcn.ws/TciCq6 (Elizabeth Hartfield)

VP Debate: Biden, Ryan at each other in a moment

DANVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? At odds in an instant, Republican Paul Ryan cited the death of the U.S. ambassador in Libya as evidence Thursday night that the administration's foreign policy is unraveling. Vice President Joe Biden shot back in campaign debate, "That is a bunch of malarkey."

"Not a single thing he said is accurate," Democrat Biden declared in the opening moments of the only debate between the two vice presidential candidates in a national campaign with a little less than four weeks left to run.

Both men seemed primed for a showdown in their opening moments on stage.

Ryan said the administration had accorded insufficient security to Ambassador Chris Stevens, who was killed in a terrorist attack at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11

Biden said the budget that Ryan authored as chairman of the House Budget Committee had cut the Obama administration's funding request for diplomatic security by $300 million.

The two men also tangled over the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, administration steps to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon and relations with Israel, an area where Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney frequently accuses President Barack Obama of letting down the United States' closest ally in the Middle East.

Biden, 69, repeatedly accused Ryan of misstating the facts ? "this is a bunch of stuff," he erupted at one point.

But the 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman stood his ground. Iran is "four years closer" to having a nuclear weapon as Obama's term nears its end, he said.

The debate took place a little more than a week after Obama and Romney met in the first of their three debates ? an encounter that has fueled a Republican comeback in the polls.

With Democrats eager for Biden to show the spark the president lacked, he did so early and often.

Unprompted, he brought up the videotape where Romney had said 47 percent of Americans pay no federal income tax and view themselves as victims who do not take responsibility for their own lives.

"It's about time they take responsibility" instead of signing pledges to avoid raising taxes, Biden said of Romney, Ryan and the Republicans.

But Ryan quickly recited the dreary economic statistics ? 23 million are struggling to work, he said, and 15 percent of the country is living in poverty. "This is not what a real recovery looks like."

Romney has gained ground in national and battleground-state surveys in the week since he shared a stage with the president, and even Obama has conceded he performed poorly.

Asked directly when they could reduce unemployment to 6 percent from the current 7.8 percent, neither man answered directly.

Instead, Biden repeated the president's contention that the nation is moving in the right direction, while Ryan repeated the Republican view that economic struggle persists even though Democrats had control of both houses of Congress during the first two years of Obama's term.

"Where are the 5 million green jobs" we were told would be created? Ryan said to Biden.

Republicans and Democrats alike have said in recent days the race now approximates the competitive situation in place before the two political conventions. The two men are generally separated by a point or two in national public opinion polls and in several battleground states, with Obama holding a slender lead in Ohio and Wisconsin.

Both men campaigned during the day as their political partners prepped for their moment on the debate stage.

Mocking recent changes in Romney's rhetoric, Obama told a Miami rally on Thursday, "After running for more than a year in which he called himself severely conservative, Mitt Romney is trying to convince you that he was severely kidding."

Romney visited with 93-year-old Billy Graham in North Carolina before speaking to an evening rally in Asheville, N.C. "Prayer is the most helpful thing you can do for me," he told the evangelist.

For Biden, Thursday night's debate was his first since the 2008 campaign, when he shared a stage with Sarah Palin, then John McCain's running mate.

Ryan spars frequently with Democrats during debates on legislation on the House floor and in the House Budget Committee, which he chairs, but not in a one-on-one encounter covering 90 minutes and a virtually unlimited range of topics.

For all their differences, the two men shared a common objective, to advance the cause of their tickets in a close race for the presidency ? and avoid a gaffe that might forever seal their place in the history of debates.

Romney's choice of Ryan as running mate over the summer cheered conservatives in the House, many of whom regard him as their leader on budget and economic issues. The seven-term lawmaker has authored a pair of deficit-reducing budgets in the past two years that call for spending cuts and changes in Medicare, blueprints that Republicans passed through the House and Obama and his allies in Congress frequently criticize. He also champions a no-tax increase approach to economic policy.

As a senator before becoming vice president, Biden was chairman of the Foreign Relations and Judiciary committees, and he has long experience in national security issues. More recently, he was Obama's point man in arduous, ultimately unsuccessful negotiations with Republicans on steps to cut the deficit.

Both Ryan and Biden held extensive rehearsals, with stand-ins for their opponents.

Biden turned to Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., who is well-versed in Ryan's policy views from his tenure as senior Democrat on the Budget Committee.

Ryan's foil in rehearsal was former Solicitor General Ted Olson, a skillful courtroom advocate.

Martha Raddatz of ABC News had moderator duties.

After they meet next week in Hempstead, N.Y., Obama and Romney will have one more debate, Oct. 22 in Boca Raton, Fla.

The Oak Leaf : Hotel Transylvania: A Halloween Monster Comedy ...

Hotel Transylvania is a lighthearted Halloween flick.

Cassidy Mila, A&E Editor
October 11, 2012

It?s October and the season of ghouls, ghosts and goblins is upon us. For now the list of movies that fit the bill is short, but that doesn?t mean they aren?t out there. The animated picture ?Hotel Transylvania? offers all the cute creepiness needed to keep the kids? attention, and plenty of under-the-breath adult humor and innuendos.

The story of a young girl whose over-protective father, Dracula (Adam Sandler), keeps her isolated in his hotel for monsters because after the passing of his late wife he believes all humans hate monsters and would like to see them dead at the end of a pitchfork. His sense of security is destroyed when his hotel?s first human guest walks through the door.

The movie is perfect for kids. It?s cute and full of lighthearted jokes, potty humor and the creepiness that?s expected from a Halloween movie. The mindless zombies that compile the staff of the hotel are a main source of ridiculous physical humor, and the shrunken heads that hang off every room door as a substitute for ?Do Not Disturb? signs are a main source of sarcastic, chop-busting dialogue.

Teens dragged along with the family will most likely find themselves trying not to smile, and enjoy the scenes in which the love interest of Dracula?s daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) and the human, Jonathan (Andy Samberg) is in full effect. There is a rave scene when the hotel celebrates Mavis? birthday, and their teenage feelings as well as the perfect portrayal of rave goers made me chuckle more than once. The scene culminates with a rap performed by Samberg?s character that is unmistakably his music group ?The Lonely Island? making an appearance.

Most of the comedy that I identified with came from Dracula and his friends. In true Sandler fashion, he had all of his buddies from other movies play his character?s friends.

Kevin James plays Frankenstein, Steve Buscemi is the Werewolf, David Spade plays the Invisible Man, Jon Lovitz plays the cook Quasimodo and Ceelo Green is the Mummy. Together the ensemble is the main source for adult humor and ridiculousness.

As for the overall quality of the film, I haven?t seen a family movie that I enjoyed this much in a long time. The surreal creepiness and the off-the-wall humor made it feel like ?A Nightmare Before Christmas? meets ?Big Daddy.? The only knock on it is that the opening is a little weak. They set the plot and setting in less than five minutes, which felt a bit rushed. But soon I forgot my criticisms and started to really enjoy the movie. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone looking for a laugh or to get into the Halloween spirit.

CHICAS PRODUCTIONS: More than 50,000 musicians have money ...

More than 50,000 musicians have money waiting unclaimed...

By Alex Pham

This post was not written by a Nigerian prince.

SoundExchange, a nonprofit group that collects digital music royalties on behalf of artists, on Wednesday said that around 50,000 musicians have unclaimed money with the group totaling more than $31 million. The amounts range from $10 to $100,000 per artist or label, the group said.

Those who want to see if a check is waiting for them should visit SoundExchange and check the database.

Among the names listed are Mark Wahlberg's hip-hop band Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, The Smith Westerns and Joaquin Phoenix. It's not just musicians who have money waiting for them. Sinbad, whose spoken word albums have been part of an increasingly popular comedy genre for Internet radio shows, is also on the list.

Created in 2000, SoundExchange collects performance royalties from digital radio companies offered by services such as Pandora, Clear Channel Communications' iHeartRadio and SiriusXM's satellite radio. Traditional AM and FM radio broadcasters are currently exempt from having to pay performance royalties, though artists and digital music companies are lobbying hard to change that.

The sums collected from online, cable and satellite radio are nothing to sneeze at. More than $1 billion has been paid out to artists and record labels over the years, the group announced in June.

The amount keeps going up as the number of Internet radio listeners continues to grow and as SoundExchange succeeds in recruiting more artists to come pick up their royalty checks. In the first quarter of this year, it paid out $108.6 million, the first time SoundExchange exceeded $100 million in payments in a three-month period.

A diamond bigger than Earth?

LONDON (Reuters) - Forget the diamond as big as the Ritz. This one's bigger than planet Earth.

Orbiting a star that is visible to the naked eye, astronomers have discovered a planet twice the size of our own made largely out of diamond.

The rocky planet, called '55 Cancri e', orbits a sun-like star in the constellation of Cancer and is moving so fast that a year there lasts a mere 18 hours.

Discovered by a U.S.-Franco research team, its radius is twice that of Earth's but it is much more dense with a mass eight times greater. It is also incredibly hot, with temperatures on its surface reaching 3,900 degrees Fahrenheit (1,648 Celsius).

"The surface of this planet is likely covered in graphite and diamond rather than water and granite," said Nikku Madhusudhan, the Yale researcher whose findings are due to be published in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The study - with Olivier Mousis at the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planetologie in Toulouse, France - estimates that at least a third of the planet's mass, the equivalent of about three Earth masses, could be diamond.

Diamond planets have been spotted before but this is the first time one has been seen orbiting a sun-like star and studied in such detail.

"This is our first glimpse of a rocky world with a fundamentally different chemistry from Earth," Madhusudhan said, adding that the discovery of the carbon-rich planet meant distant rocky planets could no longer be assumed to have chemical constituents, interiors, atmospheres, or biologies similar to Earth.

David Spergel, an astronomer at Princeton University, said it was relatively simple to work out the basic structure and history of a star once you know its mass and age.

"Planets are much more complex. This 'diamond-rich super-Earth' is likely just one example of the rich sets of discoveries that await us as we begin to explore planets around nearby stars."

"Nearby" is a relative concept in astronomy. Any fortune-hunter not dissuaded by "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz", F.Scott Fitzgerald's jazz age morality tale of thwarted greed, will find Cancri e about 40 light years, or 230 trillion miles, from Park Avenue.

Mars rover studies rock that's a true curiosity

A rock on Mars being studied by NASA's Curiosity rover is unlike any Martian stone ever seen, and is surprisingly similar to an unusual, but well-known, kind of rock on Earth.

This type of rock is the first of its kind encountered on Mars and is helping broaden scientists' understanding of how igneous rocks form, scientists said Thursday. The rock, named "Jake Matijevic" in honor of a Curiosity mission team member who died in August, is a 16-inch-tall (40-centimeter-tall) pyramid-shape specimen that Curiosity encountered at its landing spot in Mars' Gale Crater.

Curiosity, the centerpiece of the $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory Mission, touched down on the Red Planet Aug. 5 to learn whether Mars ever had the conditions necessary to support life.

The Jake rock is being used as a calibration target for Curiosity to try out its suite of 10 science instruments on. "It was the first good-sized rock that we found along the way," Roger Wiens, principal investigator for Curiosity's ChemCam instrument at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, said Thursday during a press conference. Not like other rocks
In late September Curiosity used ChemCam and its Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) to probe Jake's chemical composition. What they found was surprising.

"The spectrum that we're seeing was not what I expected," said APXS principal investigator Ralf Gellert of Canada's University of Guelph. "It seems to be a new type of rock that we've discovered on Mars" that wasn't seen by NASA's previous Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity.

Jake appears to have higher concentrations of elements such as sodium, aluminum and potassium, and lower concentrations of magnesium, iron and nickel, than other igneous rocks studied on Mars.

While previously unknown on Mars, this type of chemical composition is seen in a rare but well-studied class of rocks on Earth. On Earth, such specimens are found on oceanic islands such as Hawaii and in other places. They are thought to form when interior rocks melt to form magma, which then rises toward the surface. As it rises, it cools, and parts of the material crystalize, preferentially selecting some elements while leaving a remainder of liquid magma that is enriched with the left-behind chemicals.

However, the researchers said it's too soon to know whether the Jake rock formed this same way.

"This is based on one rock and one has to be careful not to extrapolate," said Edward Stolper, provost of Caltech and co-investigator on Curiosity's science team. "You have to wait and see if we find others and if relationships among them give us clues into the processes."

Ultimately, this rock is deepening scientists' understanding of the types of geology present on Mars, and could reveal new formation processes for known types of rocks.

"There is a richness in the igneous story that's not surprising," Stolper told Space.com. "The more you look, the more you find different things happened."

Mysterious shiny object
Curiosity is about 65 days into its mission, and still testing out all of its equipment.

The rover used its scoop tool to dig up Martian dirt for the first time earlier this week, and scientists saw a strange shiny object in photos of the scooped material. The find put a temporary halt on scooping activities while mission managers investigated the object.

Scientists have since concluded that it is most likely a bit of plastic from the rover itself or its descent stage that came loose and eventually fell onto the ground.

"The main thing here is, we scoured the rover and it's completely inconsequential to the rover's function," said Chris Roumeliotis, lead turret rover planner for Curiosity at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, Calif., where Curiosity's mission control is based. "It's likely from EDL [entry, descent and landing], and there is absolutely no issue."

Mission team members will continue investigating the debris, but they think it might be a piece of resistive heating material from the rover's exterior that was attached with adhesive, which might have come unstuck.
