Modern Architecture In Hong Kong Adding Glamour To The City

Architecture in Hong Kong boasts a great deal of style similar to contemporary architecture like postmodernism, modernism and functionalism. Due to the unavailability of adequate land some of the olden buildings of Hong Kong still remain in the urban regions. Hong Kong is renowned among the world to be having some of the most modern architecture that is revealed from the many skyscrapers that dominate the city apart from the few old fashioned structures. Most of the buildings in the cities are more than 35 meters high and is said to be the best skyline in the world when the towering skyscrapers blend with the exquisite Victoria Harbor and the mountain setting. Before the British settled in Hong Kong in 1841 the cities of Hong Kong were a pure blend of Chinese architecture.

The greater part of the populace was fishers who faced much difficulty due to typhoons and pirates. To defend themselves they built Tin Hau Temples to offer their patron goddess. Even the farmers built fortified townships to protect themselves from danger. Unknowingly these structures added much glamour to the landscape of the cities. With the British settling in, the styles used in architecture took a new turn which included three or four storied buildings that were tightly crammed in town blocks that took a unique mix of both European and Chinese styles. Usually the ground floors of these up stair structures were shops with apartments accommodating the upper floors. This style of design which was known as Tong Lau did not include elevators and continued till around the World War II and still have a few surviving in abandoned states.

In the mid 19th century the settled British established the Victorian and Edwardian Styles. The Murray House, Central Police Station and Legislative Council Building are remarkable existing examples. People traveling Hong Kong, who wishes to stay in luxury 5 star hotels, can enjoy a stay in Langham Hotels which is one of the best luxury hotels collection in Hong Kong. While you are on vacation you will experience the spectacular skyline made even more charming with the modern architecture boasting through the skyscrapers.
