China Mobile launches Jego VoIP messenger service on smartphones

China Mobile, the largest mobile telecom carrier in China, has launched smartphone apps for its Jego in-house-developed VoIP and instant messenger service, according to a Chinese-language Guang Ming Wang report

Jego is operated by China Mobile's subsidiary China Mobile International.

Overseas Chinese are target users of Jego, the report indicated. Jego users have to register Jego bundled with a China Mobile phone number which is used to make or receive VoIP calls to fixed-line or mobile phone numbers in China or Hong Kong. VoIP communications between Jego users are free.

China Mobile subscribers can use Jego for free to send text messages, graphics or photos.
