Police: Women pray peacefully at Jerusalem site

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli police say prayers by a Jewish women's group at a key Jerusalem holy site have ended without incident, in contrast to last month's scuffles with ultra-Orthodox protesters.

Last month's prayers by the Women of the Wall at the Western Wall were marred by violence as thousands of protesters tried to stop the women from praying with prayer shawls and other religious garb that ultra-Orthodox tradition holds are strictly for men.

The protesters were angry that the women wore the garb at the wall, a remnant of the biblical Jewish Temples and the holiest place where Jews can pray.

Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said police escorted the Women of the Wall to and from the site on Sunday. He said some ultra-Orthodox men hurled insults, but police made no arrests.
